Here are five types of mentors everyone needs to succeed.

Mentor 1: The Challenger

Taking constructive criticism is hard, but it’s

necessary for career advancement. The Challenger is a straight shooter–the one who doesn’t tell you what you want to hear, but tells you what you need to hear. They’re visionaries who embrace disruption, so they’ll challenge you to step outside of your comfort zone and take a risk. And, they won’t tolerate too many excuses.

Mentor 2: The Industry Insider

When it comes to your chosen field, the Insider knows about the good, the bad, and the ugly. They can help you strategize on ways to navigate the culture, and position you for success.

Mentor 3: The Sponsor

Sponsors go beyond doling out advice; they make things happen–especially in the workplace. Whether it’s helping you land a new job or mentioning your name as the one to watch for a promotion, they advocate for you, even when you’re not in the room.

Mentor 4: The Super Connector

Whether you’re looking for a good mechanic or an influencer in your industry, the Super Connector can connect you with almost anyone. Because they thrive off of connecting people, it doesn’t matter if they’re attending a networking event or standing in line at the supermarket, Super Connectors meet people anywhere they go and go beyond exchanging business cards to establishing extraordinary relationships.

Mentor 5: The Cheerleader

This person may not have a clue about your day-to-day work responsibilities, but when it comes to uplifting your spirit and celebrating your accomplishments, they are cheering you on from the sidelines. Regardless of your role, they remind you of your inner power to succeed in life. And during a time when social media is heavily relied upon to elevate your career, this person makes it a point to share most– if not all– of your accomplishments with their network.
