Give Grace To Pragmatic Black Voters Who Must Navigate Between Joy And Fear This Election

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has created a division within certain segments of the Black community.

By Ernest Owens

One of the first life lessons I learned as a journalist was that I could never properly inform the communities I cared about if I couldn’t offer them the proper nuance, context, and grace to help them. Being Black and progressively educated, there have been things I’ve learned over the years that shaped my societal view that contrasts with those within my community who haven’t had similar access. In such moments, it can be frustrating to hear and witness certain remarks, comments, and decisions from said individuals because while I might personally know better-–some have yet to do better.

As a Black queer millennial living in America, I’ve had to watch a society evolve much slower than I would personally like. But if I am to be a part of that change, it requires me to understand why the world I live in is the way it currently is–-and strive to effectively and compassionately shape it to be better.

In other words, I can either be self-righteous in my knowledge of the world and cut people off or be a resourceful, mindful, and compassionate person seeking change for the better.

In 2024, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has created a division within certain segments of the Black community on how to show up during this election–-a matter that has unfortunately led to misplaced anger, unfair responsibility, and disproportional labor on Black voters.

It seems as though in every election, Black voters are expected to sacrifice personal moments of joy, enthusiasm, and optimism for a problem that was neither started nor can be resolved solely by them. In 2016, Black voters were told that Hillary Clinton shouldn’t be elected because of her tough-on-crime stances in the 1990s –- even though Donald Trump’s victory proved to be worse for us in the end. Now, there’s a movement led by the likes of Dr. Cornel West and others to encourage Black voters to be “uncommitted” in this crucial election until Democratic Presidential nominee VP Kamala Harris takes more swift action in aiding the Palestinian people.

It’s been hard not to notice that the moment a Black woman had the unique opportunity to run for president, the intensity of this public pressure got heavier on Black voters than previously. Perhaps it’s time for such activists to redirect some of that rage elsewhere and re-communicate better messaging to Black voters who deserve much more grace than what’s being offered.

Let’s be for real: Black voters cannot “afford” to collectively withhold their votes during this election.

As a community that already faced the worst aspects of a Trump administration, his re-election will only put the nation –- and Black people –- in worse conditions. Withholding a vote right now will logically hurt the very Black voters who also want an immediate ceasefire in Gaza AND on the domestic legislative violence that’s currently impacting their daily lives. Not everyone is as connected, resourceful, and prepared to “afford” another Trump presidency.

As a Black voter, I personally hold all of these factors into consideration. I, too, want bombings and killings of innocent lives around the world to end, but I also can’t be intellectually dishonest and suggest that both presidential candidates are primarily the same on this issue. Harris has made it clear she wants an immediate ceasefire, and while there’s criticism on how influential she can be in doing more right now as vice president, Trump has made it clear he doesn’t care about Palestinians at all. For activists shaming Black voters supporting Harris, make it make sense beyond reciting a self-righteous platitude of martyrdom.

For those privileged to be educated on the ideals of revolution, is Trump’s re-election as you continue living in this country the kind of movement you think it is? Sure, no politician is perfect, but to act like not voting right now is bold or revolutionary just ignores the realities that plague the very marginalized people we should all care to serve.

And what is the demand for change without joy? Throughout history, joy has helped uplift us during hard times, and not recognizing the hope millions of Black voters feel right now only makes you out-of-touch, insufferable, and ineffective in creating change. For those who don’t like our current state of politics, you can’t deny the power and promise that a diverse generation of Americans feel right now watching the first Black woman be nominated for president by a major national party. Sure, say what you want about certain policy positions and posturing, but again, it’s a pretty big damn deal and an important moment in history.

So, while some might mock and condemn those navigating these flashes of joy, conflict, fear, and caution, please give grace to Black voters right now who deserve the right to measure how they choose to move politically during this election season. For those who have the influence and power to pick and choose their positions, others need more time to learn, refocus, and unpack these issues more carefully. Shaming and belittling marginalized voters isn’t going to change a damn thing –- it’s just going to reinforce the very systems of voter suppression they already endure.

Translation: Leave Black voters alone right now to freely explore their feelings during the election.

Because whatever the outcome is, we’ll be the ones who will have to figure it out anyway.

Judges Reject Lawsuit Accusing Tennessee Of Racial Discrimination In Political Map Redistricting

The judges said the lawsuit could be refiled.

A Tennessee panel of judges dismissed a lawsuit alleging that the Tennessee Republican Party engaged in unconstitutional racial gerrymandering by redistricting an electoral map, but also argued that the facts of the case are consistent with a politically motivated gerrymander.

According to The Associated Press, in their Aug. 21 ruling, the three judge panel wrote, “In sum, the complaint alleges facts that are consistent with a racial gerrymander. But the facts are also consistent with a political gerrymander.”

The plaintiffs argued that the 2022 congressional maps erased the political power of the Black voters and other communities of color in one of Tennessee’s few Black strongholds. In addition to those maps, they also challenged Tennessee Senate District 31 maps on similar grounds. The lawsuit also argued that the white voting age population went up as a Republican took office in that district.

Plaintiffs in this case included the Tennessee State Conference of the NAACP, the African American Clergy Collective of Tennessee, the Equity Alliance, the League of Women Voters, and a group of Tennessee voters that includes former Democratic State Sen. Brenda Gilmore.

In a bit of good news for the plaintiffs, despite the judges ruling against their argument, they did reject Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti’s argument that the plaintiffs waited too long to pursue their case and said they did not have to create their own map to challenge the district. The judges said they could refile in the next 30 days, but they would have to “plausibly disentangle race from politics.”

Republicans like Tennessee’s House Speaker Cameron Sexton signaled their approval as his office released a statement claiming that they were “happy to have resolution on this matter so that we can focus on what’s ahead for Tennessee.”

However, Tennessee’s state legislative maps still face another lawsuit on the grounds that they constitute a violation of Tennessee’s state constitution.

NAACP Accuses St. Louis Schools Of Civil Rights Violations In Complaint Over Black Students’ Low Reading Scores

The NAACP said Black students in St. Louis schools are in a literary crisis.

Adolphus Pruitt, the president of the St. Louis NAACP branch, said at an Aug. 20 press conference that the schools in the city of St. Louis have created such poor outcomes for its Black students that it prompted him to file a civil rights complaint against the school districts.

According to the St. Louis Dispatch, Pruitt said that the complaint he is filing against the 34 school districts in both St. Louis city and county highlights a literary crisis.

“The St. Louis region is in a literacy crisis,” Pruitt said at the press conference held in his office. “From our analysis, all the districts including charter schools have issues as it relates to reading. I hope that we reach an agreement with districts to set and achieve goals. We cannot let these kids fail. We hope from there that between the U.S. Department of Education, the NAACP, and those individual school districts, we can have some serious conversations about them setting some goals.”

According to CBS Austin, in 2023 activist Chester Asher noted at a St. Louis Public Schools board meeting that the school’s education system was not invested in educating the Black students it was charged with teaching.

“We will not stand here while you engage in faux deliberation or remain silent while you pave the way for incarceration,” Asher told the school board. “You applaud yourselves while allowing our schools to pile black bodies on top of piles of black bodies, because that is the result of an educational system that does not educate.”

Asher continued, “Your sham, citywide plan sheds no light and provides no direction. Our state test scores are a yearly reminder of your dereliction, and the outcomes for our children and communities require your criminal conviction.”

According to data from the government of the City of St. Louis, the city’s education system seems rife with disparities. According to the website, “At key milestones such as third grade for reading and sixth grade for math, Black students are less likely to demonstrate proficiency. The basic skills students fail to learn early on make every additional learning milestone more difficult to achieve.”

The site also corroborates the concerns of the St. Louis NAACP, saying that there are few schools where Black students meet the state requirements for Math and English.

“There are few schools in St. Louis where it is the norm for students to meet state standards for both Math and English. Black children are less likely than white children to be students at these higher performing schools. Black children are also more likely to attend schools where more teachers are chronically absent and schools where more than 30% of teachers are in their first or second year of teaching.”

According to Fox 2, St. Louis parents are also concerned about the lack of attention school districts are paying to the Black students in their care.

“They started playing with my child’s grades—her reading scores specifically. I know my child can read college books as well as other books, and they’re telling me that she’s reading below her grade level. That’s ridiculous,” Anthony Dorsey, a concerned parent told the outlet. “I think it’s about time they paid attention to our children and our communities.”

Although many schools did not provide comment to Fox 2, KIPP Schools issued a statement that sought to support the actions of the NAACP as well as defend the steps they’ve taken for their students’ benefit.

“We share the NAACP’s commitment to improving the literacy skills of Black and Brown students. We have seen our students make impressive learning gains this past year with our new reading curriculum. Our dedicated teachers look forward to building on this positive momentum in the new school year,” KIPP Schools said.

Zoë Kravitz’s Directorial Debut ‘Blink Twice’: A Bold Psychological Thriller Featuring Boyfriend, Channing Tatum

Zoë Kravitz and the cast of "Blink Twice" discuss her directorial debut in the new psychological thriller.

In her directorial debut, Blink Twice, Zoë Kravitz takes audiences on a suspenseful journey filled with twists, turns, and the unexpected. As the film hits theaters, the cast shared their thoughts with BLACK ENTERPRISE on the experience, revealing how Kravitz’s unique approach shaped the psychological thriller and its subtle themes of women supporting women.

The film stars her boyfriend, Channing Tatum, who plays tech billionaire Slater King. King meets a cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) and invites her on a dream vacation to his private island where things go completely left. Frida will have to uncover the truth about Slater and his island resort if she wants to make it out alive.

Tatum gushed about Kravitz’s directing debut and how the experience made him more enthralled with her.

“She kills it, man. I’m still truly, I mean, not just because like, you know, I have to, like, I mean, I’m in awe of her every day,” Tatum told BE.

Kravitz returned the praise and shared how natural it was to work with her beau on the project.

“I dug it, you know, I mean I really did,” she said of directing Tatum. “I think that art is our love language and we love talking about film and storytelling and it felt really safe and he supported the shit out of me was like so amazing.”

Ackie commended Kravitz for being “wicked” on set and highlighted the relatable story portrayed on screen.

The film captures Frida’s intense admiration for Slater and her yearning to be near him simply because of his celebrity status — a reflection of today’s social media-driven world, where the vulnerable can easily be manipulated by the powerful elite.

“She wants to get close, as close as she can to say a king, but more wider than that, as close as she can to power, and that desire leaves you open to be manipulated in return,” Ackie explained.

Alia Shawkat plays the role of Frida’s best friend, Jess, who gets invited by Slater to his private island where she disappears. Shawkat explained how the film’s opening theme subtly represented the “gaslighting” celebrities can do on social media.

“I think that opening scene of her is so good. You’re seeing her eyes taking in. You know, we have this idea of what the world looks like when you have a lot of money and you think it’s happiness and the reality is good,” Shawkat explained.

“You see that on Instagram and you look at everybody’s life and the pictures of the post. And you feel like crap about yours. And again, it’s gaslighting. Comparison is the thief of joy. What are we all doing anyway?”

It’s a suspenseful movie packed with unexpected developments, intricate plot twists, and plenty of gore. Not exactly what audiences would expect from Kravitz’s first film as director. But it’s an experience that gave the Mad Max: Fury Road star a new way of looking at the concept of art.

“I feel like the biggest lesson I learned is that art is its own living entity,” she told BE. “And if you try and tell it what it’s supposed to be that’s when it doesn’t go well. But when you let it show you what it wants to be, it’s a pretty amazing experience.”

Press play below for the full interviews with Kravitz, Tatum, Ackie, Shawkat, Christian Slater, and Simon Rex, and be sure to check out Blink Twice, which hit theaters on Aug. 23.

‘We Needed This Forever’: Black Business Hub Launches In Wisconsin

The space will provide financial and mentorship resources for its participating businesses.

A new Black Business Hub has officially opened in Madison, Wisconsin. The establishment will encourage community members to support its local Black entrepreneurs.

The hub celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 24, per WKOW. Local leaders attended the ceremony that coincided with the 10th annual Unity Picnic. However, the hub seeks to do more than provide a space for entrepreneurs to show off their businesses.

According to the news outlet, 20 of the 90 spots have filled thus far. As they grow the hub, the CEO of Urban League of Greater Madison, Ruben Anthony, says the initiative has been a “missing piece in the region.”

“We needed this forever,” he shared at the event. “There are 10,000 businesses in Dane County that have more than only one employee. Only four-tenths of a percent of those businesses are Black-owned businesses. We believe here at the Black Business Hub that we are going to change those numbers.”

The hub will offer financial and mentorship services for the diverse business owners, while hoping the space scales their businesses. Black and other owners of color can take part in the new establishment, expanding their reach through community support.

Anthony added, “We think this is going to be an economic development project that’s going to give to this community for multiple generations to come. I’m excited about the possibilities. I’m excited that we’re at this moment.”

On a national scale, over 3.5 million Black-owned businesses operated in 2019, as reported by the Center of Advocacy. Furthermore, with total sales equal to $217.3 billion, Black businesses hold their own impact on the U.S. economy.

The Wisconsin State Journal detailed how the hub came into fruition raising $25.5 million for the project. Taking two years to construct, it also includes event spaces, classrooms, and a large kitchen space for the entrepreneur to try and grow their skills.

The hub also made sure to pay tribute to those who came before, featuring a wall honoring Tusla, Oklahoma’s Greenwood district. The famed district hosted its own “Black Wall Street” until a 1921 massacre by a white mob destroyed most of the area.

To remedy the past, emerging businesses, from Madison’s first Black-owned beauty school to a podcasting studio, now call the hub their home, and the place where their dreams are just getting started.

Jordin Sparks Hits High Note With Goodwill: A Thrifty Family Tradition Promoting Sustainability And Second Chances

Sparks get candid about her sustainability journey in an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE.

Jordin Sparks is on a mission to make the world a better place through a partnership with Goodwill.

The R&B songstress has always had an affinity for thrifting; it’s a childhood pastime she now gets to share with her son. For her, it’s not just about finding cool clothes for the low, but the bigger mission is to help others in need while also committing to sustainability to ensure that our planet gets the love and attention it needs.

“My mom used to take me when I was younger,” Sparks recalled during an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE. “Then, the other thing that she and my dad used to teach us was like, for example, if it was our birthday or it was Christmas, it was like, if you’re going to have more stuff coming in, we need to make sure that we gather our stuff and donate it, because other people will be able to reuse it and different things like that, so I’ve always kind of had that in the back of my mind.”

“Goodwill has just been so amazing. I’ve moved a lot in my life, and every time I have to purge or organize, Goodwill is always where I drop it off. They’ve just been so convenient and easy, but with the company, it’s amazing to see and be a part of something where they actually say what they mean and mean what they say. They walk the walk, essentially, and so when they called and said, ‘Hey, we would love for you to be a part of this new initiative that we’re launching,’ it seemed very serendipitous and in alignment with who I am.”

Through its New Lives Campaign, the nonprofit organization is revealing that it is much more than a place to find unique goods. It gives the community a firsthand glimpse into how every donation, big or small, helps create job opportunities for individuals who face challenges as they seek employment to support themselves and their families.

“The Goodwill down the street from you isn’t just a convenient place to donate things you no longer use. Any donation you make can help fund life-changing programs that serve people who have faced hardships,” said Onney Crawley, chief marketing officer of Goodwill Industries International. “Our New Lives campaign tells the story of how revenue from donation sales goes to job training, career navigation, and many other support services like childcare and transportation—all provided in the very same community where the item was donated and at no cost to those who need it.”

Crawley adds, “We are honored to have Jordin Sparks shed light on Goodwill’s important mission and uplift some of the amazing individuals that Goodwill has helped. As a brilliant storyteller herself, she understands the importance of listening to people’s raw and real stories in order to challenge our own biases and be a part of the change needed to build a world where everyone has opportunity.”

Sparks loves how the nonprofit organization champions the power of second chances, not just for donated items that will take on a new life once they arrive at their new respective owners but also for people who are simply on the path to success, seeking a better life. For her, this is a chance to instill the same values into her son, DJ, that her parents instilled in her at an early age.

“I remember doing that with my mom,” said the “No Air” crooner of thrifting and donating to local Goodwill stores throughout her childhood. “It’s just really cosmic to look at my son and be like, ‘Hey if you’re going to have birthday presents coming in, we need to make sure that we take this stuff and donate it. So I had that moment with him the past couple of Christmases because I only have one, he’s my only [child], and you know, baby boy gets whatever he wants, essentially, but within reason.”

“Being able to look at him and go, ‘Hey, do you think another kid would like this? Do you think that this is something that you would be okay parting ways with?’ And it’s been really beautiful to see him, take that second to think about it, and then go, ‘Yeah, that’s okay, somebody else can use it, another kid can have fun with it.’”

According to Goodwill, in 2023 alone, sales of donated goods helped 1.7 million people. Still, it doesn’t stop there, as the nonprofit organization continues to introduce new employment services to keep up with the ever-evolving world and economy; they have partnered with Accenture and GM to create a workforce training program for in-demand clean energy jobs and expanded its partnership with Google to equip job seekers with essential AI skills.

New Jersey Marker Added To Mississippi Freedom Trail To Highlight Civil Rights Milestones

The NJ marker commemorates the role Atlantic City played in supporting the Mississippi Freedom Party, which made a historic appearance at the 1964 Democratic National Convention held at Jersey's Boardwalk Hall.

New Jersey became the first state outside of Mississippi to get a stop on the Mississippi Freedom Trail on Aug. 20. The Mississippi Freedom Trail is a part of the larger United States Civil Rights Trail and is composed of 30 sites connected to the Civil Rights Movement.

According to the Asbury Park Press, the new marker fits into a commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Freedom Summer movement, a 1964 initiative aimed to increase voter registration among Black citizens in Mississippi. Freedom Summer is just one aspect of the Mississippi Freedom Trail, a historical trail that commemorates significant sites related to the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi.

The trail marker in New Jersey pays homage to the Mississippi Freedom Party and their historic appearance at the 1964 Democratic National Convention, which took place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

New Jersey’s acting Governor Tahesha Way said in a statement that the marker signifies Atlantic City’s role in supporting Freedom Summer activists as they made history.

“Atlantic City is home to several locations that honor the state’s civil rights history, including the Civil Rights Garden and the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey,” Way said. “Today, this new Freedom Trail marker signifies the community’s role in supporting the Freedom Summer activists to ensure equal representation for Black voters, which played a key role in the Civil Rights movement and forever altered the course of U.S. election history.”

In 1964, Fannie Lou Hamer and the Mississippi Freedom Party were refused seats at the Democratic National Convention, but she did make a speech from the floor of the Democratic National Convention, calling for Black people to be allowed to exercise their civic freedom and vote amid racist terrorism.

According to the Mississippi Free Press Hamer was one of the architects of the Freedom Summer initiatives and with her trademark fire, questioned America and who was allowed to be considered a citizen.

“If the Freedom Democratic Party is not seated now, I question America,” Hamer said. “Is this America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, where we have to asleep with our telephones off of the hooks because our lives be threatened daily, because we want to live as decent human beings, in America?”

Angel Reese Scores Another WNBA Record With Back-To-Back 20-Rebound Games

Reese's new stat is strengthening her case to be the WNBA's Rookie of the Year.

Angel Reese continues to make her mark in WNBA history. The Chicago Sky rookie now reigns as the first WNBA player to secure 20 rebounds in back-to-back games.

The 2024 All-Star earned the new record during two performances, the first of the consecutive games being her Aug. 18 game against the Phoenix Mercury. Reese then solidified the record during her Aug. 23 game against the Connecticut Sun, also earning 13 points.

While neither game resulted in a victory for the Chicago Sky, its emerging star player still made history. ESPN noted the new record of 20 rebounds in yet another game.

Moreover, the platform detailed how Reese is also breaking records in the sport regardless of gender. With this new stat, she is the first rookie from the NBA or WNBA to ever gain consecutive 20-rebound games since Shaquille O’Neal’s 1992-93 season.

In another win for Reese, she is the second player to ever bag multiple 20-plus rebound games during her rookie reason. The WNBA confirmed the accomplishment in their own post.

Rebounds are a specialty for the 6-foot-3 forward. Since starting her professional career, her rebound stats have amounted to double digits in the majority of her games, 24 out of 29 to be exact. Currently, she leads the WNBA in rebounds, averaging 12.6 a game.

However, this is not the first record for Reese in her growing WNBA journey. She has accomplished consecutive double-doubles in 15 games, after already setting the record for 10-straight matches.

Reese’s stacked resume makes her a top contender for the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year. While she and her main competition’s, the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark, absence from Team USA’s Olympic Roster caused outrage, Reese continues to prove that she is a force to be reckoned with throughout the league.

As the season nears it end, Reese could stack up more record-breaking stats to further solidify her case as the best rookie this year.

Rapper Scarface, hospitalized, icu

Rapper Scarface Hospitalized For Unknown Medical Condition

The rapper has received well-wishes from fellow artists like Chance The Rapper, Travis Scott, Mannie Fresh, Twista, Krayzie Bone, Ja Rule, and Anthony Hamilton.

Houston rap legend Scarface, born Brad Jordan, revealed that he had been hospitalized via an Aug. 24 Instagram post that showed Jordan in a hospital bed with electrode wires across his chest and a breathing tube in his nose. Jordan captioned the photo “Ouch … Grateful,” adding prayer hands for emphasis.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the rapper and producer appeared to be in an ICU cardiovascular unit, which the outlet gleaned from a badge visible on a nurse who appeared in Jordan’s IG photo.

Although there is no information about what exactly Jordan was hospitalized for, the fact that he is in a cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) establishes that it is most likely an issue with his heart that landed him in the hospital. According to the Chronicle, Jordan was the recipient of a kidney donated by his son Chris in 2021 following complications from contracting COVID-19, which he dealt with for approximately a year and a half before the kidney transplant.

Jordan has received well-wishes from artists like Chance The Rapper, Travis Scott, Mannie Fresh, Twista, Krayzie Bone, Ja Rule, and Anthony Hamilton, as well as celebrities like Cedric The Entertainer, Deon Cole, Affion Crockett, Antonio Tarver, Matt Barnes, and Joe Torry. He has also received well-wishes from his fans, who want to see the Houston rapper back in good health.

According to a 2021 study published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of hospitalization post-transplant as well as a common cause of death post-kidney transplant.

The study points out that cardiovascular risk factors often worsen post-transplant due to the emergence of immunosuppression. One third of those who die after recieving a kidney transplant die of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular disease accounts for 30% of hospitalizations.

The research indicates that it is a reasonable course of action to place kidney transplant recipients on a statin, or cholesterol blocker, unless there is a medication they are taking that could have a major interaction with those medications. They also recommend that a transplant recipient be screened for and treated for post-transplant diabetes and have an individualized immunosuppression medication regiment created. According to the research, there remain more opportunities for research and remaining proactive regarding the risk of cardiovascular disease in kidney transplant recipients can lead to more positive results for that population.

In the meantime, the entertainment world and hip-hop fans everywhere are wishing Scarface a speedy recovery.
