Darryl George Loses Racial Discrimination Case While Judge Allows Sex Discrimination Claim To Carry On

Keep your head up, Darryl!

Darryl George, the Black teen punished by a Texas school district for refusing to change his hairstyle, lost his racial discrimination case as a judge permitted his sex discrimination case to proceed, CNN reports.

U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey Vincent Brown said George and his family “have not shown a persistent, widespread practice of disparate, race-based enforcement” of the hair policy. “At most, the plaintiffs allege only two instances: the allegations underlying George’s case and those underlying the Arnold case also pending in this court,” Brown said. “But these two instances alone are insufficient to establish a pattern of conduct going on ‘for so long or so frequently’ that it evinces a ‘persistent, widespread practice.’”

The judge also dismissed the family’s other claims, including infringement of George’s First Amendment free expression rights and request for “compensatory damages and injunctive and declaratory relief” for claims of “mental anguish.”

However, the sex discrimination claims in a federal civil rights lawsuit can continue.

Brown said while the school district provided reasons why a dress code had been implemented “they provide no support for the narrower question that forms the basis of this claim: what is the rationale for the dress code’s distinction between male and female students? Because the District does not provide any reason for the sex-based distinctions in its dress code, the claim survives this initial stage.”

This ruling comes just a few months after another federal judge ruled the state’s CROWN Act, a law prohibiting discrimination against hair texture and protective hairstyles like locs and braids “commonly or historically associated with race” does not rule out school dress codes that limit a student’s hair length. In summary, the Barbers Hill Independent School District did not violate state law in their continuous efforts to punish George for the length of his locs

Following the CROWN Act decision, George described how the lengthy ordeal made him feel. “It puts a lot of emotions on me. Anger, sadness, you know, disappointment,” he said while holding back tears.

According to The Guardian, Brown dismissed additional suits against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton, who, in the suit, were accused of failing to enforce the act, which went into effect in Sept. 2023.

Toward the end of his ruling, the judge compared George’s case to one from 1970, where a judge ruled against a school district based in El Paso, Texas. The unnamed district tried to prevent a male student from enrolling due to his hair length, finding it violated district policy. The ruling was later overturned by an appeals court, but the judge claimed that “the presence and enforcement of the hair-cut rule causes far more disruption of the classroom instructional process than the hair it seeks to prohibit.”

Brown agreed. “Regrettably, so too here.”

This is not the first time Barbers Hill’s hair policy has faced scrutiny. In May 2020, it faced a federal lawsuit filed by two other students who withdrew from the high school. After one decided to return following a temporary injunction granted by a federal judge, the student said in a pending suit there was “a substantial likelihood” that his rights to free speech and freedom from racial discrimination would be violated if he was barred.

For Only the Second Time in 70 Years, a Black Miss Iowa is Crowned

McKenzie Kerry has made history in Iowa by winning Miss Iowa for 2024. Kerry is the second Black woman to win the title in over 70 years.

Twenty-six-year-old McKenzie Kerry has made history in Iowa by winning the Miss Iowa USA pageant in 2024. Kerry is now only the second Black woman to win the title in over 70 years in a state where the population is overwhelming white.

According to the Iowa State Data Center, African Americans comprised slightly more than 4% of the state’s population as of 2021.

“When we think about the figures and faces of our community, I think it’s important that Black women and Black girls can have someone that they look up to,” Kerry told the local television station KCCI. “I’m honored to represent myself and my Black history.”

According to The Miss USA website, Kerry is a corporate trainer, community leader, and professional cheerleader. She graduated magna cum laude from UNC Charlotte with a bachelor’s in business. In addition to working as a learning and development consultant for Principal Financial Group, she’s the owner and founder of Twenty-Eight Minna –- a luxury jewelry brand for everyday people.

For her final look, she wore gold mesh hoop earrings designed by Aminna Taylor, a local Black-owned designer who started her business two years ago.

“It is difficult as a small business. We really have to work hard to get the brand recognition to show that we are a legitimate company,” said Taylor. “Any time we have somebody who wears our pieces or provides a review, it really does help show that we are a great company to work with. It was really just a great opportunity for me.”

Kerry plans to continue to use her platform to support small businesses and uplift Black women.

“Being able to support the community is awesome, but also being able to support a Black woman who is hustling and grinding and has truly created an incredible product is amazing, too,” Kerry said.

Kerry competed for Miss USA in Hollywood, California, on Aug. 4th, 2024. Michigan’s Alma Cooper won Miss USA 2024 at the 73rd annual Miss USA competition.

Meet The Friends Behind The Sold Out Black-Owned Pop-Tarts Brand ‘Bop Tarts’

Jon Gray, Pierre Serrao, and Lester Walker created Ghetto Gastro, the brand behind the toaster pastries and pancake and waffle mix found in a black box in Target’s pastry section.

“Bop Tarts” stands for Black-owned pastries, according to Ghetto Gastro’s TikTok. At the heart of their brand is their home. The co-founders describe The Bronx as a muse and driver of global culture.

“It’s where Caribbean, Latin, Asian and African cultures seamlessly thrive together, often creating new flavors of their own -– including us,” a statement from the co-founders reads on the website.

Their home inspired the unique flavors for the toaster pastries, ranging from Chocolate Raspberry (the hardest one to get your hands on) to PB&J and Maple Apple Cinnamon. People are also raving about the pancake and waffle mix, which comes in Strawberry and Sweet Potato, a fan favorite.

“We’re a flavor company. We layer flavor the same way hip-hop layers samples and interpolations: as a way to expand, comment, shake up, share, and revel in our collective memory,” the co-founders added on their social video.

‘Ghetto’ Is Sparking Some Controversy

Even with its popularity on social media, some users say using the term ‘ghetto’ in a Black-owned brand is off-putting.

“I love the Bop tarts, but the Ghetto Gastro is bothering me,” one TikTok user commented under a video posted on the brand’s account.

A creator responded, stating, “It’s provocative. It gets the people going.”

The co-founders doubled down on their decision to name the brand Ghetto Gastro.

“To us, ‘Ghetto’ means innovation. It’s in our name as a reminder of why we do what we do and who we do it to honor: the under-represented, under-estimated, and too often ignored,” the friends stated.

Aside from toaster pastries and mixes for pancakes and waffles, the co-founders also have syrups to purchase. Syrup flavors include Maple Cider and Spicy Maple.

Ghetto Gastro can be purchased at Target and online.

Kai Cenat Claims Kamala Harris And The Secret Service Keep Ringing His Line

Cenat doesn't get the alleged interest from the Harris campaign.

Kai Canat thinks that Vice President Kamala Harris and the Secret Service keep calling his phone. He announced his suspicions during a recent episode of his livestream.

Given the boldness of the claim, clips of his words went viral on Aug. 6. In the video, he laments about the Secret Service calling him multiple times. He doesn’t get their alleged interest in speaking with him, considering that he doesn’t “know goddamn sh*t about politics.” An X user, whose account name is Feared Buck, reposted the footage.

“I’ve got the f**king Secret Service calling me five times, ni**a! I don’t know goddamn sh*t about politics my ni**a, I don’t know nothing,” he exclaimed in the footage.

He detailed another alleged instance of Harris and the Secret Service plotting for a collaboration, this time through a girl he’s been trying to get with.

“I had a bad bi**h that I’ve been trying to get on for, like, the last three, the last…Two years that I haven’t spoken to in, like, a year,” he shared. “I haven’t spoken to this girl in so goddamn long who had the audacity to text me, ‘We need you a part of the campaign.’”

It’s unconfirmed if Harris is really seeking out Cenat’s endorsement. However, his huge following would surely boost advocacy for her campaign. Currently, he boasts 12.1 million followers on the livestreaming app Twitch.

Anyways, Cenat doesn’t think his platform would align with a political conversation.

He added, “If, someway, somehow, something was to go into where I do a stream [for] politics, I’m going to be 100% honest. I’m going to sit on my stream and say, ‘Why did you guys call me?’ You know, I don’t know! I’ve never done anything with politics, and these blogs are like, ‘Yo, you’ve got to do this sh*t, Kai.’ And it’s all the top blogs.“

Moreover, Cenat is more known for his hijinks than his political insight. More recently, he made headlines for nearly getting banned from Twitch for pretending to light indoor fireworks. Despite this, his place on the major social media platform remains impactful across industries.

Solange Knowles Brings Back Popular Saint Heron Glassware

While her latest collection is exclusive to Moma, Saint Heron has released its glassware to various stores.

Solange Knowles is back with her popular collection of Saint Heron Glassware, but this edition boasts new colors.

Knowles’ first dip into glassware earned much acclaim, given the first drop sold out in two hours. Since debuting in June 2023, fans have begged for another release. Fortunately, Knowles obliged their request, restocking the collection, deemed a Small Matter.

The glassware comes in three shapes, with the latest colors being topaz and onyx. Sold through the MoMA Design Store, buyers can purchase the goblet, wine glass, and cordial from $41 to $45. Members of the New York-based museum can take off an extra 20%, making the collection more affordable.

In its description of the products, the items are crafted from “lightweight borosilicate glass” to create their feel and shape. It further details their artistic inspiration, stating the design “draws inspiration from Brutalist architecture and geometric motifs for visual statements that foster interpretation and engagement.”

The website added, “Saint Heron strives to deepen and expand artistic interest in the contributions of Blackness to objects, arts and design. The collection continues Saint Heron’s response to our own meticulous interrogations—of space, and of self—as aesthetic-forward incarnations of intuition-led processes in small-scale object creation.”

According to Domino, Knowles first discovered her knack for the art while taking a glassblowing class in Florida. In her initial release, the handmade four-piece collection ranged from $37 to $45.

While her latest collection is exclusive to MoMa, Saint Heron has released its glassware to various stores. Another set, hosting amber shades, is available at Blackman Cruz, with individual pieces starting at $129.

Most glassware is sold out on the multidisciplinary artist’s direct website. However, those curious can learn more about Knowles’ process on the platform.

“Propelled by Saint Heron’s own musings on the voices and futures objects contain, the five-item handblown glassware line demonstrates the synthesis and tension of sentiment and physicality in our environments,” her website states. “Each piece transmutes aesthetically sensitive-yet-bold sculptural qualities and geometric motifs into visual statements that foster natural interpretation, perception and engagement. To sit with and hold their form, weight, beauty and force is to witness dynamic stillness in uniquely varied textures, silhouettes, color palettes, and transparency and opacity ranges.”

MyKayla Skinner, Simone Biles

MyKayla Skinner’s Mouth Got Her In Trouble, Now She Wants Simone Biles To Call Off Her Fans

Later in the video, Skinner directly appealed to Biles to help her by directing her followers to stop making death threats she says have been aimed at her and her family, shortly after appearing to gaslight Biles’ interpretation of her comments about the rest of the team.

MyKayla Skinner, an ex-member of Team USA’s gymnastics squad during the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, is pleading for Simone Biles to help her after she and her family have allegedly received death threats over her comments about the current Olympic team.

In June, Skinner criticized everyone on the current Olympic gymnastics team except for Biles, stating in a since-deleted YouTube video, “Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and the depth just isn’t what it used to be. I mean, obviously, a lot of girls don’t work as hard. The girls just don’t have the work ethic.”

According to On3.com, Skinner practically begged Biles to step in, posting a video to her Instagram account, which she captioned, “I love our country and don’t want to take anything away from our athletes. Let’s use this time to build each other up, not tear others down.”

In the video, Skinner described people “cheering on” the bullying she says she has received as people have responded to Skinner’s comments anew following Team USA’s women’s gymnastics team winning the gold medal. Biles’ post referencing Skinner’s comments after their win.

“I sincerely hoped that this topic wouldn’t need to be revisited, but unfortunately, things have really gotten out of hand lately. And it’s one thing to disagree with me regarding something I have said or a point I was trying to make. But it’s something else entirely when that turns into cyberbullying or even worse,” Skinner said.

Skinner continued, “Watching people cheer on the bullying — which has led to threats of physical harm to me, my husband and our daughter — is disgusting. So please, at this point, I’m just asking for it to stop for the sake of my family because enough is enough.”

Later in the video, Skinner directly appealed to Biles to help her by directing her followers to stop making death threats she says have been aimed at her and her family, shortly after appearing to gaslight Biles’ interpretation of her comments about the rest of the team.

“If Simone truly believes that I called our team lazy and lacking talent. And if that’s really how she feels, I am really heartbroken over it. But not just heartbroken because it isn’t what I feel or even how I previously said. But because Simone’s latest post and others that followed it fueled another wave of hateful comments, DMs, articles and emails. Hate that includes death threats to me, my family, and even my agent. My family and my friends don’t deserve to be caught in the crossfire here. They’ve done nothing.”

Skinner continued, “To Simone, I am asking you directly and publicly to please put a stop to this,” Skinner said. “Please ask your followers to stop. You have been an incredible champion for mental health awareness; many people need your help now. We’ve been attacked in ways that I’m certain you never intended. Your performance, the team’s performance and the Olympics in general should be a time that we support one another.”

Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr., Quinton Ross, Alabama State University, NCAA

Alabama State University President To Join NCAA D1 Finance Committee

The committee will assist the Division I Board of Directors in the oversight and approval of the annual budget and the allocation of Division I members revenue distribution

Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr., the President of Alabama State University, has been selected to serve on the NCAA’s Division 1 Finance Committee. The committee will assist the Division I Board of Directors in the oversight and approval of the annual budget and the allocation of Division I members revenue distribution.

According to a press release issued by the university, Ross begins his term on August 7 and in addition to the Division I Finance Committee, he also serves on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics.

Following the shakeup to college athletics via the $2.8 billion antitrust settlement the NCAA agreed to in May, most conferences are moving towards a revenue-sharing model, which necessitates a committee that allocates said resources to the conferences.

Ross’ résumé is impressive, in addition to serving on numerous boards and councils such as the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities Board of Advisors, the HBCU Capital Financing Advisory Board, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Board of Directors, and serving as Chairman of the Southwestern Athletic Conference commission; Ross was also named the Thurgood Marshall Fund’s Educator of the Year in 2023.

According to the Montgomery Advertiser, Ross left his position as the Senate minority leader of the Alabama State Senate in 2017 to accept a position as the President of Alabama State University.

Ross stated in a press conference announcing his decision, “This community, which I love, wrapped its arms around me for those 15 years. Running four times for elections and three of them unopposed, I truly have been blessed with the opportunity to serve such a wonderful community, and I’m hopeful that, in some small way, my services have made a difference to the citizens in my district and throughout the state of Alabama.”

Ross continued, “Today, I’m choosing to travel the road less traveled to become the 15th president of Alabama State University, my prestigious alma mater who stands at 150 years old.”

According to HBCU Gameday, since his acceptance of the position, Ross has guided the university admirably, producing a $20 million investment into infrastructure enhancements, including security upgrades and various modernization projects. As a result of Ross’s efforts, ASU’s national standing among HBCUs has been elevated and their accreditation with the SACSCOC has been extended through 2030.

As Ross stated in the press release, “I look forward to serving the membership on the NCAA Division I Finance Committee,” Dr. Ross said. “This committee is a vital component of the overall NCAA financial structure and I’m extremely honored to serve the NCAA membership in this capacity.”

Ross also told The New Pittsburgh Courier that he looks forward to enhancing the experience of NCAA student-athletes through his work on the board.

“I’m extremely honored to serve on this board. The NCAA Division I Board of Directors is an essential and critical component of the NCAA governance structure, and its positive impact on the world of intercollegiate athletics can be seen daily. I look forward to working with the members of this board to implement programs and initiatives that will enhance the overall student-athlete experience in all facets.”

Hill Harper Opens Up About The Pros, Cons Of AI Technology During U.S. Senate Campaign

Hill Harper Opens Up About The Pros, Cons Of AI Technology During U.S. Senate Campaign

Beware of the dangers of AI....

Actor Hill Harper opened up about how using artificial intelligence (AI) technology is both helping and hurting his campaign efforts for the U.S. Senate, AfroTech reports.

Harper’s campaign has pushed advocacy on heavy issues affecting the state of Michigan, including ensuring affordable and universal healthcare, protecting reproductive rights, addressing the climate crisis, providing affordable housing, and increasing public safety with reasonable gun laws.

However, he is concerned with how social media’s algorithm and AI can hinder his reach, especially regarding certain policies. “I’ve attempted to use social media to engage with voters and the community to let them know and have an insight into what my platform is, who I’m engaging with, and what I’m actually learning from the voters,” Harper said.

“It’s been incredible, and I’ve been so happy to have that input level. The biggest challenge for me, quite frankly, has been that since I called for a ceasefire [in the Gaza war], the algorithm has participated in shadow banning, and that is shameful.”

In November 2023, Harper admitted that he rejected a $20 million donation offer from businessman Linden Nelson, who has ties to the influential pro-Israel lobbying organization American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). He was asked to mount a primary challenge against Rep. Rashida Tlaib and end his Senate bid. Instead, the former CSI: NY actor changed his slogan to state he will not be “bossed, bullied, or bought” to raise campaign funds.

Harper used AI and technology to appeal to the state’s younger voters and expound on his policy insight. He even collaborated with rapper GMAC CASH with a catchy campaign anthem featuring supporters and listing some of the things he will do for the state. However, he remains cautious of how technological advancements will impact voters’ points of view within campaigns. “There’s a true danger to misinformation, but we’ve seen it in many ways before with bots and dark money. I believe the best way to solve the problem is to end Citizens United and stop allowing dark money in politics,” he said.

“Just like any technology, it [AI] has the potential to be beneficial in terms of access to information, efficiency, and the ability to create. There are dangers of manipulation, which is why I believe education must always take priority.”

Hopefully, Harper will be able to continue educating others on the pros and cons of AI, as according to The Hill, Harper lost his primary election race to replace retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow to Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D). After receiving the support of former Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-Mich.) and comedian Dave Chappelle and hoping to be the first Black state senator in Michigan and the first Black American Democratic U.S. Senate candidate on a ballot in close to 30 years, he lost by 23.7% to Slotkin’s 76.3%

Young Thug’s Attorney Files Motion Against Prosecution Lawyers In RICO Case

In addition to filing the motion, Steel also spoke at length to the court about his difficulty working with the lawyers representing the prosecution.

In yet another attempt to have state prosecution lawyers removed from the sprawling RICO case against Jeffrey Williams, professionally known as recording artist Young Thug, his attorney, Brian Steel, filed an additional motion describing the “horror” of working with Chief Deputy District Attorney Adriane Love and Deputy District Attorney Symone Hylton on Aug. 6.

According to Fox 5, Steel requested the court to review a 2013 case involving the Ford Motor Co. that the pair also prosecuted. Steel claims that in that case, Love and Hylton allegedly made numerous frivolous motions, false statements, and other serious violations. In addition to filing the motion, Steel also spoke at length to the court about his difficulty working with the lawyers representing the prosecution.

According to the motion, which repeatedly attempts to establish the innocence of Williams, “The honorable court denied Mr. Williams’ original Motion to Disqualify Lawyers Love and Hylton on August 1, 2024, based on Mr. Williams’ assertion that he intends to call lawyers Love and Hylton as witnesses at trial.”

The motion continued, “Mr. Williams respectfully requests this honorable court to consider the ethical violations made by lawyers Love and Hylton in support of the motion to disqualify. See Ford Motor Co. v. Young.”

In that case, Steel argues that the states’ attorneys engaged in “constant misconduct,” including Love repeatedly filing a motion stating that the defense was obligated to provide work product despite knowing that this alleged requirement was untrue.

According to Steel, Love was allegedly involved in several ethical violations, including violating court orders, making false statements to the court, misrepresenting evidence, making false accusations of witness tampering against the defense, and at least one instance of a Brady violation during that trial.

Steel concluded the motion, stating, “The above does not truly encapsulate the horror of working with lawyer Love and lawyer Hylton. Not to be able to trust the prosecution to provide the simplest and most basic fundamental fairness such as honesty to the tribunal and honesty to all in the Courtroom must mandate that both lawyers Love and Hylton be disqualified from the case.“

Georgia Aquarium

Georgia Aquarium’s Influential CEO And President, Dr. Brian Davis Dies

'He was a dynamic thinker and always pushed the boundaries of what we could achieve, making Georgia Aquarium an extraordinary place.'

Georgia Aquarium, a fixture in downtown Atlanta, will have limited operations as it mourns the loss of its president and CEO, Dr. Brian Davis.

Davis started with the aquarium as the director of education in 2003 and one of its first employees. He became executive vice president in 2018 before taking over as president two years later.

“It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our leader, friend, and mentor, president and CEO, Dr. Brian Davis,” the museum said in a statement. “Brian was an exceptionally talented and intelligent individual who left a tremendous imprint on the education and zoological fields. Furthermore, he was a beautifully compassionate human being who lifted others up and dedicated himself to creating a caring and diverse space at the Aquarium.

“He was a dynamic thinker and always pushed the boundaries of what we could achieve, making Georgia Aquarium an extraordinary place. He was one of the first employees at the aquarium prior to opening in 2005 and led us through years of innovation and growth. Brian’s indelible imprint made all those he knew better—we are better because of Brian.”

The cause of death was not immediately known, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Davis earned a bachelor’s of science in environmental science from Rutgers University in 1992. He then earned his master’s degree in secondary science education and a Ph.D. in secondary education and teaching, both at Georgia State University.

Davis’ career blended a passion for education and marine life. Moreover, his status as a Black CEO made him a beacon for diversity. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 5.9% of all chief executives in the U.S. identified as Black in 2023.

Before his long, influential stay at the world renowned Georgia Aquarium, Davis held leadership roles at other marine research centers, as well as Zoo Atlanta.
