The streets of St. Louis are running rampant with strong emotions, as the weight of a recent shooting at the hands of a police officer takes hold of the city. Eighteen-year-old Michael Brown, a black teen and recent high school graduate, was fatally shot near his grandmother’s home. The still-developing story has racial tinges reminiscent of Trayvon Martin’s 2012 death and Renisha McBride’s 2013 attack. The victim’s grandmother found his body in the street after it laid lifeless for more than an hour.
According to the Associated Press, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Police Department confirmed that a Ferguson police officer shot the man, but with no further details on why the shooting occurred, it has left the black community searching for answers. In the midst of the shooting, the death of this young man has sparked grief, rioting, looting, anger, and confrontation between revolutionaries on-and-offline.
