Samsung unveiled its latest Galaxy smartphones, the S8 and the S8+, at an event in New York City on Wednesday. The phones are highly anticipated in wake of Samsung’s debacle with exploding Galaxy Note 7 phones. Could the S8 be the phone that burnishes Samsung’s reputation for quality?
Here are the announced features of the S8:
The Galaxy S8 offers a 5.8-inch display and the S8+ is the 6.2-inch model.
Both phones are built with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back.
The Infinity Display feature is designed to offers a continuous display and limits the amount of scrolling needed.
The S8 is a nearly bezel-less, curved design without any harsh edges; Samsung executives refer to it as a “new form factor.â€
Both models feature an advanced 8MP F1.7 smart autofocus front camera and 12MP F1.7 Dual Pixel rear camera. The camera allows customers to take multiple images of a subject and the enhanced image processing combines all the best aspects of each image into one final, optimized image.
The S8 and S8+ feature the industry’s first 10-nanometer chip, which is supposed to enhance performance and efficiency. The chip is built with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processors.
Both phones are the first to be certified by the UHD Alliance as “Mobile HDR Premium.” This means that the phones reportedly offer rich colors and a more immersive viewing experience.
The new Galaxy phones come with advanced security including face recognition and eye scanning–you can take an “eyeprint†for security in addition to fingerprint scanning.
Both phones are IP68 water and dust-proof.
The MicroSD card supports up to 256GB.
The phones support fast as well as wireless charging.
The S8 phones ship with a new intelligent assistant called Bixby. Bixby can manage services and apps via voice, touch, and text command. Built with artificial intelligence, it can learn your habits the more you use your phone and offer customized assistance. Bixby also has image recognition capabilities. You can point your phone at an object and receive more information about it with Bixby’s image recognition.
The S8 and the S8+ will be in stores on April 21.
