The White House kicked off Black History Month with a celebration of black excellence in dance. This year, the White House designated the theme of Black History Month as “Honoring the Past While Celebrating the Present; 7 Years of Living African American History.” In a statement released by the White House, the daylong workshops included a panel discussion with first lady Michelle Obama, the icons, and actress Lala Anthony. The day concluded with four dance demonstrations–African, modern, ballet and hip-hop–by the young ladies including opening remarks from first lady Michelle Obama.

As part of this celebration, Michelle Obama will highlight the contributions African American women have made to dance by hosting a day-long dance workshop for local students.
