Liberia’s President To Speak At 124th National Black Business Conference

President Boakai’s address is expected to discuss the benefits of private sector investment between Black American businesses and the Liberian economy.

In a press release, the National Alliance for Black Business (NABB) announced that Liberia’s President Joseph Nyumah Boakai will deliver the keynote address at the 124th National Black Business Conference (NBBC) on August 23, 2024.

According to The National Business League, President Boakai’s address is expected to discuss the benefits of private sector investment between Black American businesses and the Liberian economy. The NBBC is hosted by the cofounders of the NABB, The National Business League, The National Black Chamber of Commerce, and the World Conference of Mayors.

Dr. Ken Harris, the president and CEO of The National Business League, said in a statement that the group is honored to welcome President Boakai. “We are honored to welcome President Boakai as our keynote speaker,” Harris said.

“His insights and leadership will significantly contribute to the success of our summit, fostering deeper connections and economic opportunities between Black American businesses and Liberia.”

According to the press release, the gathering hopes to continue the work that Booker T. Washington began when he founded The National Business League in 1900. Washington was a proponent of supporting Liberian sovereignty and trade by promoting trade, investment, and entrepreneurial development. In keeping with Washington’s spirit, the conference wants to modernize and strengthen the bonds between the Black American and Liberian African communities.

In addition to President Boakai’s address, the World Conference of Mayors has issued a call for all United States presidential candidates to join them at the conference, with the caveat that they should provide policies that will be used to support Black businesses.

According to their release, “NABB earnestly invites all U.S. presidential candidates to join us at the 124th National Black Business Conference and share their economic platforms and agendas during dedicated sessions. We encourage candidates to address topics such as access to capital, government contracting opportunities, policies that promote equitable economic growth, and strategies to overcome systemic barriers affecting Black entrepreneurs. It is crucial to provide policies that will help BBEs build capacity, scope, and scale while expanding bi/tri-lateral trade among Black American BBEs throughout the Pan-African Diaspora, particularly in Africa and the Caribbean.”

According to Charles H. DeBow III, the president and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, “Highlighting and providing their economic platform and agenda to support Black-owned businesses over the next four years is crucial for each presidential candidate. This engagement can drive meaningful change and demonstrate their commitment to the economic empowerment of Black entrepreneurs.”

In the release, Johnny Ford, the founder and president of The World Conference of Mayors, described the invitation extended to the nation’s leaders to address Black business owners at the event as a call to action for those leaders to meaningfully engage with Black businesses.

“This conference is not just an event; it is a call to action for the nation’s leaders to engage with the Black business community in a meaningful way. The policies and agendas presented here will shape the future of Black entrepreneurship and economic development across the United States and beyond.”

Elon Musk, J.K. Rowling Accused Of Aggravated Cyberbullying In New Lawsuit Filed By Female Algerian Boxer

J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk are both named in a cyberbullying lawsuit filed by Algerian boxer Imane Khelif.

J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk could be in big trouble for being among the swarms of people who shared or reposted transphobia-riddled social media posts attacking Algerian boxer and Olympic medalist Imane Khelif.

While Khelif managed to leave the 2024 Paris Olympics with a gold medal, her performance was clouded by global backlash from many who disputed her gender eligibility. Despite being born female and not identifying as transgender or intersex — in addition to official backing by the International Olympic Committee, who released a statement confirming “scientifically, this is not a man fighting a woman” — Khelif was subjected to a wave of accusations and abuse regarding her gender throughout the games.

Now, as a response, Khelif has filed a criminal complaint to French authorities over alleged “acts of aggravated cyber harassment,” which mentions Rowling and Musk, Variety reports. The lawsuit was posted to the anti-online hatred center of the Paris Prosecutor’s Office on Friday, Aug. 9, which prompted an investigation.

“On Aug. 13, (The National Center for the Fight Against Online Hatred) contacted the OCLCH (Central Office for the Fight Against Crimes Against Humanity and Hate Crimes) to conduct an investigation into the counts of cyber harassment due to gender, public insult because of gender, public incitement to discrimination and public insult because of origin,” a statement from the Paris Prosecutor’s Office (National Center for the Fight Against Online Hatred) states.

The suit was filed against “X,” which under French law means that unknown persons are the defendants. That “ensure[s] that the ‘prosecution has all the latitude to be able to investigate against all people” that might be guilty of writing hateful social media messages as themselves or even under pseudonyms.

“J. K. Rowling and Elon Musk are named in the lawsuit, among others,” Khelief’s Paris-based attorney Nabil Boudi said. Donald Trump is also part of the investigation. “Trump tweeted, so whether or not he is named in our lawsuit, he will inevitably be looked into as part of the prosecution.”

Rowling allegedly posted a picture from Khelif’s fight with Italian boxer Angela Carini, where she accused Khelif of being a man who was “enjoying the distress of a woman he’s just punched in the head.” Musk responded to a post from swimmer Riley Gaines that claimed, “Men don’t belong in women’s sports.” Which the X owner co-signed by writing “Absolutely.” Trump also joined the backlash by sharing a picture from Khelif’s fight with Carina and writing, “I will keep men out of women’s sports!”

Logan Paul also allegedly attacked Khelif on social media following her win against Carini in a tweet where he claimed the victory was “the purest form of evil unfolding right before our eyes. A man was allowed to beat up a woman on a global stage, crushing her life’s dream while fighting for her deceased father. This delusion must end.” He went on to delete the post and admit that he “might be guilty of spreading misinformation.”

“What we’re asking is that the prosecution investigates not only these people but whoever it feels necessary. If the case goes to court, they will stand trial,” Boudi says.

Khelif’s coach, Pedro Diaz, says the cyberbullying during the Paris Olympics “incredibly affected her” and “everyone around her.”

“The first time she fought in the Olympics, there was this crazy storm outside of the ring,” Diaz said. He started training with Khelif in February 2023 and claims to have “never seen anything so disgusting in my life.” He asked Khelif to stay off social media during the games so she “wouldn’t lose her focus on winning the gold medal.”

“She’s so smart and has such an amazing motivation,” he said, adding that her gold medal win “felt like the most rewarding victory of my career as a coach.”

New Documentary Will Celebrate The Life And Work Of Author Valerie Boyd

New Documentary Will Celebrate The Life And Work Of Author Valerie Boyd

Your legacy lives on, Ms. Boyd....

A new documentary will soon premiere, celebrating the life of late writer Valerie Boyd and her successful contributions as an educator, journalist, and researcher.

The film “Zora Head: The Life and Scholarship of Valerie Boyd” delves into Boyd’s life and work, particularly surrounding her focus on Black women writers. Before passing away in February 2022, the author wrote the award-winning biography, “Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston,” and worked as the editor for “Gathering Blossoms Under Fire: The Journals of Alice Walker.” Her passion resulted in her spending a generous amount of time researching the archives of Walker, who wrote The Color Purple in 1982, at the Rare Book Library at Emory in Atlanta and the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript Archives. Boyd also published Bigger Than Bravery: Black Resilience and Reclamation in a Time of Pandemic, an award-winning anthology that revisits the Coronavirus crisis, centers African American experiences during that time and includes a touching essay by Ida Harris, BLACK ENTERPRISE’s very own director of digital content.

The film is directed by Clinton Fluker, who, along with his team, wants viewers to experience how significant Boyd’s contributions were on different levels outside of academia. Boyd achieved milestones in both her personal and spiritual life. “I hope people recognize the dedication to sharing Black women’s stories, the keen sense of self and self-worth, and the quest for freedom at the heart of Valerie’s work,” Fluker says.

“What was striking to me while making the film was that Valerie had a strong network of Black women who loved and supported her as she loved and supported them. Creating these communities is so important, and I hope our film captures that.”

Other profound Black women are featured in the film, including retired Spelman College dance professor Veta Goler, journalist Rosalind Bentley, Emory’s Rose Library interim co-Director Gabrielle Dudley, and Walker. All the women spoke on Boyd’s powerful voice and how she impacted their work and lives.

According to Dudley, a collection of Boyd’s papers can be found in the Rose Library, which holds a “wealth of resources,” including interviews with some of Black literature’s greatest writers, such as Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou. The research from her Zora Neale Hurston biography is also featured. “Professor Boyd was a bridge who learned from generations of Black writers before her and helped to mentor, support, and sponsor a generation of writers following her,” Dudley said.

“Her papers in Rose Library have immense research value as they not only document her life and career as a journalist, essayist, and educator but also give glimpses into the lives of the literary and cultural giants in her circle.”

Her life continues to be celebrated over two years after her passing. According to Rough Draft Atlanta, Boyd will be inducted as a 2024 Atlanta Press Club Hall of Fame member on Oct. 28 at the InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta. Other inductees include former professional boxer Tony Light. The 20-minute documentary is set to debut during the 2024 Bronze Lens Film Festival between Aug. 21 and 25 at the Tara Atlanta Theater.

Young Buck To Repay 50 Cent $250K After Selling Assets

After the liquidation of Young Buck's assets, the bankruptcy trustee was able to obtain $1,023,669.67. With that sum, he can pay 50 and also pay back the child support arrears and the $190,000 debt he owed the IRS

50 Cent claimed another victory recently when it was reported that his former G-Unit cohort, Young Buck, had repaid the money owed to the “Power” executive.

According to AllHipHop, Young Buck, who 50 Cent stated owed him $250,000 after not fulfilling the terms of his contract with G-Unit Records, has settled that debt. Young Buck sold his music catalog to satisfy several debts he owed, including child support and the IRS. Along with selling his music, he had to sell his collection of luxury cars, jewelry, and other items to get out of bankruptcy.

After liquidating Young Buck’s assets, the bankruptcy trustee obtained $1,023,669.67. With that sum, the Nashville-bred rapper cannot only pay off 50 but also pay back the child support arrears and the $190,000 debt he owed to the Internal Revenue Service.

The U.S. Trustee, Region 8, requested the dismissal of the $250,000 lawsuit 50 filed against Young Buck.

50 Cent posted a social media post demanding his money “by Monday.”

“🤨🤷🏾‍♂️I don’t know why they make me go through this part, but I’m a need that money by Monday. 😆@bransoncognac @lecheminduroi

Young Buck initially filed for bankruptcy protection in May 2020. 50 Cent filed to get the money he stated he was owed. Young Buck claimed the money 50 wanted was an advance payment against future albums, while the “Get Rich or Die Trying” rapper said it was a loan to help him while he was in financial trouble.

Attorneys for 50 tried to block the bankruptcy proceedings because they wanted Young Buck to settle the debt and fulfill his G-Unit recording contract. Yet, attorneys for Young Buck argued against it because they claimed he wasn’t obligated to repay any funds. After all, they labeled it an advance, while 50 stated it was a loan.

Young Buck took to his Instagram account to state that he is now a free agent.

Ilhan Omar Wins Primary Amid Defeat Of 2 Fellow ‘Squad’ Members

Omar won the Minnesota primary following the unsuccessful races of fellow "Squad" members Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush.

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, an original member of the “Squad,” has won the congressional primary for Minnesota’s 5th District and will move on in the November election as the Democratic candidate.

Omar, one of the first Muslim women in Congress, reigned victorious with over 67,000 votes after overcoming three other challengers in the primary contest, a race BBC News reported was closely watched amid the defeat of two different “Squad” members this summer. After tallying 99% of the votes, Omar, who received 56%, defeated former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, who came in second with just under 43%. On Tuesday, the congresswoman asserted her fight for healthcare, housing, world peace, and equity to supporters. “We run the politics of joy,” Omar said.

Omar’s campaign has seen support from Senator Bernie Sanders and Vice President Kamala Harris. According to NBC News, following a close race with Samuels in 2022, her campaign spending skyrocketed from $71,000 in the previous race to over $6 million for 2024. In a campaign ad this year, the Somali-born American politician thanked the Minnesota community for welcoming her as a refugee and stated her commitment to representing the youth and delivering food security. Her campaign has also highlighted her support for abortion rights.

“I think having new voices at the table means new problems will get addressed,” Omar told Bloomberg ahead of her primary win. In 2020, BLACK ENTERPRISE covered Omar’s call to dismantle the economic and political systems in the U.S., which she described as “systems of oppression.”

The congresswoman’s victory follows the defeats of two fellow “Squad” members, Reps. Jamaal Bowman of New York and Cori Bush of Missouri, whose primaries focused on the Democratic Party’s division over the war in Gaza. Omar, who BE noted is an original member of the group of progressive Democrats, dodged slander ads during her race from groups like United Democracy Project. Reportedly, the super-PAC controlled by the pro-Israel group, American Israel Public Affairs Committee, invested millions in the defeat against Bowman and Bush but steered clear of Omar’s primary race.

Janet Jackson Reveals Family Ties To Stevie Wonder, Tracy Chapman, And Samuel L. Jackson

There's a reason why Michael and Janet Jackson share the same last name with Samuel L. Jackson.

The talent within the Jackson family runs even deeper than expected now that Janet Jackson has revealed the surprising connections to her family tree.

The music icon appeared on BBC Sounds, where she opened up to Scott Mills about the famous faces within the Jackson family who aren’t her brothers. After Mills asked the “Rhythm Nation” hitmaker if she was related to fellow music legend Stevie Wonder, she let the cat out of the bag.

“He’s our cousin,” Jackson admitted to a surprised Mills. “Not a lot of people know that. He’s our cousin on my mother’s side.”

But Jackson wasn’t done. She revealed two more talents within music and film with whom she shares family ties.

“So is Tracy Chapman. So is Samuel L. Jackson,” she added.

Mills was completely taken aback as Jackson confirmed her relation to the “Pulp Fiction” star as another cousin. It’s the first time anyone in the Jackson family has been so forthcoming about their family tree.

The superstar family has always been known to consist of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, and his nine siblings, Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Brandon, Randy, and Janet. While Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder often collaborated in the studio, they managed to remain mum about being third cousins on Katherine Jackson’s side of the family.

Stevie and MJ enjoyed working together on music and have many songs together, including two 1987 duets, “Just Good Friends” from Michael’s “Bad” album and “Get It” from Stevie’s “Characters” album. Jackson’s cousin, Tracy Chapman, has been enjoying a revival of her music career after Luke Combs’ country music cover of her 1988 hit single “Fast Car” reached No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart last year. The cover made Chapman the first Black woman to top the chart since the chart’s inception in 1990.

As for Samuel L. Jackson, his decorated film career spans 40 years, with credits in cult classics like “Captain Marvel,” “Shaft,” “The Incredibles,” and many more. Despite being known for his loud demeanor on film, Jackson managed to keep quiet about why he shares the same last name with the King of Pop.

A Solemn Victory: Grand Jury Indicts Officer Accused Of Killing Pregnant 21-Year-Old Ta’Kiya Young

Grubb was indicted on murder charges and Young's family says it's a small step for justice and wants the officer sentenced for life.

A grand jury has indicted Blendon Township Police Officer Connor Grubb on murder charges for the fatal shooting of Ta’Kiya Young, an unarmed Black woman he confronted in the parking lot of a Kroger grocery store in August 2023.

NBC News reported that Grubb has been indicted on four counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, and two counts of involuntary manslaughter. Legal representatives for Young’s family described the indictment as a “solemn victory in the pursuit of justice” for the mother, who was pregnant with a daughter. “The grand jury’s decision, fortunately, reflects the community’s collective conscience, recognizing this tragedy for what it truly is — a murder that demands empathy and justice,” the law firm stated.

As previously mentioned by BLACK ENTERPRISE, video footage of the Aug. 24 shooting revealed the moment Ta’Kiya Young was shot and killed inside her vehicle by the Columbus law enforcement officer, an incident that escalated after police responded to suspicion that the mother stole from the store. The woman was approached by Grubb and a second officer in the parking lot before she was ordered to exit her Lexus. According to NBC News, one officer allegedly banged and grabbed onto her car window. With his gun already pointed toward her, Grubb shot through the windshield as she attempted to drive away.

BE noted that additional footage was released in September 2023 by the Blendon Township (Ohio) Police Department, which showed the woman inside Kroger allegedly stuffing bottles of alcohol into her purse and setting off alarms after standing in line for a moment.

During a news briefing on Tuesday, Nadine Young, the victim’s 61-year-old grandmother, shared that she has been left to care for the woman’s three- and six-year-old sons. She noted that the baby with whom her granddaughter was pregnant, would have been born in November. “It’s been, for me, agony,” Nadine said. “It’s been like a whirlwind of just hurt and pain.”

Young’s family attorney, Sean Walton, said the confrontation spiraled due to Grubb’s actions and failure to properly de-escalate the situation. “…That’s why Ta’Kiya was murdered,” he said.

Walton suggested Grubb be terminated immediately, and Nadine, who called Grubb a “bully with a badge,” said she wants the officer sentenced to prison for life.

Family Of Ajike ‘AJ’ Owens Hopes For Justice As Trial For Accused Shooter Susan Lorincz Begins With All-White Jury

Attorneys for Owens' family are "disappointed" in the selection of an all-white jury to determine the outcome of Lorincz's trial.

Opening statements before an all-white jury on Aug. 13 began a trial for the accused shooter of Black Florida mother Ajike “AJ” Owens, who was allegedly killed in front of her son by her white neighbor Susan Lorincz after a dispute about her children on June 2, 2023.

According to ABC News, assistant State Attorney Adam Smith told jurors on Tuesday that the 59-year-old woman shot at the unarmed Black mother through her locked front door after she went to confront the woman about her interaction with her children, who were playing near her residence. As previously covered by BLACK ENTERPRISE, Lorincz was charged last year with multiple charges, including first-degree felony manslaughter, after she admitted to killing the mother of four who lived across the street from her apartment complex in Ocala.

“It was either Susan or AJ,” public defender Morris Carranza stated in his opening remarks for the trial, arguing that Lorincz “felt she had no choice” and “chose to defend herself.” Carranza further claimed Owens threatened to “kill” Lorincz and attempted to “break down” her door. However, Smith disputed the claim and told jurors that witnesses of the confrontation would also deny the alleged actions of Owens. “After the evidence is presented, we’re going to come back to you and ask that you find the defendant guilty,” Smith said.

Although family attorneys Anthony Thomas and Ben Crump oppose the selection of an all-white jury to determine the final outcome, Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, said, “I am keeping faith that justice will be served for my daughter, Ajike, that the jurors will not let Susan Lorincz get away with this.” BE noted in 2023 that the family asserted their desires for Lorincz’s actions to be considered a hate crime and for her manslaughter charge to be upgraded to murder. According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Lorincz faces up to a 30-year prison sentence if convicted, a number Dias stated is “not sufficient because this is a lifetime of trauma that these children are going to have to deal with.”

This week, two of Owens’ four children, Isaac, 13, and Israel, 10, will be called to testify. “They understand the gravity of this moment and want to ensure that their mother’s death is not in vain,” Thomas said.

According to presiding judge Robert W. Hodges of the Florida 5th Judicial Circuit, the trial is expected to close by Friday.

Here’s How To Protect Yourself If Your Social Security Number Was Leaked In Data Breach

Here’s How To Protect Yourself If Your Social Security Number Was Leaked In Data Breach

Learn how to protect yourself!

Personal information, including Social Security numbers, of millions of Americans have reportedly been sold by hackers to an online marketplace for stolen personal data, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Experts say the massive breach could start a domino effect of identity theft, fraud, and other crimes. “If this, in fact, is pretty much the whole dossier on all of us, it certainly is much more concerning” than prior breaches,” consumer watchdog Director for the U.S. Public Information Research Group, Teresa Murray, said.

“And if people weren’t taking precautions in the past, which they should have been doing, this should be a five-alarm wake-up call for them.”

A class action lawsuit was filed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, claiming the hacking group, known as USDoD, stole more than 2.9 million Social Security numbers and other personal records from people in April 2024. All the information was listed in the National Public Data, a database that offers personal information to employers, private investigators, staffing agencies, and others engaging in background checks. The records from persons from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom were then sold for $3.5 million, according to a cybersecurity expert who made the announcement on X.

According to Futurism, a background check company named Jerico Pictures has already been sued. After being accused of hosting its business with the National Public Data, the suit alleges it failed to protect all the data.

The leak reportedly hosts information banks, insurance companies, and service providers ask for when people create accounts. However, some viable information, including email addresses, driver’s license numbers, or passport photos, is seemingly missing from the hackers’ haul.

However, Murray warns that it won’t stop information from being used. Even with names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and mailing addresses, a hacker could still create fake accounts in your name to talk someone into resetting the password for existing accounts. “For somebody who’s really suave at it, the possibilities are really endless,” Murray said.

Experts claim loads of sensitive information are hidden in the corners of the dark web. The website that rates virtual private network services, VPNRanks, estimates close to five million people a day access the dark web through the TOR browser, which could be used for malignant purposes.

There are ways to protect yourself against hackers if you feel your information has been leaked. Experts propose putting a freeze on your credit files at the three major credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion, for free. Freezing accounts and files will block criminals from taking out loans in your name, signing up for credit cards, or opening bank accounts. Experts also advise you to remember to lift the freeze temporarily if you are applying for or obtaining something with credit check requirements.

You can also sign up for services that monitor your accounts and the dark web to protect you against identity theft. However, the services typically require a fee. However, if data is exposed, the company whose network was breached will often provide the service free of charge for a year or more.

National Black Caucus Of The International Brotherhood Of Teamsters Endorses Kamala Harris For President

In a statement, the caucus praised Vice President Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for upholding the rights of American workers.

Although the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has refrained from officially endorsing Kamala Harris for President, the vice president received one from the National Black Caucus of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters instead.

According to Politico, members of the caucus voted unanimously on Aug. 13 to endorse Vice President Harris, and that move carries some risk inside of an organization that has historically been prone to retaliation.

In a statement, the caucus praised Vice President Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, for upholding the rights of American workers.

“Their records reflect a deep dedication to advancing labor rights and supporting working-class Americans,” the caucus said. “As a key partner in leading the most pro-labor administration in our lifetimes, Vice President Harris has proven to be a tough and principled fighter for workers’ rights and a leader who delivers on her promises.”

According to The New York Times, the endorsement from the Black Caucus of the Teamsters indicates an ideological split from the Teamsters president, Sean O’Brien, who requested to speak at both the Democratic and Republican Party National Conventions. O’Brien has also signaled that he could be open to endorsing Trump.

James Curbeam, the chairman of the caucus, has previously criticized O’Brien’s willingness to capitulate to Trump and in his own statement, described his belief that endorsing Trump would be a “betrayal” of the group’s values.

“Trump showed us for over 40 years who he really is: someone who is not for us,” Curbeam said. “Endorsing a candidate with his history would be a betrayal of the values that we have fought to uphold.”

However, according to The New Republic, O’Brien may soon be feeling pressure to abandon his neutral stance after Trump embraced union-busting during his interview with Elon Musk on Twitter/X.

O’Brien told Politico on Aug. 13 that “Firing workers for organizing, striking, and exercising their rights as Americans is economic terrorism.”

Although the Teamsters typically wait until after both conversations to endorse a particular candidate, O’Brien indicated to NBC 10 Boston that he has not been extended an invitation to speak at the Democratic convention.

The Democratic National Convention, however, told Politico that it expects to include the voices of labor and union leaders to help tell the story of the Harris/Walz campaign.

Matt Hill, the Senior Director of Communications for the DNC, told Politico, “We are building a convention in Chicago that will tell our story to the American people, including the stories of labor and union leaders and workers across America supporting the Harris-Walz ticket and their pro-union record and vision.”
