hAlaska’s largest newspaper yesterday endorsed Barack Obama for president, saying that Gov. Sarah Palin is just not ready to lead the U.S. should 72-year-old Sen. John McCain be unable to fill out his term.
In an editorial, the Anchorage Daily News wrote: “Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand. The same cannot be said of Sen. McCain.”
The paper focussed on the main issue gripping the country in writing its endorsement, addressing McCain and Obama’s response to the economic crisis. The Daily News said since the crisis emerged McCain has “stumbled and fumbled badly.”
“On the most important issue of the day, Sen. Obama is a clear choice.

“Sen. McCain describes himself as a maverick, by which he seems to mean that he spent 25 years trying unsuccessfully to persuade his own party to follow his bipartisan, centrist lead. Sadly, maverick John McCain didn’t show up for the campaign. Instead we have candidate McCain, who embraces the extreme Republican orthodoxy he once resisted and cynically asks Americans to buy for another four years.”
The Daily News takes pains to state that the election “is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation. However, what does it say about your ability and qualifications to lead when the paper that has been covering your political career from day one refuses to endorse your candidacy?
