Stephen and Ayesha Curry Helping to Feed Oakland Students During Coronavirus School Closings
The generosity of professional athletes is shining brightly with the effects of this coronavirus. The latest athlete to put his money where his mouth is is Golden State Warriors’ player Stephen Curry, according to CNN.
Steph, along with his entrepreneurial wife, Ayesha Curry, has pledged to help feed children in the Oakland area who have their lives and education impacted because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Many students would possibly miss meals due to not being in school during the day. The Currys revealed that they are donating funds to the Alameda County Community Food Bank to help serve the displaced students, through their foundation, Eat.Learn.Play.
To try to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the NBA has suspended the 2019-20 season until further notice.
Oakland is closing schools bc of COVID-19. We support this decision but are concerned a/b the 18,000+ kids that rely on school for 2+ meals daily. @eatlearnplay is donating to @ACCFB to ensure every child has access to the food they need. “We just found out that the Oakland Unified School District is closing its doors for the foreseeable future,” Steph says in a video posted to his social media accounts. “We want to intercede on behalf of the kids who rely on their daily services and try to help any way we can.”
“The statistics are really staggering,” Ayesha added. “18,000 kids rely on at least two meals a day from the school system, so we want to make sure that we rally around everyone and make sure these kids are not wondering where their next meal is coming from, and the parents, some are still having to go to work and worrying about the kids’ logistics … we’re just making sure there’s one less thing to worry about.”
Eat. Learn. Play is working with the Alameda County Community Food Bank and the Oakland Unified School District to ensure every child who relies on their school system for food will be getting breakfast and lunch.
