Rick Ross Ensures Wheelchair Accessibility For Upcoming Car Show

A lawsuit by a disabled fan led to the needed changes

A lawsuit against recording artist Rick Ross has led the businessman to make his annual car show in Fayetteville, Georgia, wheelchair accessible.

According to TMZ, a disabled fan, Darris Straughter, filed a lawsuit last year after he traveled to Ross’ car show and was unable to attend after he was promised a shuttle bus would take him there, but it never showed up. The Maybach Music Group owner has agreed to provide accommodations to make the event wheelchair accessible.

An attorney for Straughter claimed organizers of last year’s event refused to give him a refund after the shuttle bus he had pre-arranged to take never showed up.

This year’s event will provide golf carts to those unable to get around through regular means.

Straughter’s attorney, John Hoover, said, “Thanks to Darris Straughter and the other wheelchair users who came forward, the upcoming Rick Ross Car & Bike Show will be so wheelchair accessible that even golf carts will be provided to wheelchair users.”

“This is a milestone in the ongoing litigation. Defendants continue to deny wrongdoing, but if it wasn’t broken, they wouldn’t have to fix it.”

Although Ross has agreed to provide the necessary accommodations to help wheelchair-bound individuals, the lawsuit continues to determine damages for the lack of access at last year’s program.

WSB-TV reported that Straughter said he flew to Atlanta from Miami after being promised a wheelchair-accessible shuttle would pick him up and bring him to the event from a designated parking lot. There was no shuttle, and after waiting five hours for one to show up, he returned to the hotel.

Due to Straughter’s filing, Ross has agreed to provide roundtrip wheelchair-accessible shuttles to the venue and will designate accessible parking spots in the lots. ADA-compliant restrooms will also be at the car show. The website will have information for those who may need assistance.

“They’re gonna be offering golf carts to every wheelchair user that wants to attend,” Hoover said.

“We asked for five things, and we got all five of them,” Hoover continued.

Straughter was happy with the changes and credits Ross for committing to them.

“My community is like amazed. Like, that’s beautiful. I salute him for that. I really do,” Straughter said.

This year’s car show takes place on June 7.

How Afro Wine Week South Africa Brings ‘Wealth And Inclusion’ To A Growing Industry

Taking over Cape Town on Sept. 5-13, Afro Wine Week SA is described as 'a 7-day experience that creates a lifetime of memories'

For the first time, Afro Wine Week South Africa is introducing winemakers, investors, entrepreneurs, and global brands to avenues of venture development and cross-border collaboration in an industry showing steady growth, Wine.co.za reports.

Taking over Cape Town from Sept. 5-13, Afro Wine Week SA is described as “a seven-day experience that creates a lifetime of memories” while shining a light on both new and established Black-owned wine brands, providing them a world stage to showcase their craft and give access to new markets. The weeklong event will host an international lineup of speakers, industry experts, and emerging leaders to highlight the shift in the landscape. “This isn’t just a wine event,” co-founder Tuanni Price said. “It’s a chance to shift the landscape — redefining who has access, who gets funded, and who benefits from the global wine economy. We’re creating a space where opportunity meets ambition — and, most importantly, capital.”

Price and Co-Founder Carol Burns curated the event to break down barriers such as tradition and exclusivity to connect “the entire value chain” — ranging from winemakers and distributors to buyers, media, and consumers. Participants will be able to engage in experiences, including workshops, tastings, and investment-driven networking opportunities. “Afro Wine Week moves people from curiosity to action. It offers a clear path into the wine industry, whether through land ownership, brand building, or distribution,” Burns said.

“It’s about opening doors and equipping people to walk through them with confidence.”

According to Cape Town Etc., some of the curated experiences include the Sips with Soul wine tour, which invites guests to dive deep into South Africa’s rich lineage of vineyards while enjoying tastings complemented by conversations with pioneering industry winemakers.

In addition, Afro Wine Week South Africa attendees will have access to Africa’s leading wine fair, CapeWine. Showcasing over 300 wine producers every three years, Price says, “CapeWine is central” to “ensuring integration into the larger industry landscape.”

While creating a growth space for people of color in the wine industry, the founders aligned the event to support the Pinotage Youth Development Academy (PYDA) and The Roots Fund. Pinotage invests in South African youth by giving them substantial training and career pathways within the industry, while Roots provides educational support, along with mentorship and development opportunities, to underrepresented communities dabbling in both the wine and spirits spaces.

The event aims to build a community of stakeholders to heighten representation, create wealth for communities of color, and generate new opportunities in a known, exclusive sector. As the industry continues to expand, Afro Wine Week South Africa is labeled as a strong reminder of how access and inclusion not only lead to opportunity but also feed innovation to ultimately strengthen the entire wine ecosystem.

National Park Service Restores Website Amid Justified Outrage Over Quiet Harriet Tubman Revisions

Historians and others say the changes to the language on the National Park Service website "erases history" and "changes the truth."

The National Park Service has officially restored slavery terms previously changed on its Underground Railroad page, which enraged Black Americans and historians.

“Changes to the Underground Railroad page on the National Park Service’s website were made without approval from NPS leadership nor Department [of Interior] leadership. The webpage was immediately restored to its original content,” said Rachel Pawlitz, a spokesperson for the park service, according to The Baltimore Banner. Before the reinstatement of language, words like “African American,” “bondage,” “enslavement,” “self-emancipation,” and “escape” had been edited to be excluded from the website.

Historians and others were thrown for a loop when Harriet Tubman was excluded from the page. Language regarding Black American pioneers like Tubman had been temporarily changed to “ordinary men and women coming together in harmony, united to pursue the extraordinary mission of helping those in their journey to freedom.”

Tina Wyatt, Tubman’s great-great-great grandniece, said the changes in terminology “whitewashes the importance of what she did” and “changes the truth.” Scholars, museum staff, descendants, and local site keepers learned about the National Park Service’s website changes through an Underground Railroad Facebook group.

“Why erase this history?” questioned “Bound for the Promised Land” best-selling author Kate Clifford Larson. “What are they feeling threatened about? I’m not clear on it. It’s just filled with hate. Does it feel satisfying to racists to erase this history?”

U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen was shocked when news of the website’s changes reached him during Monday’s town hall meeting of the Anne Arundel County Caucus of African American Leaders. “That’s obviously outrageous,” the Maryland Democrat said. “You can’t talk about history without slavery. You can’t talk about the Underground Railroad without its conductor, Harriet Tubman.”

National Park Service spokesperson claimed the outcry about the edits was dismissive of the hard work of the agency’s employees and invalidated the National Park Service’s commitment to telling complex narratives. The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitors Center in Church Creek, a part of the National Park Service network, has seen no changes to its website, as has the National Hampton Historic Site for the Towson plantation. Historians are specific in their word choice regarding the stories of slavery. Preferred words are “freedom seeker” and “enslaved peoples” rather than “runaway” or “slaves.”

Annapolis historian Janice Hayes-Williams says the terminology is important amid President Donald Trump’s attempts to remove the true language of Black history and erase the accomplishments of Black Americans like Tubman.

The website’s original content was restored as of Monday.

CHICAGO, HAROLD'S CHICKEN SHACK

Southside Chicago’s Famous Harold’s Chicken Shack Celebrates 75 Years In Business

The restaurant got its start in Southside Chicago in 1950.

Made famous in Southside Chicago and beyond, Harold’s Chicken Shack is celebrating 75 years as a family-owned eatery.

Its origins have become muddled with community lore, given its significance as a go-to fried chicken spot for locals and celebrities alike. The restaurant is known for its no-frills atmosphere, giving customers an actual “carryout” experience.

However, many across Chicago view Harold’s as a representative of its casual food culture. According to WTTW, the first eatery opened in 1943 and was founded by Harold Pierce and his wife Hilda, who moved from Alabama as part of the Great Migration of Black Americans. While that restaurant, H&H, served chicken feet and dumplings, Pierce found his knack for fried chicken with the first official chicken shack in 1950.

However, many locals have deemed different locations as the original chicken shack. Pierce’s daughter and Harold’s current CEO, Kristen Pierce-Sherrod, once said the original was on Kimbark Avenue. However, other articles detailed the flagship restaurants in different locations.

By 1975, over 20 Harold’s Chicken Shacks could be found across Chicago. By the time Pierce died, the locations jumped to around 30 to 40 storefronts. The franchise now hosts many operators, but the one with the most locations was Laverne Burnett.

Also known as “Chicken Lee” or “Mr. Lee,” Burnett owned between 10 and 14 stores. Now, his legacy continues with his granddaughter, Toneia Bailey, who, at 20, took over a location from her father.

“I like to feed people,” said Deneen Shenaurlt, a longtime employee who helped the multigenerational owners. “You feed people with love.”

Made fresh to go, no two Harold’s items are alike. Operators take creative liberties with Harold’s classic mild sauce and lemon pepper seasoning to douse while hot. The menus remain mostly the same, with offerings of wing-and-fry plates or parts of the chicken, as well as fish options.

Today, Harold’s has expanded into different versions found in other states. With Harold’s Chicken in Los Angeles and its Chicken and Ice Bar in Atlanta, the Chicago institution is building a new legacy as a Black-owned food staple nationwide. Eve Green, a Chicagoan and longtime customer, thinks the experience and taste make every purchase worth it.

“The freshness, the fries, the sauce, the flavor, the service, the politeness, the everything.”

Georgia Daycare Loses License After Giving Toddlers Benadryl Without Consent

A Benadryl scandal has led to the loss of this Georgia daycare’s child care license.

The Georgia church daycare center where an employee was arrested for giving toddlers unauthorized doses of Benadryl has had its childcare license revoked.

Fox 5 Atlanta reports that the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) revoked the license of Forsyth Methodist Church’s Caring for Kids daycare center on April 7. The center has been temporarily closed since March amid the ongoing investigation into a staff member who administered Benadryl to toddlers without parental consent.

“The Center has ten days to appeal the revocation before an administrative law judge with the Office of State Administrative Hearings (OSAH),” said Reg Griffin, DECAL’s chief communications officer. “The Center may not reopen until the appeal process is completed due to the previously issued Order of Emergency Closure.”

The closure and license revocation follow the March 10 arrest of Kendasja Mequia Hughley, who allegedly gave Benadryl to toddlers—as young as two years old—to make them drowsy during nap time. Investigators say that a co-teacher reported the incident to the daycare’s director on March 5, but Director Cathy Stevick waited up to six days before reporting the incident. Parents later reported that their children seemed unusually sluggish and “not themselves” when picked up from the daycare.

The daycare is part of the Bright from the Start program—Georgia’s Department of Early Care and Learning initiative that oversees childcare facilities. An investigation was launched, which revealed that three children were given Benadryl on at least two separate occasions in early March, incidents reportedly captured on camera. Benadryl is not recommended for children under six due to potential health risks and adverse effects.

On March 18, Stevick and a second teacher, Shelby Webb, were also arrested. Stevick faces three counts of failure to report child abuse, while Webb has been charged with one count each of simple battery and cruelty to children. DECAL advises affected parents to explore childcare alternatives through the free resource at qualityrated.org or by calling 1-877-ALL GA KIDS.

Alabama A&M Athletics Partners With Deloitte’s U.S. College Athletics For 1st Of Its Kind Collaboration

The groundbreaking alliance will set AAMU’s athletics department for long-term success by enhancing fundraising capabilities and heightening the strategic vision.

The athletics department at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) announced a collaboration with Deloitte’s U.S. College Athletics, marking the first-of-its-kind partnership between the tax services company and a historically Black college and university (HBCU), HBCU Gameday reports.

Deloitte, AAMU athletics leadership, and university stakeholders will work closely together to align on strategic priorities that will assist in developing the department’s long-term vision and implementing a high-level action plan to highlight measurable progress. The partnership terms include the professional services firm reviewing and analyzing how Alabama A&M functions at the fundraising operations level and establishing plans to heighten future initiatives.

The groundbreaking alliance will set AAMU’s athletics department on the road to long-term success by enhancing fundraising capabilities and heightening its strategic vision. Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant calls it a “transitional step.” “As the first HBCU to collaborate with Deloitte in this capacity, we are proud to be leading the way. Deloitte’s expertise will help us sharpen our strategic vision, elevate our fundraising efforts, and ensure we are positioned for sustainable success,” Bryant said.

“This is a pivotal moment for our department, our university and our Bulldog family.”

The combined ideation of Alabama A&M University and Deloitte brands reveals a shared commitment to innovation, leadership, and excellence, in addition to ensuring the Bulldogs stay in the competitive lane, along with being prepared to navigate the evolving world of collegiate athletics. “We are honored to collaborate with Alabama A&M University Athletics through this historic alliance. At Deloitte, we believe in the power of strategic collaborations to drive meaningful change, and it is especially rewarding to support an institution with such a rich legacy and bright future,” Deloitte’s Manager, Core Business Operations, Government & Public Services, ShaVonne M. Cammack, said.

“Together, we will work to strengthen AAMU’s foundation for growth, innovation, and long-term success.”

The announcement is an additional milestone of firsts as the Huntsville-based HBCU celebrates 150 years of academic excellence. According to Inside AAMU, Dr. Teresa Merriweather Orok, AAMU’s Executive Director at the Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Economic Development, was selected as the president of the University Economic Development Association (UEDA), making her the first Black woman and the first representative from an HBCU to lead the organization in its 50-year existence.

The school is also scheduled to co-host UEDA’s 2025 Annual Summit in October, which is being billed as the first time an HBCU will host a national summit.

IRS Calls On Taxpayers To Claim Recovery Rebate Credit By April 15 Deadline

Taxpayers who failed to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns should have received payments by January 2025.

There is still time to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, but the IRS encourages eligible taxpayers to act now to avoid missing the April 15 deadline.

According to the IRS, individuals who missed claiming the refundable credit on their 2021 tax returns or have not filed yet may still qualify. The credit is available to taxpayers who never received one or more Economic Impact Payments, also known as stimulus checks. As previously noted by BLACK ENTERPRISE, the IRS announced in Dec. 2024 that it would automatically issue unclaimed payments of up to $1,400, which vary based on circumstance. Estimates from the IRS totaled around $2.4 million at the time of the announcement.

Automatic payments to individuals who failed to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns were scheduled for distribution by late January 2025 to the bank account provided by the taxpayer on their 2023 tax return. Other payments may have been distributed to the individual’s mailing address on file. Individuals receiving the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit will receive letters in the mail regarding the refund. Taxpayers who receive little to no income are still encouraged to file the 2021 return in case they may be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit.

Separate from the refundable credit, the IRS announced in March that over 1.1 million people nationwide have unclaimed refunds for tax year 2021, totaling over $1 billion in refunds and a median refund amount of $781. “Under the law, taxpayers usually have three years to file and claim their tax refunds,” the IRS wrote in a March 11 release. “If they don’t file within three years, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.”

The IRS encourages taxpayers to file early as the April 15 deadline quickly approaches. “By missing out on filing a tax return, people stand to lose more than just their refund of taxes withheld or paid during 2021,” the IRS stated online.

The revenue service confirmed that most taxpayers have already received their Recovery Rebate Credit or Economic Impact Payments.

Martin vs. United States: Supreme Court To Review Federal Court Ruling Blocking Woman’s Lawsuit Over Wrongful FBI Raid

The Supreme Court will evaluate a part of the federal court's ruling that bars Martin and Cliatt from suing under a different avenue.

A 2017 FBI raid on a Georgia family’s home sparked a case that is now headed to the Supreme Court after agents barged into the wrong residence and held an innocent person at gunpoint.

It was October 2017 when FBI agents tore the doors off of Curtrina Martin’s home and handcuffed her then-fiancé, Toi Cliatt, at gunpoint inside her bedroom. According to Reason, Martin’s house was the wrong address, and her partner was not the man FBI agents were looking for. The raid was reportedly intended for Joseph Riley, a man who lived in a home one block away from Martin. In the case, Martin v. United States, the Supreme Court is evaluating a part of a federal court’s decision to bar Martin from her attempt to sue the government for the wrongful raid.

A ruling by the 11th Circuit stated the two houses “share several conspicuous features,” including their beige color and similar positioning of a large tree in the front. Raid leader Lawrence Guerra received immunity as judges stated it was difficult for FBI agents to “ascertain the house numbers on the mailboxes” due to how dark it was outside.

The federal court also blocked Martin and Cliatt’s attempt to sue under the Federal Tort Claims Act, which, according to The House, permits individuals to sue the U.S. government in a federal court for certain injuries or damages due to negligent or wrongful acts caused by federal employees. The 11th Circuit ruled that since the FBI had “discretion” in its preparation to carry out warrants, “some nexus with furthering federal policy,” and could “reasonably be characterized as complying with the full range of federal law,” Martin and Cliatt could not proceed with their claim under the Federal Tort Claims Act.

Although the Supreme Court will not reconsider the federal court’s conclusion, it will evaluate the part of the ruling that prevents Martin and Cliatt from pursuing a different possibility of obtaining legal assistance under the Federal Tort Claims Act.

In a Sept. 2024 YouTube video posted by the Institute for Justice, the family recalls the moments of the startling raid.
