Florida Presses Supreme Court To Block District Court Ruling In Anti-Drag Show Enforcement

Florida officials have placed an emergency request to the Supreme Court to allow them to enforce its law banning drag shows, The Hill reports.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the legislation into law in May 2023, a few days before the Orlando restaurant and bar that hosts drag shows, Hamburger Mary’s, sued the state. A federal judge found the law unconstitutional in late June 2023, banning the state from enforcing the law against anyone. Now, the state’s Republican attorney general is calling for the high court to minimize the scope in order for the law to be enforced.

“Hamburger Mary’s has not alleged, much less proven, that application of the Protection of Children Act to others in the State of Florida will cause actual or imminent injury to Hamburger Mary’s itself,” the state said in court filings.  “It was a serious error for the district court nonetheless to enjoin the statute as it may apply to the rest of the world.”

Hamburger Mary’s and drag show advocates are in for a fight as the request will fall on the desk of conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, who is in charge of emergency requests from the federal appeals court covering Florida. He could act on the request alone or refer it to the full court for consideration.

The state’s drag show ban labels it a misdemeanor to knowingly take a child to an “adult live performance,” partially defined as performances depicting “lewd conduct” or “lewd exposure of prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts.” Though the legislation didn’t specifically mention drag shows, according to the Associated Press, the sponsor of the law said it was aimed at those performances. Venues that violated the law were set to face stiff fines and risk the possibility of losing their liquor licenses.

An appointee of former President Bill Clinton, U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell, looked at the terms as “ambiguous” and found it could make the legislation “unconstitutionally vague and overbroad” in violation of the First Amendment.

Along with a 2-1 panel on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Presnell denied Florida’s request. “Florida strongly disagrees with that conclusion and has appealed the injunction,” the state wrote to the justices.

“Instead, Florida now applies for a partial stay of the injunction to the extent it sweeps beyond the plaintiff and enjoins the statute universally.”

GOP Lawmakers Urge D.C. Mayor To Rename Black Lives Matter Plaza

Republican politicians have written a letter to Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser requesting that “Black Lives Matter” Plaza be renamed after Black Lives Matter chapters made statements of support for Palestine.

The Oct. 23 letter suggested that the local chapters of the movement were supporting Hamas in its deadly attack on Israel that occurred Oct. 7. The letter was signed by lawmakers such as Senators Marco Rubio (FL) and Lindsey Graham (SC) as well as Congressmen Josh Hawley (MO) and John Rose (TN).

“We write to urge you to immediately rename ‘Black Lives Matter Plaza’ and remove the street painting that reads ‘Black Lives Matter’ due to that movement’s celebration of violent antisemitic terrorism,” the letter said.

The plaza that leads to the White House in Washington, D.C. was renamed in bright yellow lettering after the movement to eradicate police brutality and was officiated in 2020 after protests on behalf of the police murder of George Floyd.

Local BLM groups, though many are not directly affiliated with the national network, have publicly relayed their support for Palestine. The letter explicitly named Chicago and DC as well as Grassroots groups in their message. BLM Chicago has retracted a post that suggested violence, but reaffirmed that they are pro-Palestine.

The letter proclaimed that the posts displaying their stance for Palestinian resistance is an effort to “delegitimize Israel and rationalize brutal attacks.”

The call to action from  conservative senators and Congress members ended with the reemphasized point that BLM means to “openly celebrate” what they deem is antisemitic violence against Israel.

“America must clearly affirm its stance against antisemitism, where it appears. We therefore urge you to immediately rename the Black Lives Matter Plaza, to remove the associated street painting in the plaza, and to end the city’s celebration of this terrorist sympathizer group.”

Mayor Bowser has yet to respond to the letter as of press time. The Plaza remains untouched.

Tracy Morgan Pays Tribute To Business Manager In Emotional Awards Ceremony: ‘I Don’t Know Where I’d Be Without You’

Comedian Tracy Morgan candidly shared that his manager has been his backbone during his multi-decades-long career. On Oct. 25, he told attendees of The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Power Business Managers breakfast about his longtime relationship with manager Mark Landesman.

The pair have worked together for two decades, and Morgan was on hand to pay tribute to Landesman as he took home the Business Manager Icon Award.

“I don’t know where I’d be without you, bro,” he said. “Whenever I want to buy a new Ferrari, Mark is always here to say, ‘No, Tracy.’ If it wasn’t for Mark, I would’ve had 26 Ferraris and a terrible tax problem.”

Morgan, who suffered extensive injuries from a car crash in 2014, also relayed the closeness of the pair’s bond, revealing that Landesman was the first person at the hospital following his accident.

“I love you, I’ll always love you,” he said. “You mean a lot to me. You were there for me.

“He’s more than just a business manager. He’s more than just a friend. Mark is like a member of my family,” Morgan continued. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all that you’ve done and all you’ve done for me.”

Landesman, who took time to explain to attendees that his position was about more than just money for his clients, also relived the harrowing account of the aftermath of Morgan’s accident and subsequent recovery.

“My immediate reaction was to get to the hospital as soon as possible because I knew Tracy just completed his estate plan, and I was named his power of attorney and health care proxy,” he said. “After walking into the emergency room, I was escorted into the conference room, briefed on the situation and was introduced to numerous doctors. I then realized Tracy’s family were heavily relying on me for guidance and to help interpret the situation. Very tough decisions had to be made; Tracy’s recovery was long and difficult. I visited him throughout the hospital and then at the rehab facility, which went over several months. I tried to keep the spirits positive, and there was so many unknowns ahead of him: What kind of recovery would Tracy have, and would he ever be able to work again?”

In Morgan’s 2014 accident, caused by the negligence of a Walmart truck driver, he sustained a broken leg, a broken femur, a broken nose, several broken ribs, as well as head injuries. He also spent several weeks in a coma and was wheelchair-bound for months. The funnyman joked about the ordeal in his 2023 comedy special, Takin’ It Too Far, saying, “Walmart took care of me. Walmart gave me a grip. They gave me so much money I could roll my eyes at White people.”

Atlanta’s Black-Owned Busy Bee Cafe Receives Michelin Honor

Atlanta foodies are celebrating the release of the city’s first Michelin Guide. Of the guide’s honorees, a Black-owned soul food spot, The Busy Bee Cafe, is making a name for itself as an establishment of good eats, winning the 2023 Bib Gourmand Award.

Known as “the South on a plate,” Busy Bee has been serving Southern classics since 1947 and is already famous in Atlanta’s Vine City neighborhood. It makes its first appearance on the Michelin Guide’s radar for being a quintessential soul food experience. Known for its quaint yet cozy atmosphere, the hospitality matches expectations placed on fine Southern cuisine.

“We are Black history,” shared the restaurant on its website. “Prepared with love. Seasoned with soul.”

In its review of its experience, the Michelin Guide also notes one of its esteemed former customers whose street the restaurant resides.

“Everyone has come through these doors, including Martin Luther King Jr. It may be big on heart, but this spot, with tile floors, booths, a stool-lined counter and walls hung with framed photos, is tiny,” detailed the publication. “Still, they’re making a big impression with old-fashioned Southern/soul food.”

The restaurant’s award-winning fried chicken continues to delight local and traveling customers. From sweet tea and lemonade to the homemade peach cobbler, its time-honored menu items are receiving praise. On Oct. 20, current owner Tracey Gates was announced as an inductee into The Georgia Hospitality Hall of Fame. She will receive the honor on Nov. 1.

Busy Bee continues serving comfort meals with an exquisite twist and is a pioneer for Black-owned restaurants to be recognized for culinary excellence. Read the complete review from the Michelin Guide on this Atlanta favorite.

Missy Elliott Donates $50K To Help Families Facing Eviction In Virginia

Missy Elliott is giving back to her hometown.

The Grammy award-winning rapper returned to her native in Portsmouth, Virginia for “Missy Elliott Day” where she announced a $50,000 donation to Portsmouth Redevelopment Housing Authority. Thanks to the donation, 26 families facing possible eviction met the criteria and will receive assistance, WTKR reports.

“I feel like as artists we are celebrated a lot. So instead of it being about me I wanted it to be about the people here, my hometown,” Elliott said.

The donation will be a huge help for families in need as the threat of eviction is a real issue for many as inflation and a housing crisis continue.

“This will allow them to remain in their homes. This will allow them to start fresh with a clean slate,” Alisa Winston, executive director for Portsmouth Redevelopment Housing Authority, said.

“It’s a big deal, it’s huge. It keeps families together, and it gives people, once again, hope,” Shannon Glover, Portsmouth’s mayor said.

Helping families in need is special to Elliott as she experienced her own personal struggles while growing up in a single-parent household in Portsmouth.

“Especially for me who has been in a situation like that, my mother is a single mother, that’s what made it important,” the rapper said.

“Because I feel like I can relate to being in a place where you just don’t know where you’re going next.”

Missy’s mother is happy to see her daughter return home and give back to a city that helped cultivate her talents.

“The people are very caring here in Portsmouth. They are really good people.,” Pat Elliott said.

“So when we left and my daughter went to different places all over the world, she grabbed that DNA from the beautiful people here. We won’t forget it.”

The donation comes on the second annual “Missy Elliot Day” in Portsmouth where a renaming ceremony and parade were held to celebrate the change of McLean Street to Missy Elliott Boulevard and the rapper received a key to the city.

Tristan Thompson Under Probe Over Petition to Gain Guardianship Of His Younger Brother

Tristan Thompson is being probed by the Department of Children and Family Services in Los Angeles after filing a petition for guardianship of his younger brother, Amari Thompson.

Last month, the NBA star filed to become the legal guardian of his 17-year-old brother, who has special needs, The Blast reports. While he did receive temporary guardianship, a DCFS report was filed in response to Thompson’s guardianship request on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Thompson’s ex-girlfriend, Khloe Kardashian, along with her family, have been the ones caring for Amari since their mom, Andrea Brooks, passed away in January 2023. Last month, Thompson, 32, requested to care and make medical decisions for his brother.

“Amari has been in the custody of (Tristan) and he has been providing care, maintenance, and support to Amari,” the filing states.

In his filing, Thompson calls out Amari’s father for allegedly being an absentee parent.

“Amari’s father, Trevor Thompson, has actively been absent from Amari’s life since Andrea Brooks received sole custody of Amari and a support order against Trevor Thompson in July of 2014,” the filing says.

“Trevor Thompson has never fulfilled any of his support obligations towards Amari and has been actively avoiding them.”

The Kardashians show on Hulu saw Khloe taking Amari in after Tristan, who lives three houses away, had roof issues inside his home. In July, Khloe took to Instagram to share a heartfelt birthday post dedicated to the teen.

“Someone is 17 today!!!! Happy birthday sweet sweet Amari!!! We are all so blessed to have been touched by an angel such as you you are truly one of Gods greatest treasures,” she wrote.

While Tristan appears dedicated to caring for his brother and his two children with Khloe, daughter True, and son Tatum, the NBA champion has been accused of favoring his kids with Khloe over the other two he has with his ex Jordan Craig and a woman he cheated on Khloe with named Maralee Nichols.

Tristan did own up to fathering a child with Maralee while he and Khloe were in the middle of finding a surrogate for their second child. However, the Toronto native hasn’t publicly acknowledged his son, Theo, since. Earlier this month, Craig’s sister accused Tristan of being a “deadbeat dad” to his eldest son, Prince.

Yung Miami Reacts to City Girls Low Sales Projections, ‘That’s Good For A Bi*ch Who Can’t Rap’

City Girls are under fire amid reports the rap duo sold well under 10,000 units in first-week sales for their new “Raw” album.

JT and Yung Miami’s return to the music scene came last week with the release of their new full-length album “RAW (Real A** W***es).” The “Act Up” rappers gave listeners their usual upbeat synergy with fierce versus riddled with explicit in-your-face lyrics.

But the new project seemingly failed to engage listeners as reports surfaced claiming the City Girls only sold between 6,000 – to 8,000 units during the album’s debut.

Social media hasn’t been holding back its critique of the City Girls and their new album “going triple aluminum,” as one Twitter user put it.

“This goin 2x copper,” added someone else.

“Bruh 6-8k is insane lmao they may want to give it up at this point,” one user wrote.

But Yung Miami, real name Caresha Brownlee, is aware of the shade and decided to clap back. The “Act Bad” emcee responded to one critic who bashed their 6-8k first-week sales.

“That’s good for a bi*ch who voice y’all hate and can’t rap 😏,” she tweeted on Monday, Oct. 23.

She also warned naysayers to keep her name out of their mouths because she’s keeping an eye on all the shady tweets and who’s behind them.

“Keep my name out y’all mouth,” she wrote.

“All of a sudden everybody hate me, but I’m bookmarking everything,” she wrote. “I love to make a bi**h eat they words!”

The tweets highlight Caresha’s defensive response to the low sales projections while doing little to shut down claims of her new album performing poorly on the charts.

“RAW” is the City Girls’ third studio album, released on Oct. 20, 2023. The 18-track album has five single releases, including “Good Love” featuring Usher, “I Need a Thug,” “Piñata,” JT’s “No Bars,” and “Face Down.” The album also includes features from the likes of Juicy J, Lil Durk, Muni Long, and Kim Petras.

Dwight Howard’s Alleged Victim Breaks Silence About ‘Traumatic’ Assault

Dwight Howard’s alleged victim is speaking out after the NBA star denied his sexual assault allegations.

Dwight Howard’s alleged victim is speaking out after the NBA star denied his sexual assault allegations.

Howard has the streets talking after a lawsuit revealed he hooked up with a man named Stephen Harper at his home in Georgia. While the former NBA player admits to engaging in sexual activity with the alleged victim, he is denying the man’s claims of assaulting him and trying to force him into a threesome with a third party by the name of “Kitty.”.

The former Los Angeles Lakers center wants the lawsuit dismissed. But the alleged victim took to Instagram on Thursday, Oct 26 to reveal himself and clear his name.

“I would never expose a man or intentionally ruin someone’s career which is why I haven’t spoken about this until now,” he wrote in a post captured by Onsite.

Harper alleges the assault took place in July 2021 after he spent a few months engaging in explicit text message conversations with Howard. According to Harper, when he went to Howard’s home, the pro athlete surprised him when another man dressed up like a woman came out.

Harper claims Howard forced himself onto him by performing oral sex until he realized Harper wasn’t turned on. He allegedly proceeded to engage in sexual activity with Kitty while at times trying to fondle Harper.

“Mr. Harper was trapped in Defendant’s bedroom and believed that he would suffer imminent bodily harm if he resisted Defendant’s sexual advances,” the lawsuit said. Afterward, “Mr. Harper felt extremely violated and humiliated, and was in complete shock.”

Now, on Instagram, Harper labeled Kitty as “an unattractive man in their 40s” who “ambushed” him hours into his time at Howard’s home.

“Kitty walked in with a full beard, 2 inch heels, and a 28 pcs church wig,” Harper wrote. “Immediately I was thrown off, uncomfortable, and expressed that I wanted to leave.”

He went on to accuse Howard of having “forced himself on me” before further, forcing Harper to be driven home by Kitty instead of taking an Uber.

“The situation was traumatic and has affected me in many ways,” he added.

Harper claims the only reason it’s taken two years for him to speak out is because of “fear and intimidation.” But Howard claims Harper only filed the suit after he blocked him online once Harper tried to get money out of him.

Kitty is set to appear as a witness in the alleged assault case, Radar Online reports. Kitty is expected to defend Howard against Harper’s claims.

DJ Envy’s Former Business Partner Defends Him In Real Estate Scandal

Cesar Pina broke his silence about his “Real Estate RICO” scandal and made sure to defend DJ Envy’s honor.

Cesar Pina is finally breaking his silence about his “Real Estate RICO” scandal and making sure to defend DJ Envy’s honor.

Pina, a long-standing business associate of DJ Envy, was arrested last week on one count of wire fraud in an alleged investment fraud scheme worth millions of dollars, Entrepreneur reports. With Envy working so closely with Pina for years, the radio personality has become guilty by association after Pina’s arrest.

But as social media continues to make a mockery of DJ Envy and Pina’s alleged real estate scam, Pina likely went against his lawyer’s wishes by hopping on Instagram Live to clear the air.

During the nearly 25-minute live session, Pina maintained his innocence while seemingly admitting to owing people money. However, according to Pina (known as “Flipping NJ” on social media), if he goes to jail it’ll only take his accusers longer to get the money that’s owed to them.

Elsewhere, Pina denied any speculation into DJ Envy’s alleged involvement in the deals where people are owed money.

“DJ Envy was never in the room with me,” Pina said on the livestream. “DJ Envy has nothing to do with any of these 20 lawsuits of these people who are suing me. It f—ing sucks, bro. It pisses me off that all these people are bashing DJ Envy.”

Later during the stream, Pina seemingly mocked DJ Envy and his lawyer’s claims of being a victim of Cesar’s alleged scams.

“That’s the dumbest s— I ever heard in my life,” Pina said. “He’s not a victim. He was my partner, he was an investor.”

Pina is accused of frauding investors whom he promised to make big money on real estate deals in northern New Jersey. The accusations started online by someone Pina repeatedly called out during his livestream, Tony The Closer. Pina also called out Rick Ross and radio DJ Funk Flex for also making jokes about the alleged real estate fraud.

But the public accusations eventually led to 20 civil lawsuits Pina and his wife Jennifer are facing, Billboard reports. More than 30 investors have come forward, seeking over $40 million from Pina, according to one victim’s attorney.

Many are also wondering if DJ Envy was involved in any of the alleged scams considering how closely he worked alongside Cesar. Envy maintains his innocence.

Milli Vanilli Star Blames Media For Lip Sync Scandal That Led Bandmate ‘To Die Of A Broken Heart’

Milli Vanilli’s surviving member Fab Morvan is speaking out against the media, whom he feels sensationalized the group's lip sync scandal that eventually led to his partner's death.

Milli Vanilli’s surviving member Fab Morvan is speaking out against the media he feels sensationalized the group’s lip sync scandal that eventually led to partner Rob Pilatus’ death.

It’s been over 30 years since Milli Vanilli’s infamous lip sync scandal that resulted in the group’s Grammy getting revoked and becoming a laughingstock of the music industry. In 1989, Milli Vanilli was performing live when their track skipped, revealing the European duo as models whose vocals weren’t their own.

Record executive Frank Farian admitted Morvan and Pilatus sang none of their hit songs. In response, the Recording Academy revoked their 1990 Grammy for Best New Artist.

Milli Vanilli rose to fame following their 1988 debut album, Girl You Know It’s True, which had three number-one hits in the U.S., but the dream came crashing down following the lip sync scandal. Morvan continued his music career with his natural singing skills Rob Pilatus died at 32 from an apparent drug overdose.

Now amid the release of a Milli Vanilli documentary on Paramount+, Morvan is speaking out against the media’s treatment of the band and partially blaming them for Pilatus’ death.

“When I look back I realize when a scandal occurs it gets people to watch TV, it’s a business,” he shared on The Project. “Journalists are meant to be impartial and investigate but that was not done.”

“These two kids were being bullied and one of them died of a broken heart as a result,” he continued. “But the other one managed to go through with his passion.”

Morvan, 57, now realizes how young and inexperienced he and Pilatus were when they signed their recording contract without legal representation.

“I didn’t know what a recording contract looked like so I signed it without an attorney,” he said.

“We each got paid and when it came time for us not to sing we said we are not doing this. But we were told money is not free so we had to pay back what we were paid by working.”

The Milli Vanilli documentary premiered on Paramount+ on Tuesday, October 24.
