Reclaiming The Culture: The Art of Tap

Tap dancing is often misrepresented and undervalued in popular culture, at best viewed as a lower art form when compared to ballet, modern and even hip-hop; and at worst associated with racist Black stereotypes of low-class coonery. Tap dancer, instructor, choreographer, and advocate Bril Barrett, founder of Chicago’s M.A.D.D. Rhythms, joins Beyond The Hype to share the importance of reclaiming the narrative of tap dancing as a uniquely American art form created by Black Americans, producing new generations of performers on stages across the nation and around the world.
