Mattel Toys Honors Cuban Crooner Celia Cruz Just In Time For Hispanic Heritage Month

One of Cuba’s most celebrated singers is being honored during Hispanic Heritage Month with a beautiful replica that embodies her glowing persona beautifully.

Mattel Toys revealed a new addition to its longstanding Barbie Doll collection. In honor of La Guarachera de Cuban – Celia Cruz, Barbie Celia was unveiled on the company’s Instagram account.

The glamorous replica features the doll dressed in a magnificent red tulle evening gown with gold embroidered accents. Barbie Celia is also coiffed with the Black Cuban superstar’s trademark platinum wig. And because Mattel was meticulous regarding the details of the doll, the company even included Cruz’s well-recognized gap in her two front teeth.

There’s nothing more powerful than using your voice! 🎙️💃 This Hispanic Heritage Month, Barbie is thrilled to honor the memory of the inimitable “Queen of Salsa,” Celia Cruz, with a one-of-a-kind doll in her likeness,” Mattel wrote on IG.

“As a stage performer, on-screen actor, and recording artist who succeeded in a male-dominated music scene, Celia Cruz is also known as the “Latin Triple Threat.” Her long and storied career serves as endless inspiration for aspiring musicians, and through the Celia Cruz Foundation, her legacy continues to provide scholarships for young Latino students.”

Although Mattel didn’t mention it, Barbie Celia isn’t just about dropping another doll during Hispanic Heritage Month. Cruz’s representation of Black Latinos is an often disregarded aspect of Latinidad. Unambiguously Black Latinos rarely have an image that represents who they are.

Although the “Rie y Llora” singer struggled with discrimination and racism in Cuba and outside of the island, she often smiled through the pain.

A 2018 article by NPR detailed part of that journey.

Stephanie Fernandez wrote, “In the shadow of her most famous hits from the 1970s and subsequent decades, 1966’s Son Con Guaguancó may be no one’s go-to Cruz album, but it is perhaps her most significant. The album is an artifact of Cruz’s 1966 and her life in transition — from Cuba to exile in the United States, and from obscurity behind institutional barriers to international fame despite systemic racism and sexism.”

The nod by Mattel for Cruz is well-deserved, but the road to end anti-Blackness, discrimination and erasure of Black Latinos still has a long way to go.

La Guarachera de Cuba died in 2003.

The Anderson Family Travel Journal – The Campus Drop Off

The Ultimate Road Trip

“Inspired by Nissan Pathfinder, writer Chris Atwell has written a series about the fictional Anderson Family and imagined the adventures they might have on a summer road trip with Pathfinder. The story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in this article are fictitious. No identification with actual persons (living or deceased), places, buildings, or entities is intended or should be inferred.”

___________________________________________________________________________

The Anderson family arrives at a special destination on their road trip adventure to say goodbye to their eldest daughter Malena. Malena is excited to start her first year at college, at her mother’s alma mater no less—Class of ’94. It’s a bittersweet parting for Denise and Darryl, but the preceding weeks of exciting travel and fresh-made family memories soften the blow. Denise, the proud Mom, shares her experience.

The past 24 hours have been an emotional rollercoaster. Yesterday marked the end of our stay with my grandparents in Saint Helena Island, South Carolina. This trip was our first opportunity in years to make the trip as a family, thanks to our all-new Nissan Pathfinder. Finally, we found a family vehicle that was up to the task of ferrying the five of us—and our dog Juno—all these miles from Brooklyn and allowing for an overdue vacation with detours along the way.

It was heartwarming to find my grandparents healthy and full of vigor as ever, and the kids had a wonderful time connecting with their cousins. All too soon, it was time to leave. The tears flowed when we headed out this morning, and I knew there would be more to come. We were on our way to drop our eldest off at college! Could it be? Where did the time go?

The drive to the school from my grandparents’ home in the Gullah Lowcountry was about five hours. Malena and I decided to give her father a break by sharing driving duties. And we gave her phone a break from social media (finally!) by letting it charge on the Pathfinder’s wireless charging pad while she drove. Along the way, we talked about the college experience and what to expect. She shared her excitement about being on her own. I did my best not to dampen her enthusiasm by letting on just how much I would miss her. But it was hard. How did we get here so fast?

When it was Malena’s turn to drive our new Pathfinder, I realized for the first time how much she had matured when I wasn’t looking. There she was, in the driver’s seat, using the Head-Up display, confidently navigating traffic like she was born for this journey. None of it should have surprised me. She’s had her license for over a year and has proven to be a skilled and responsible driver from the start. Still, watching her handle such a rugged “grown-up” vehicle made me realize that I was looking at an astute, confident young woman who was ready to take on the world.

Once we reached the campus, everyone, including our two youngest, Zane and Janae, helped Malena unload her things from the completely packed cargo space and got her set up in her dorm room. I handled it better than I expected. I know Malena will be fine. I’m so proud of her.

Now her father, he was a blubbering mess!

Sherica Dalloo Warns Everyone That Children May Spread COVID-19 After Husband Dies When Kids Hosted Sleepover

Sherica Dalloo Warns Everyone That Children May Spread COVID-19 After Husband Dies When Kids Hosted Sleepover

A Florida wife and mother has a warning about the potential spread of COVID-19 coming from children. The message follows the loss of her husband of 11 years.

David Dalloo passed away from complications of the deadly virus on August 28 in Boynton Beach, according to CBS12. Sherica thinks her husband caught COVID-19 after the couple hosted a sleepover for their children.

The grieving widow spoke of her husband’s diligence in keeping himself and his family protected from the virus. He wore his mask and worked remotely. She also spoke about the impact of David’s death on the family.

“Our family has changed forever,” Sherica told the news outlet. “I’m a widow, with four children that I have to raise, and my youngest is three. Someone came to our home that was COVID positive. It actually was a child that brought it into our home.”

The woman suspects that a nine-year-old child who came for the sleepover was infected with COVID-19– but asymptomatic. All six family members ended up testing positive for the disease. Everyone recovered except for David. The dedicated family man was later admitted to JFK Medical Center, where he passed away.

“It was just like surreal,” she said. “He had to have surgeries. He had artificial lungs. He had to go on dialysis; he was in an induced coma.”

The hospital’s efforts proved to be futile.

Now, Sherica has a warning for everyone.

“I make sure, if we know people are coming, I say, ‘Kids, put your mask on.’ Right now, everyone is visiting you and want to see if you’re okay,” she explained. “You guys have to be safe. At the end of the day, I don’t want you guys to end up in the hospital or pass it on to another relative, maybe older, and something like this happens to them.”

As pediatric cases of COVID-19 continue to rise, everyone must continue to protect themselves.

The Dalloo family is asking for donations via GoFundMe to help assist his widow with housing and education costs. His co-workers created the fundraiser on behalf of Sherica. UGK, the 33-year-old man’s employer, covered the cost of his funeral.

Father of Four Becomes Six-Figure Cybersecurity Expert By Age 27 Without a Degree

Father of Four Becomes Six-Figure Cybersecurity Expert By Age 27 Without a Degree

Boyd Clewis isn’t your typical cybersecurity professional.

By age  27, Boyd landed a six-figure cybersecurity job at a Fortune 500 company. He didn’t have a degree or connections to get him in the door. But what he did have was a healthy level of curiosity and confidence that took him further than he expected.

“I have always had an interest in IT but I never pursued it because I didn’t have a formal education,” Boyd shared during an exclusive interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE. “I wasn’t sure how to get into the market.”

“I got my first experience tinkering around with computers while working in Accounts Receivable at a copy center.  All of our IT support staff was in New Jersey. If something went wrong with the computers, the company would have to ship the computer to New Jersey and get it fixed. It was a bottleneck for operations. I became the go-to computer guy even though I didn’t know anything. I was just using google. That’s when I realized that IT was something I was interested in and passionate about.”

An Unexpected Experience

In 2005, Boyd attended college and pursued Track and Field. But his college experience was short-lived. A few months after matriculating into college, Boyd became a father.  In order to take care of his family, he was forced to drop out of school and go straight to the workforce.

Boyd landed a job with one of the largest copy manufacturers in the world. He started his career as an Accounts Receivable Clerk making $13 per hour. Boyd knew that wasn’t his final destination because his true passion was information technology. But without formal education or connections, transitioning to the IT world seemed like an impossible feat.

Being a problem solver turned out to be a strength that has always carried Boyd forward. After noticing numerous computer challenges that the copy center was facing, Boyd stepped up to the plate. Although his knowledge base was limited at the time, he could always count on his trusted friend to give him the answers he needed: Google. Boyd used the time at the copy center to build his computer knowledge.

Then, Boyd and his entire department were hit with a layoff notice. Little did he know, it was exactly what he needed to reinvent himself. Boyd leveraged YouTube to train himself the basic computer knowledge he needed to make a career transition.

From College Dropout to Cybersecurity Expert

At 21-years-old, Boyd landed a job providing IT support at a software company. He started working the night shift but his skills opened doors for opportunities beyond his job description.

Before he knew it, he was assisting with the company’s security assessments. He was promoted to the day shift and took a lead role in helping the company strengthen its security compliance process. As he progressed at the company, he used his downtime to obtain certifications that he thought would make him more marketable.

“Time is something you never get back,” Boyd says. “I don’t believe anyone should work for a company that’s not going to invest in them. I wanted to add certifications under my belt. I told the company I would do the training on my own if they would pay for the certifications.”

Based on the recommendations of others, Boyd pursued the CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification. He also added the following certifications to his resume:

  • CCSK (Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge)
  • CISA ( Certified Information Systems Auditor)
  • QSA (Qualified Security Assessor)

Boyd quickly realized that he needed more than IT training to take him to the next level in his career. Back in 2013, Boyd was rejected for a role at American Airlines despite having a list of certifications behind his name. Instead of relying solely on certifications, Boyd decided to learn the skills that would make him an in-demand IT professional.

Developing a Six-Figure Niche

When Boyd became a cybersecurity specialist focused on credit card data security, his income and job opportunities skyrocketed.

Two years after receiving a rejection letter, American Airlines reached out to Boyd with a better role: Senior Security Architect for the entire organization.

“I was terrified. I was going from IT analyst at a small company to working at one of the largest airlines in the world,” says Boyd. “I had a moment of panic and was going to rescind my acceptance of that offer. I was thinking I didn’t have the education or background to work in a corporate environment like this. But my wife kept me going. She said she was watching me and studying my work. She mentioned that nobody knows this stuff like I do. So I became an internal consultant for American Airlines. I showed them how to implement new applications in order to maintain compliance.”

Boyd quickly became known as an expert in PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) and was asked to speak at conferences and events around the world.

Although PCI standards are an integral component of a company’s security assessment, many IT professionals were not well-versed in this area. For the largest companies in the world, non-compliance could come with substantial fees.

The PCI DSS provides a uniform set of credit card security practices that merchants are required to follow. Failure to comply can pose threats to credit card users and merchants.

This specialized skillset put Boyd in the driver’s seat of his career. He became an expert in the PCI standard and companies were willing to pay a premium price for his expertise. A few years later, he was able to double his income by becoming a consultant. Instead of helping companies prepare for third-party security assessments, he took on the role of security auditor.

Helping More People Pivot During the Pandemic

As Boyd started tapping into higher income opportunities, he created boot camps to help others do the same. On the weekends, he hosted events in different cities and countries to teach others in-demand IT skills. His training helped more people double their income within 90 days, going from $50,000 IT support worker to six-figure cybersecurity professional, according to testimonials.

COVID-19 pushed all of Boyd’s in-person workshops into an online program. Instead of being a setback, the pandemic provided an opportunity for Boyd to reach more professionals. To date, Boyd has helped over 300 IT professionals gain the confidence and skills needed to accelerate their IT success. He teaches others how to achieve six-figure success without studying for tons of certifications.

Boyd’s programs have been a hit among IT professionals. By helping more people expand their income potential, he’s been able to develop a seven-figure business in less than a year. As the founder of Baxter Clewis Consulting, he’s been able to provide mentorship, internship opportunities, and step-by-step training that IT professionals struggle to find anywhere else.

“I didn’t set out to get rich from this,” Boyd says. “I believe when you help people get what they want, there’s no way you can’t be successful.”

Now, Boyd is building a foundation for his three boys and daughter to do the same. Through his example, he’s showing that barriers can be broken and you can achieve success by solving problems that others have.

HBCU Student-Athletes Class Action Lawsuit Vs. NCAA Allowed To Go Forward

HBCU Student-Athletes Class Action Lawsuit Vs. NCAA Allowed To Go Forward

A U.S. District Court Judge has handed HBCU student-athletes a small victory denying the NCAA’s motion to dismiss, in part ruling the claims by two former student-athletes can move forward.

The case, filed last year, claims the NCAA’s Academic Performance Program (APP), designed to improve student-athlete performance, is racially discriminatory and the NCAA knew it but enforced it anyway. The suit also alleges the APP undermined the HBCU mission to serve underserved Black communities.

According to HBCU Gameday, U.S. District Court Judge Richard Young denied the NCAA’s motion to dismiss, in part, allowing the suit brought by Troyce Manassa and Austin Dasent, who alleged unequal treatment and injuries caused by the NCAA’s intentionally-created unequal system.

The pair also alleges the APP system denies HBCU athletes privileges and benefits enjoyed by their peers at predominantly white colleges and universities including unequal access to scouting, career and other opportunities. Additionally, Manassa and Dasent claimed the APP system caused them emotional harm, humiliation, embarrassment and degradation.

The court further ruled that the pair’s claims should not be considered untimely because the plaintiff’s did not discover the discriminatory purpose of the APP until just before filing the suit.

“The NCAA knew that the APP would negatively affect Black student athletes at HBCUs,” Austin Dasent, plaintiff and a former member of the Savannah State University men’s basketball team said in the suit. “You can’t keep moving the goalposts and call it reform when, at the end of the day, Black student-athletes at HBCUs are not given the same tools and opportunities to succeed even before we hit the fields and courts.”

Judge Young did dismiss the plaintiff’s claims against the NCAA Board of Directors and the NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors.

Manassa and Dasent are trying to turn their suit into a class action. If the case gets certified, it would represent the hundreds of HBCU athletes that have been negatively affected by the program.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic affecting all HBCU sports last year, several teams had successful seasons. The North Carolina A&T track teams won the NCAA men’s and women’s track and field national championships and sent nearly a dozen athletes to the summer Olympics. Sprinters Trevor Stewart and Randolph Ross Jr. became the first N.C. A&T athletes to win Olympic medals, bringing home two golds and a bronze.

Meanwhile Texas Southern and Norfolk State both made the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and won their First Four games. Texas Southern defeated Mount St. Mary’s and Norfolk State defeated Appalachian State University.

According to the Undefeated, the three schools gained nearly $1 billion in exposure due to what their athletes accomplished.

Rep. James Clyburn Says He Pushed Biden About Nominating A Black Woman For The Supreme Court Before Giving Endorsement

Rep. James Clyburn Says He Pushed Biden About Nominating A Black Woman For The Supreme Court Before Giving Endorsement

U.S. Representative James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said he pressed President Joe Biden about nominating a Black woman to the Supreme Court before he gave his endorsement.

Clyburn confirmed reports that he pressed Biden in advance of the Democratic Primary debate last February on Bloomberg TV’s Balance of Power. At the end of the debate, Biden expressed his desire to name the High Court’s first Black female justice.

Clyburn, who has three daughters, told Balance of Power host David Westin that he couldn’t bring himself to endorse Biden until he found out Biden’s feelings on nominating a Black woman if a spot opens.

“I have three daughters,” said Clyburn. “I think I would be less than a good dad if I did not say to the president-to-be, this is an issue that is simmering in the African-American community that Black women think they have as much right to sit on the Supreme Court as any other women, and up to that point none had been considered.”

According to the new book Peril, written by journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, Clyburn wouldn’t give Biden his endorsement until he committed to nominating a Black woman. The book also says that during a break in the South Carolina debate Clyburn pushed Biden to make his intentions clear, which he did.

The debate carried Biden to a primary win in the state, which jump-started his run to the White House and the defeat of former President Donald Trump.

Liberal advocates have been pushing Justice Stephen Breyer 83, to retire so Biden can fill his vacancy. Breyer has not decided whether he would retire, adding his health would be the primary consideration in that decision.

Biden has fulfilled his promise to this point, listing potential nominees including California Supreme Court Justice Leondra Kruger, Washington federal appeals court judge Ketanji Brown Jackson  and South Carolina federal district judge Michelle Childs.

Despite Trump serving just one term, he was able to put three conservative judges on the bench, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

Man Spat, Wielded Knife At 4-Year-Old Girl And Her Father Who Asked Him To Stop Smoking Marijuana

Man Spat, Wielded Knife At 4-Year-Old Girl And Her Father Who Asked Him To Stop Smoking Marijuana

On a New York City subway train more than a week ago, a father who was riding the train with his daughter was spat on and threatened with a knife by another rider after he had asked the young man to stop smoking weed.

The incident was caught on video and now the New York Police Department is searching for the man.

According to Eyewitness News, NYPD has released a video that shows a subway rider spitting on a man and his 4-year-old daughter because the father asked the man to stop smoking marijuana on the train. The incident took place nearly two weeks ago in New York City in the Bronx on a Manhattan-bound subway train at about 3:20 p.m. on September 5. As the man was sitting in the subway car, the 35-year-old man complained about the smoking and it set off the man who was smoking.

The man allegedly flipped out and screamed at the man and the little girl and he spat at them, and then he pulled out a knife as he threatened to stab them. This took place on a D train that was heading southbound. The father grabbed his daughter and got off at the Fordham train station in the Bronx.

Another passenger on the train captured the scene on his mobile phone. The man who was smoking the marijuana stayed on the train after the disturbance took place.

Police authorities released the video that was taken that day and is asking the public to help track and identify the man who threatened the man and his daughter.

If anyone has any tips that would lead to the identification of the suspect to please call the Crime Stoppers hotline at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept strictly confidential.

Charges Against T.I. and Tiny In Sexual Assault Case Dismissed In Los Angeles

Charges Against T.I. and Tiny In Sexual Assault Case Dismissed In Los Angeles

Earlier this year, after multiple allegations were levied against reality TV couple, rapper T.I. and his singing wife, Tiny Harris pertaining to alleged sexual assaults, the Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation into them.

On Thursday, a Los Angeles judge declined to hear a case that involved a woman who accused the celebrity couple of sexually assaulting her in 2005 stating that the statute of limitations has expired.

According to TMZ, T.I. and Tiny will not be facing a trial for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in Los Angeles back in 2005. Documents were obtained that stated that prosecutors decided not to charge the couple because the case falls outside the statute of limitations. The 10-year statute of limitations has expired.

The accuser had originally filed a police report earlier this year that alleged that T.I. and Tiny drugged the accuser and assaulted her sometime early in 2005 after they met her at a club.

Back in May, Steve Sadow, an attorney for the couple, maintained their innocence considering the Harrises don’t know who the women are who made the accusations.

“Even assuming the story in the Daily Beast is close to accurate, it appears the LAPD ‘accuser’ has chosen once again to remain anonymous, thereby preventing us from being in a position to disprove or refute her allegations — or even examine them,” the statement from the attorney said. “Meanwhile, although we now appear for the first time to have the name of an ‘accuser’ who supposedly filed a police report with LAPD, we have absolutely zero details about her or her claim.”

A woman who says she met the couple at a Los Angeles nightclub and had accepted a sip of Tiny’s drink. She recalled the couple inviting her back to their hotel room where the three allegedly showered together. The woman says she fell ill while T.I.  performed a sexual act on her despite her telling him “no.”

She said her last memory was throwing up in the bathroom before she woke up the next morning “very sore” with a “burning/itching sensation” in her genital area.
