Mo’ Money: IRS’ Tax Bracket Changes May Mean More Money For You

More money is always a good thing!

The IRS released the federal income tax brackets for 2024, meaning there may be more money in your paycheck, CNBC reports.

The top tax rate will remain at 37% in 2024, but the earnings thresholds for each tier will go up about 5.4% higher, thanks to inflation. If you experience similar wages from last year, the adjustment could result in a slight paycheck increase, depending on your withholdings. Your federal and state paycheck withholdings affect how much you pay in taxes throughout the year. Taxpayers can expect a refund if they’ve overpaid or a tax bill if they haven’t paid enough.

The federal income tax brackets show how much is owed on each portion of your “taxable income,” usually calculated by subtracting the higher of the standard or itemized deductions from your adjusted gross income. Standard deduction increased for inflation, going up to $14,600 for single filers from $13,850 in 2023. For married couples, filing together could prompt a claim of $29,200 from $27,700.

The head of households may see their standard deduction jump to $21,900 in 2024, up from $20,800, according to Fox Business.

Yearly inflation dropped slightly in November 2023, but Americans are still feeling the wrath of rising costs such as housing and car insurance. Roger Stinnett, certified financial planner and managing director of wealth planning for First Foundation Advisors, recommends keeping a continuous eye on your finances because the constant changes can make things confusing. “You always want to keep a running total in your mind of how your income is changing because it’s complex,” he said.

Other tax provisions increased through the IRS, including the earned income tax credit amount. Families will be eligible to get close to $8,000 with three or more qualifying kids–an increase from $7,430 for tax year 2023. Employees will see health benefits as increases can cause a higher contribution to their health-flexible spending accounts, with the maximum contribution increasing from $150 to $3,200.

There are still a few things to keep an eye on this upcoming tax season. Your paycheck may have increased in 2024, but “new tax changes could still place you in a lower or higher bracket,” warned Mariner Wealth Advisors Director Ashton Lawrence. According to Stinnett, one “quick check” could be last year’s tax return. A large refund or balance should signal time to review withholding.

As always, taxpayers should keep track of tax law and life changes, including marriage, divorce, the birth or adoption of a child, retirement, buying a home, filing for bankruptcy, and more, which may affect your situation and adjust your paycheck withholding.

Boris Kodjoe On Why We Should Go ‘Full Circle’ Back To Africa

The inaugural Full Circle Africa Economic Conference (FCAEC) took place in Accra, Ghana, on Dec. 28 and Dec. 29

The inaugural Full Circle Africa Economic Conference (FCAEC) took place in Accra, Ghana, on Dec. 28 and Dec. 29, led by co-founder Boris Kodjoe.

The importance of recognizing the culture and heritage of the country while bringing economic advancement is just one purpose of the conference, which is part of Full Circle, which  Kodjoe started in 2019.

Through his organization, Kodjoe gathered international dignitaries, business leaders, activists, academics, and entertainment icons to join in this first Full Circle Africa Economic Conference to bring the people back home, so to speak, and allow the world to realize the opportunities available in Ghana and Africa.

Discussions addressed opportunities across the African continent, ranging from educational infrastructure to housing to sustainability and STEM.

“This year is the inaugural Full Circle Africa Economic Conference as we undertake a mind shift from charity and aid dependencies toward economic development opportunities and investing,” Kodjoe says. “Which is sort of the next frontier: entertainment industry, real estate infrastructure, tech. Africa represents 54 countries and a vast spectrum of potential opportunities. Now that the African Continental Free Trade area has been established, all countries can trade with each other without crazy tariffs or having to go through European countries.”

Dignitaries like the CEO of African Leadership Group and Sand Technologies, Fred Swaniker, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Nikole Hannah Jones, were among the conference’s speakers.

One of the most important things for Full Circle is to change the narrative that Africa doesn’t have a rich story or must rely on anyone else to function and/or grow and manufacture its resources.

“So taking control of our narrative means we need to be in control of telling our own stories,” Kodjoe says. “We need to be in control of developing, producing, and distributing our content to the world. And not letting somebody else tell our stories. That’s the first step to changing the narrative and changing our own stories; that’s very, very important. And I don’t care which sector you’re talking about. Manufacturing is another example where we have to take a bigger part of the value chain instead of letting our raw materials, the shift down and then making a fraction of the value chain rather than doing our own processing, our own manufacturing, and then, you know, exporting goods and services. Keeping, protecting, and powering, and keeping our talent on the continent and exporting goods and services is the goal. Rather than exporting our talent.”

Kodjoe feels there is a disconnect (with Black people) between the United States and our ancestry because our language and customs were taken from us. We need to reestablish a connection with our ancestry. Knowing where we came from while investing in Africa will help get the reconnection.

The Brown Sugar actor made it known that his calling is to empower people and to create an impact in the lives of as many people as he can.

“I think it’s my calling and my purpose,” he says. “To use my platform in order to create impact in order to touch as many people as I can in a positive way. So what you call giving back, I call stepping into my purpose and empowering those who haven’t been able to empower themselves.”

Big Daddy Kane Hopes ‘JAY-Z Day’ Becomes An Official NYC Holiday

"To see an artist get a national holiday, I’m all for it. I think it’s beautiful. Much respect to Jay-Z"

Before the year closed out last month, a resolution was introduced by New York City Councilwoman Farah Louis, who represents Brooklyn, to officially make Dec. 4 (Shawn Carter, AKA JAY-Z’s birthdate) “JAY-Z Day.” Many New Yorkers would accept and celebrate the motion and recognition, including one of the men who influenced and mentored a young JAY-Z when he was making his way into the music game, Antonio Hardy, better known as Big Daddy Kane.

TMZ caught up with the legendary artist and asked his thoughts on his fellow Brooklyn emcee getting an official holiday in the city they both grew up in. He stated it’s “real cool” that it may occur, and he hopes “it happens.”

“I think it’s real cool,” Big Daddy Kane said. “You got to understand hip-hop is a culture, a music culture, and now a music genre that people shunned upon, people looked down upon. And when you see it can grow billionaires, it can become multi-genre, where there are different forms of hip-hop. It can become the biggest-grossing music genre. And to see an artist get a national holiday, I’m all for it. I think it’s beautiful. Much respect to Jay-Z. I hope it happens.”

Kane has been an influence on many rappers when he was creating a path for them to follow.

The New York Post reported that Louis wants the holiday to happen due to the influence of the “God Did” rapper.

“The global phenomenon that is Jay-Z—born Shawn Carter—is widely known as an artist, mogul, husband and father, wealth builder and supporter of economic development and community causes. Dec. 4 as Jay-Z Day announces to the world how this Brooklyn son can be all things . . . Establishing an annual celebration to recognize a homegrown hero while proclaiming our municipal support is fitting.”

Last year, a tribute to JAY-Z that took place at the Brooklyn Public Library, “The Book of HOV,” brought fanfare and people from around the globe to see the art installation that features bookmarks and keynotes to the billionaire’s career that started in the borough of Brooklyn.

Draymond Green Rejoins Golden State Warriors After 12-Game Suspension

The NBA has reinstated the controversial player after he “demonstrated his commitment to conforming his conduct to standards expected of NBA players” while he was serving his suspension

The Golden State Warriors will have a key component to their team back in place when Draymond Green returns after being suspended indefinitely last year after hitting Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in the face on Dec. 12.

According to NBA.com, the league reinstated the controversial player after he “demonstrated his commitment to conforming his conduct to standards expected of NBA players” while serving his suspension. The move became official on Jan. 6. The league suspended Green indefinitely on Dec. 14.

While the volatile player was suspended, Green met with a counselor and had ongoing discussions with representatives of the league, the Warriors, and the National Basketball Players Association. As a condition for his reinstatement, he will continue to meet with those parties throughout the rest of the NBA season.

Green was suspended in November for five games after placing Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert in a headlock during a game. After being ejected from that game on Nov. 14, the league suspended Green for five games “for escalating an on-court altercation and forcibly grabbing…Gobert around the neck in an unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner.”

When the Warriors player was suspended in December, former NBA player Joe Dumars, executive vice president and head of Basketball Operations, said, “Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been suspended indefinitely for striking Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkić in the face. This outcome takes into account Green’s repeated history of unsportsmanlike acts.”

It was also stated that Green “will be required to meet certain league and team conditions before he returns to play.”

The Warriors have posted a respectable record, 7-5, without Green on the court. The team is in 10th place in the Western Conference with a 17-18 record this season. Golden State could have used his spirited play this past Sunday when they lost to the Toronto Raptors 133-118 at home. No timetable has been set for his return to the court.

Office Woes: How To Survive A Career-Stifling Boss

Great leaders know that if their team is strong and growing, they will too. If your boss didn't get that memo, here's how to deal.

Originally Published May 16, 2013

The office should be a place of productivity, revenue generation, impact creation, and growth. That said, we all know that not every day at work is so rosy.

Depending on how far along you are in your career, you may have already encountered it. For those who have not, get ready.

I’m referring to the day you realize that your boss is not here for you.

This can be interpreted in many ways, but the simplest definition of a boss who is not “here for you: is a supervisor who is not actively working to support your professional growth. A good supervisor does many things, but at minimum, they should be supporting your development because the more skilled you are, the better you will be at supporting their professional goals.

Unfortunately, things do not always work out this way, and many professionals are left to fend for themselves. Here are a few tips for how to move forward if you find yourself in this situation.

Don’t show your cards

There’s a chance you are misinterpreting workplace events. As you evaluate this situation, continue to do your work, offer to assist with initiatives, and contribute to your team’s goals.

In the meantime, find out if your supervisor is simply not helping you grow or is actively stunting your growth. Depending on your work culture and how people advance, this might be one in the same.

For now, we’ll assume it is the first option—just not helping you grow. You need to develop your own growth plan. This plan might be with your current company or it might be time to pivot. The point is to know what you want out of your career in both the short and long term.

Share these points with your supervisor and try to get their response. Until your situation changes, this person still holds a lot of power when it comes to determining your career path at the company; you should not limit communication and disregard this fact.

Find another advocate and do a gut-check

Let me clarify: Find another advocate with equal or more power than your supervisor and do a gut-check. This person can tell you whether they feel your plan is realistic based on your current circumstances and may potentially guide you down a different path that still helps you achieve your goals.

Execute until you hit a roadblock

As a few people in my family say: “The worst they can tell you is no.” If your advocate gave your internal plan the green light, then go. This is how you will know whether or not the people you work for are truly here for you. If you’re growing in a way that supports their goals, no one will stop you…unless your growth is not in their plan.

Few people will actively stop someone on a positive path. If no wrongdoing can be placed in your corner and you are still being blocked at every turn, then it might be time to employ your exit strategy.

However, if you receive constructive feedback after executing, that is great. You now know where you stand, and you have the ability to realign and carry on with your work.

Either way, these tips are meant to help you reach a point of certainty. Once you do, the next steps will be clear.

Lead And Level Up Your Employees With These Leadership Gems

As the boss, you're only as good as your team. Coaching subordinates to take on leading roles can facilitate success. Here's how.

Originally Published May 13, 2013

Leaders are only as great as their teams, and most successful managers know that empowering subordinates to take on key roles at a company leads to long-term wins.

In terms of team-building for the greater good of the company, coaching those who work toward your agenda often creates a win-win situation, where workers are motivated and can take things off your plate for you to make room for your own advancement.

But how do you position a good worker to be a great manager? Entrepreneur Paul Spiegelman detailed how for Inc.:

It’s noble to try to “promote from within,” but irresponsible to promote without preparation. In some cases, you may not have the resources available to train your next leaders, and when that happens, it may of course be necessary to look outside. Or maybe you hire someone who can train your next generation of leaders.

If you’re going to commit to advancing the careers of your best workers, and one of those opportunities moves them into a leadership position for the first time, always do the following:

  • Give them a mentor for a period of time.
  • Invest in either internal or external training.
  • Guide them in how to be an example to others.
  • Teach the difference between management and leadership.
  • Check in often to help them with  new issues they’ll deal with.
  • Make sure they enjoy the new role.

Remember: middle managers or supervisors have tremendous influence, and you can’t underestimate the importance of their roles. Equip and empower the employees you promote, and it will pay big dividends down the road.

Harriet Tubman , coins

The $20 Harriet Tubman Bill Has Yet To Be Released, But U.S. Mint Drops Commemorative Coins

The effort to feature Tubman on the redesigned $20 bill is still ongoing, with a new note expected to be issued in 2030.

The U.S. Mint has unveiled a series of commemorative coins honoring the iconic abolitionist Harriet Tubman. These coins mark the bicentennial of Tubman’s birth and pay tribute to her dedication to freedom, equality, and justice. The collection includes three coins, each with a unique design capturing different aspects of Tubman’s extraordinary life. The coins are available for pre-order, with shipments scheduled to begin in February, CNN reported.

“We all owe Harriet Tubman a huge debt of gratitude because I, and so many others, would not be where we are today if not for her heroism, her passion for freedom for our people and for her service to this country,” U.S. Mint Director Ventris Gibson, the first Black director of the bureau, told CNN. “At the Mint, we like to say that coins are miniature canvases of art, and the Harriet Tubman coins are truly stunning works of art.”

Ventris added, “These coins embody her spirit, her perseverance, her tireless efforts, and her desire for freedom for all individuals.”

Proceeds from the sale of the coins will go to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Harriet Tubman Home, according to the U.S. Mint website.

Gold $5 Coin: This coin features a post-Civil War portrait of Tubman and bears seven of her core values inscribed on the reverse side – faith, freedom, family, community, self-determination, social justice, and equality. The price is $718.

Silver Dollar: The silver dollar showcases an image of Tubman extending her hand on the obverse side. It is $82.

Half Dollar: The half-dollar coin, priced at $49, displays a full-body portrait of Tubman on the reverse side.

A set including each of the three coins is listed for $836.25 on the Mint website.

Tubman, born in 1822, was one of the most influential leaders in the abolitionist movement. After escaping slavery herself, she played a pivotal role in guiding enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, she contributed as a spy, scout, nurse, and cook in the U.S. Army.

While Tubman’s likeness on U.S. currency, specifically the $20 bill, has faced numerous delays, these commemorative coins provide an opportunity for her legacy to be celebrated. The effort to feature Tubman on the redesigned $20 bill is ongoing, with a new note expected to be issued in 2030. The Obama Administration had initially set a 2020 release date for the Tubman bill, The New York Times reported.

In August 2022, President Joe Biden signed the Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Act into law for the Mint to produce the coins. The legislation was introduced by Representative Gregory W. Meeks (D-New York) during Black History Month in 2020.

Fat Joe, Wyclef Jean, And Jelly Roll Join ‘Power To The Patients’ For Healthcare Pricing Transparency Event

Power to the Patients has been active, working over the last three years to get legislation passed around healthcare pricing transparency.

Following their Sept. 2023 PSA campaign featuring Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross, and other hip-hop heavyweights, the national nonprofit Power to the Patients, dedicated to pricing transparency in the American healthcare system, is taking things up a notch.

Complex reported that the organization has tapped Fat Joe, Wyclef Jean, and breakout country star Jelly Roll to appear at an event on Jan. 10 to raise awareness of its mission.

Ahead of the event, Fat Joe, who is all over their website serving the group as a spokesperson, released a statement.

“The U.S. healthcare system is America’s sickness,” Fat Joe said. “Healthcare price transparency isn’t a partisan or complicated issue. It’s common sense. The only people opposed to it are healthcare industry interests profiting by keeping patients in the dark. Price transparency can protect patients, families, employers, workers, even our own government from healthcare overcharging and pricing fraud as it does everywhere else in the economy.”

Fat Joe continued, “Clear prices allow consumers to choose affordable treatments without worrying that routine care will result in overcharges and even bankruptcy. Price transparency holds hospitals and insurance companies accountable, forcing them to compete and lowering costs, improving healthcare access, quality, and outcomes.”

Power to the Patients has been active, working over the last three years to get legislation passed around healthcare pricing transparency, spearheading a pair of bi-partisan bills in the House and Senate aimed at that purpose. According to the organization’s website, they believe that “Patients, families, workers, unions, and employers need systemwide healthcare price transparency to make fully informed decisions about the cost and quality of their care. All healthcare consumers have the right to upfront prices, and it’s time for our elected officials to stand up to industry profiteers by passing legislation to enforce price transparency for hospitals and insurers.”

To that end, they have championed H.R. 5378, which was passed by the House without objections on Dec. 11. According to Congress’s website, the bill is primarily concerned with making providers and insurers be more up front with policyholders about the costs of healthcare, as well as giving the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of the Treasury, and the Department of Labor the ability to implement and enforce the requirements of the bill.

On Dec. 14, a bill sponsored by Republican Senator Mike Braun was introduced to the Senate. The bill is SB 3548, or the Health Care Prices Revealed and Information to Consumers Explained Act. According to Congress’s website, this act is an amendment to the Public Health Service Act designed to provide price transparency for hospitals and insurers. It has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

A December 2023 report from Patient Rights Advocate established a need for legislation around hospital price transparency, stating that prices for common medical procedures are not uniform in either hospitals in the same network or state, with those prices fluctuating by an average of 10 and 31 times, respectively. According to the report, “Real prices are needed by employers and unions to make rational health plan decisions that make the best use of workers’ wage contributions and business earnings. Full price transparency will  lead to a functional, competitive, and accountable healthcare marketplace that puts downward and convergent pressure on prices just as in every other economic sector. Price transparency is necessary to restore trust in the U.S. healthcare system.”

According to Power to the Patients, the Jan. 10 event is part of a larger public advocacy campaign that will include a run of PSAs on digital media and billboards at Union Square and throughout the D.C. area. In conjunction with these efforts, Fat Joe will be in meetings with Congressional leaders, representatives from Power to the Patients, Patients’ Rights Advocates, and employers from across the country to spur action on healthcare pricing transparency legislation.

Lloyd Austin

Pentagon Waited Days Before Telling White House About Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s Hospitalization

Austin said that he recognized his fault in the matter, but also declared that he has the right to be private about his medical procedures.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin inadvertently caused quite a stir by not disclosing his condition after he was initially admitted to the Walter Reed Medical Center on Jan. 1. Politico first reported about the three-day delay from the Pentagon in informing the White House National Security Council of Austin’s condition. Austin was admitted to the hospital after “complications following a recent elective medical procedure,” according to Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder’s statement released on Jan 5.

Austin said that he recognized his fault in the matter, but also declared that he has the right to be private about his medical procedures, saying in a Jan. 6 statement, “I am very glad to be on the mend and look forward to returning to the Pentagon soon. I also understand the media concerns about transparency and I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better.”

Austin added, “But this is important to say: this was my medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure.”

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks took over Austin’s responsibilities, even though she was vacationing in Puerto Rico on her scheduled leave at the time. According to Ryder, Hicks “maintained full communication with the DOD staff throughout,” and Ryder said “She has monitored DOD’s day-to-day operations and conducted some routine business.”

Ryder also said in his statement, “At all times, the Deputy Secretary of Defense was prepared to act for and exercise the powers of the Secretary, if required.”

Officials for the Pentagon did not offer a description of Austin’s condition nor did they describe what kept him from his job during the week. They also did not release any details about Austin’s procedure including when and where it took place or if Austin had to be transported via ambulance to the hospital. According to a press release shared by Ryder, “While we do not have a specific date for his (Austin) release at this time, we will continue to provide updates on the Secretary’s status as they become available.”

During Austin’s hospitalization, the U.S. engaged in a targeted strike against an Iranian-backed militia leader in Baghdad, which Iraq is furious about, claiming that the attack is a violation of an agreement it has with the United States. The Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s office issued a statement to Al Jazeera, saying, “The Iraqi armed forces hold the forces of the international coalition responsible for this attack,” the Prime Minister’s office also called the attack a “dangerous escalation and aggression.”

Since Oct. 7, a group of Iranian-backed armed forces have carried out approximately 100 attacks on bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria, attacks they claim are in retaliation to the United States support of Israel’s bombing campaign against Gaza.
