The Resurgence of The Black Press
Along with the newspaper industry as a whole, the traditional Black press that served as harbingers of Black progress from before Reconstruction to the post-Civil Rights Era, has for many been missing and presumed dead. However, in the wake of COVID and the demands for change following George Floyd’s murder, the Black press has emerged with renewed relevance and a fresh commitment to partnership and innovation. Second-generation Black press owner Lawrence “Larry” Lee of the Observer Media Group joins Beyond The Hype to provide an inside look at the resurgence of traditional Black newspaper brands and why it matters for Black communities.
