Trump Lawyers Flop on Day One of His Impeachment Trial

The majority of Republican Senators voted Tuesday that Trump’s impeachment trial is unconstitutional, but many of them were unimpressed by the defense Trump’s lawyers put up.

Republican Senators are still trying to push the argument that Trump’s trial is unconstitutional, but after the first day, most of them had no explanation for the defense Trump’s lawyers gave.

“President Trump’s team was disorganized. They did everything they could but to talk about the question at hand. And when they talked about it, they kind of glided over it, almost as if they were embarrassed of their arguments,” GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy told reporters Tuesday.

Many of the complaints centered on Trump’s lawyer Bruce Castor, who went on a rambling, impassioned speech that went absolutely nowhere. Castor’s defense was so bad, Newsmax cut him off to ask guest Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard Law professor, his thoughts and Dershowitz did not hold back.

“There is no argument. I have no idea what he’s doing. I have no idea why he’s saying what he’s saying!” Dershowitz said. “After all kinds of very strong presentations on the part of the House managers, you get up there and respond like this?”

Dershowitz wasn’t the only one confused by Castor’s soliloquy.
“In fairness, I was really stunned at the first attorney who presented for former President Trump. I couldn’t figure out where he was going,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski, another Republican who voted that the trial was constitutional, told reporters.
The Associated Press reported even the former president was furious at Castor’s defense complaining that his team came off looking bad on TV. According to the AP, Trump was impressed with the argument Democrats laid out Tuesday, which included a 13-minute video of the Jan. 6 attack.
Multiple GOP senators, including Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro, all blasted Castor’s performance. Many of those same senators praised the performance of David Schoen, who was the second Trump lawyer to speak.
Schoen argued the trial was a ploy by Democrats to keep Trump from running for office again. He also argued the trial was rushed and didn’t allow for due process.
