Former NFL player Peyton Manning is giving back to historically Black colleges and universities. Manning joined Golden State Warriors player Stephen Curry, professional golfer Phil Mickelson, and former NBA player Charles Barkley for The Match: Champions for Change with Capital One held on Nov. 27. He represented three
HBCUs to help raise funds for COVID-19 relief, including Grambling State, Southern University, and Lane College.“I’m proud
to represent these schools. Obviously growing up in New Orleans, the entire state of Louisiana has been important to me, and growing up in Tennessee and having a real connection there, that’s kind of how we found these HBCUs,” Manning said at a virtual conference according to Golf Week.“I’ve never played golf with Steph Curry, but I’ve certainly seen him play basketball a lot. One of the great competitors, one of the great clutch performers… I’m looking forward to hopefully as my partner — that clutch performer carrying over to the golf course.”
According to the PGA Tour, the event was able to raise over $5 million to support HBCUs with over 3.5 million meals donated on its behalf to Feeding America.
Mickelson shared photos from the event on his Twitter
page. “What a day!” he wrote in a tweet. “Not only did Charles and I shock the world, but more importantly, we raised a ton of money for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.”
Barkley and Mickelson emerged as the victors of the event.
