Tips To Help Black Gen Z Grads Score Jobs In Changing Business Landscape

Practical experiences, including internships and freelance work, could help boost Gen Z's job prospects.

Words like “incompetent,” “political,” and “demanding” have been used to describe recent college graduates. As such, many business leaders have fears about hiring Gen Z graduates.

However, as Gen Zers finish college and enter the workforce, graduates may do better not to focus as much on such views. Instead, experts advise they center on preparing for jobs and careers.

In fact, a report from the Economic Policy Institute offers that the job market for young college graduates from 2024 is perhaps stronger now than before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Another analysis showed about 83% of employers expect boosting or maintaining hiring of 2024  graduates.

The bullish projections come as a survey of 1,268 business leaders were asked by higher education website Intelligence.com if they have more worries about the most recent generation of graduates.

According to the survey, 64% of business leaders overall have concerns about hiring recent college grads. Of the 49 Black business leaders polled, 6 in 10 report they have become more concerned in the past five years. Intelligence founded that Gen Z recent grads have “a worse work ethic, are more political, and have fewer practical skills.”

Some 40% of the Black leaders are more worried about hiring recent grads because of the pandemic and pro-Palestine protests. Additionally, 22% of them are less likely to hire a recent  college graduate who took part in pro-Palestine protests.

“There’s always been plenty of debate about hiring new grads due to broad assumptions around lacking soft skills, entitlement, and overall job readiness,” said Huy Nguyen, Intelligent’s chief education and career development advisor. “In recent months, there seems to be a heightened concern about Gen Z becoming far more politically active and vocal with their beliefs in all aspects of their lives including the workplace.”

But perhaps businesses should not move to fast on making hazy assumptions about Gen Z.

“Recent grads need to directly prepare to address misguided stereotypes about their qualifications and mindset through developing their personal brand and demonstrating their experience,” Nguyen says. “Some ways to do this include building a professional LinkedIn profile, resume, and cover letter, highlighting relatable experiences from internships, freelance work, or personal projects.”

He told BLACK ENTERPRISE that while the survey results highlight some concerning biases and broad generational stereotypes that new grads may face, there are several things that Gen Z can do to overcome some of these assumptions and stand out in the job market.

With the business environment rapidly changing with technological advancements, Nguyen says Gen Zers should become knowledgeable in critical areas like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and automation. He says dexterity in those technologies can help job candidates gain an advantage in the hiring process over job seekers without those abilities.

He shared many Black Gen Z grads are already well-equipped with AI savvy and knowledge, something that could help gain favor with potential employers

“I’d encourage Black American Gen Z graduates to recognize that biases exist, but not to become paralyzed by them and focus on developing an adaptable mindset, becoming lifelong learners, and having the confidence to overcome any current or future challenges that might arise in their career journeys.”

Further, Nguyen stressed there are many opportunities for Gen Z grads to gain practical experience, including bootcamps, freelance or gig work, as well as developing their own projects and showcasing their skills online.

“Experience is more than what you write on your resume and today,” Nguyen says. “There are opportunities to demonstrate you have that proficiency and experience even before you land that first job.”

Nicki Minaj Apologizes After Arrest In The Netherlands Forces Her To Miss Concert

The Netherlands military police said they arrested a 41-year-old American woman with “soft drugs” at Schiphol Airport.

Nicki Minaj apologized to her fans after her detainment in Amsterdam forced her to miss a show. After a tour stop in the country, police arrested Minaj and alleged that she had been carrying drugs. Although smoking marijuana recreationally in Amsterdam is accepted, it is illegal to transport it. Minaj recorded and posted a video of her arrest on social media, which spread quickly.

As CBS News reports, one of Minaj’s videos depicted an unnamed man telling the rapper that police wanted to “search all her luggage.”

The man continued, “The police officer told me we have to offload all your luggage and to search everything of your luggage. He (a police officer) doesn’t believe you don’t have more with you than you said.”

The Netherlands military police told CNN they arrested a 41-year-old American woman with “soft drugs” at Schiphol Airport.

In the video, officers told Minaj that she was “under arrest” for “carrying drugs” and asked her to get in a van to be transported to the police station. According to CBS News, Minaj denied the charges and demanded to speak to her lawyer. Minaj is in the middle of her “Pink Friday World Tour 2,” and she was headed from Amsterdam to Manchester, England, to her show at Co-Op Live.

According to The Guardian, there was some miscommunication from the venue about where exactly Minaj was, which led to some fans expressing disappointment with the rapper. Twenty-one-year-old fan Olivia Gibson told the outlet that she believed Minaj let fans down, indicating it is part of a larger pattern for the rapper. “I feel appalled. But also, in a way, I’m not shocked,” Gibson said. “And it’s not the Co-op Live’s fault. She’s just let all her fans down.”

Although Minaj apologized to her fans on social media, she also indicated the detainment was part of some conspiracy against her.

“They succeeded at their plan to not let me get on that stage tonight,” Minaj wrote cryptically. “Please please please accept my deepest & most sincere apologies. They sure did know exactly how to hurt me today but this too, shall pass. They’ve been doing this over & over & over & over & over again & I’ve tried so hard to not discuss it b/c [because] you guys deserve to just get the good stuff. I hate involving you in anything that isn’t for entertainment purposes only.”

Minaj also said that she would be taking legal action in a series of posts to X. “After sitting in a jail cell for 5-6 hours, my plane still didn’t take off for another 20 mins once I boarded. The flight was 50 mins. 50 mins.”

Minaj continued, “That’s why they had to do the big song & dance b/c they knew I’d still find a way to perform even if it came down to my last 90 mins in the building which would have been until 1130pm. The building was willing to go past 11pm. So grateful to them for that.”

Minaj concluded, “So they succeeded at their plan to not let me get on that stage tonight. I succeeded @ getting to the root of it all by recording them & posting everything in real time. I have sooooooooo much video evidence. You wouldn’t believe it if I told you. I’ll have the lawyers & GOD take it from here tho.”

Will Smith, Martin lawrence, Saudi Arabia, Bad Boys, movie premiere

Will Smith And Martin Lawrence Kick Off Saudi Arabia’s First Hollywood Premiere

The actors showcased "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" in Riyadh.

Two Hollywood stars who headlined sitcoms back in the 1990s, Will Smith (“Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”) and Martin Lawrence (“Martin”), made history when they both appeared in Saudi Arabia to host the country’s first Hollywood premiere at Roshn Front’s VOX Cinema in Riyadh on May 24.

According to Arab News, the two actors were there to promote their latest film in the “Bad Boys” series, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” which is slated to be released in the United States on June 5. It’s the fourth film in the franchise.

Smith spoke to the media outlet about the latest “Bad Boys” movie.

“Part of what we wanted to do with the franchise is to have the characters grow in an age-appropriate way,” Smith told the media outlet. “We are trusting that the audience wants to grow with us, wants to go with us, and wants to follow the natural progression of life and what these characters would be going through.”

This film, coming out four years after the third “Bad Boys” movie, “Bad Boys For Life,” and almost 30 years after the initial 1995, “Bad Boys” was directed by Bilall Fallah and Adil El-Arbi, Moroccans who grew up in Belgium.

“It’s interesting working with non-American directors; there’s such a different perspective… You know, they were (young) when the first movie came out, so there’s such a reverence for the original films. They’re bringing that energy, but they also want to put their signature on it. Energetically, it was fun to work with them, and also their openness to the spirituality of the film was also refreshing,” said Smith.

The movie franchise, which started with the first movie in 1995, has reportedly grossed more than $840 million at the box office over the past 29 years and stands to surpass a billion after this movie is released in June.

High School Student Sues Police For Racial Discrimination After Acquittal On Theft Charge

Amara Harris was fined for allegedly stealing a pair of AirPods.

In August 2023, Amara Harris won her case against the city of Naperville, Illinois, after being fined for allegedly stealing a pair of AirPods in 2019 while a student at Naperville High School. Now, Harris is suing the city, alleging that her civil rights were violated and that she was maliciously prosecuted by the city’s attorneys.

As ProPublica reported, Harris’s lawsuit, which was filed in federal court on May 21, details how the city took the case all the way to a jury trial in August 2023 despite a lack of evidence. In addition to suing the city, Harris is also suing former school police officer Juan Leon and his immediate supervisor at the time, Jonathan Pope. Leon admitted during the trial that he had no direct evidence that Harris stole the AirPods, which she has continually maintained were picked up by accident, as Harris believed they were a pair she owned.

As Harris told ProPublica, her fight is not only for herself but for students to be treated fairly during any investigation by the school. Harris’s lawsuit seeks $20 million in compensatory and punitive damages and seeks to force Naperville and its police department to implement training and oversight programs to avoid civil rights violations in the future. “They were wrong and they have to face consequences and be held accountable for what they did and for dragging this on,” Harris said.

A ProPublica investigation, “The Price Kids Pay,” uncovered that Harris is not the only student in Illinois subjected to a system of school ticketing masquerading as school discipline. In fact, the investigative report found that the state’s practice of levying fees and fines forced some parents into debt. Compounding matters, there is no option for a public defender to step in, meaning families that want to fight the system must commit to lengthy and expensive court battles as Harris did.

S. Todd Yeary, the former CEO of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and one of Harris’s lawyers, told ProPublica that unless the legislature is going to address the problem, the only real way to fight back is to use the court system. “If the legislators aren’t going to fix the law; if the system isn’t going to make sure there is accountability, the only recourse is to get the courts involved. This is about one young woman’s courage to say, ‘The reason I am not going to pay the ticket is because I did nothing wrong.’”

In ProPublica’s investigation, they found that Black students were almost five times as likely as white students to be ticketed by the school’s police.

Harris’ suit alludes to this investigation, as it alleges the ticket issued to Harris “constituted racial discrimination, a denial of constitutional rights, intimidation, and retaliation.”

Naperville City Attorney Mike DiSanto responded to Law & Crime via an emailed statement detailing the city’s intention to fight Harris’s lawsuit and attempted to distance the city from the actions of the police officers named in the suit. “The police officers involved in this matter relied upon independent eyewitness statements from school officials and students in issuing the theft citation to Ms. Harris,” the statement said.

The statement continued, “Further, prior to trial, the court denied Ms. Harris’ motion to suppress evidence, motion to dismiss, and motion for a directed verdict which further supports the evidentiary basis for issuing the citation. The fact that the jury acquitted Ms. Harris does not negate the factual basis for the actions of the city and its officers. The Naperville Police Department is an accredited law enforcement agency that provides significant training to its staff and maintains the highest standards of integrity, which the city maintains were met in this matter.”

Former Employee Accuses Maître D’ Of Sexual Harassment, Pickets Outside Exclusive Hollywood Club

Twenty-six-year-old Anazia Akhalu has been picketing outside the swank San Vicente Bungalows for about a week.

A young woman has been stationed outside a glitzy Hollywood venue holding a sign that alleges that she was sexually harassed at the hotspot.

Dressed elegantly, 26-year-old Anazia Akhalu, who is Black, has been picketing outside San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood, holding a sign that alleges she was sexually harassed at the clubhouse. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she has been seen carrying a sign that says, “I Have Been Sexually Harassed @ San Vincente Bungalows,” and has been picketing for about a week.

Akhalu previously worked at the venue for more than a month last winter. She claims that the maître d’, 74-year-old Dimitri Dimitrov, who has been on the Hollywood scene for many years, performed inappropriate acts upon her. She accuses Dimitrov of, among other things, “squeez[ing] on my waist and arm” and eyeing her “up and down.”

Although Dimitrov and the owner of the property, Jeff Klein, have declined to comment, a spokesman for San Vicente Bungalows released a statement. “SVB investigates all claims of harassment and discrimination, whether meritorious or not. SVB does not tolerate such conduct and promotes an environment free from harassment and discrimination.”

Dimitrov has been working for Klein for several years and had previously worked at another famed Klein venue, the Sunset Tower before he started working at San Vicente Bungalows in 2018.

Sources at the venue have said that the club has terminated staff and members in the past when accusations of harassment were substantiated, and they questioned why Akhalu chose to wait several months before coming forward to make her accusation against Dimitrov.

Akhalu has stated that she was previously afraid to file a complaint because “Jeff Klein is a huge mogul — I felt so helpless,” but she also recently filed a report with the police. “They haven’t done anything, either,” she says. “I feel silenced.”

Kenyan Government Signs Agreements With HBCUs

Kenyan President William Ruto came to the United States to solidify the partnerships.

Kenyan President William Ruto confirmed that the Kenyan government has signed agreements with a handful of HBCUs like Spelman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Howard University. The partnership will help boost economic development and the STEM education curriculum in Kenya and the United States.

The good news was announced just after Ruto visited the States to meet with President Joe Biden’s administration. Ruto stopped in Atlanta on May 20, where he later met with President Biden.

Ruto said while at Spelman College, “We shall empower a new generation of disruptive thinkers, ambitious visionaries, and innovative problem solvers, and thus divine a brighter knowledge-driven future where progress transcends borders, transforms lives, and delivers prosperity.”

Spelman hasn’t outlined the fine details of the partnership program yet but reported that the deal with Kenya will allow for new and exciting opportunities for students to travel abroad.

Spelman President, Dr. Helene Gayle, told news outlets, “We still have details to work out in terms of the partnership, but you know, what we hope is that our students have the opportunity to go and learn in Kenyan schools and Kenyan students will have the opportunity here. Our faculty will have opportunities to do research together and build out partnerships in this very important area of STEM and technology.”

Ruto explained that the agreement with the HBCUs is modeled after the programs run between 1959 and 1963 that allowed hundreds of Kenyan students to attend college in the United States. Barack Obama Sr., the late father of former President Barack Obama, participated in the program while it was running.

On social media, U.S. Ambassador Meg Whitman, the official Ambassador to Kenya, wrote, “Wrapped up our Atlanta stop of #StateVisitUSKE by celebrating growing partnerships in trade, education, and the creative economy. Today, we moved to Washington for more engagements. #USKEat60.”

Bethany Donaphin, WNBA

Bethany Donaphin Makes The Plays For WNBA Players

Donaphin has married the two things she is most familiar with--business and basketball--to become a playmaker for the women of the WNBA.

Bethany Donaphin, a former WNBA player who also worked for Deloitte and the National Basketball Association, has been navigating the worlds of corporate America and basketball since she retired from the league following the 2008 season.

Donaphin is currently the Head of League Operations for the WNBA and is responsible for overseeing all on-court basketball affairs, including rule changes, evaluating referees, and applying analytics and innovation to benefit the women’s professional league in the future.

As Andscape reports, Donaphin, who holds the distinction of being the first New York Liberty player from New York to play for the team, has married the two things she is most closely familiar with–business and basketball–to become a playmaker for the women of the WNBA.

https://twitter.com/StanfordWBB/status/1794170385635926108?t=vMxBF93M3-988Qn7dkvWDg&s=19
https://twitter.com/WNBA/status/1733960055836623038?t=tgkOVPxJ8zZVA0iS9SX2Qw&s=19

“As [the WNBA has] driven a business transformation, I’ve gotten to utilize both – having been a player, having been on NBA basketball outside, having been in business school, and having worked as a strategy consultant,” Donaphin told Andscape. “I like that various parts of my background get married into what I do day to day.”

When Kathy Englebert was named the league’s commissioner in 2019, Donaphin was assigned the responsibility of creating a pipeline for former WNBA players to become head coaches in the league. Donaphin quickly assessed that the best way to create a pipeline for the former players, who, according to Englebert, tend to be Black women or other women of color, was to mandate that teams have at least one former WNBA player on their coaching staff.

Englebert believed that mission would involve anywhere from 5-10 years of work before it bore fruit, but Donaphin accomplished it in a fraction of the time. By 2022, according to the TIDES Racial and Gender Report Card, 58.3% of head coaching positions and 64.7% of assistant coaching positions were held by women, and 50% of the league’s head coaches were women of color, while 61.7% of assistant coaches were women of color. All of those statistics represent a massive increase from 2019, when Donaphin started her mission.

Donaphin explained her motivations to Andscape, saying, “[It’s important] for me to be an advocate for things that players care about in the league office, particularly because our league is full of women of color and people I see myself in and people I hope see themselves in me.”

She added, “For all those reasons, it’s a true honor to be in this role.”

New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart, the reigning league MVP, encapsulated how the players feel about Donaphin’s role within the league.

“She listens,” Stewart told Andscape. “She lets us know what’s possible and what’s not. Obviously, she’s working on the W side, but, as a former player, understanding the things that we’re wanting and asking for, then being able to communicate that to both sides…She is the bridge between the players and the league.”

Although some have speculated that Donaphin would be a good commissioner for the league, she is content to play point guard for the league’s players.

As Donaphin told Andscape: “Where I am is exactly where I’m supposed to be. … If, at some point, an opportunity to do more presents itself, we’ll see, but I don’t really think about that. I think about what’s needed of me in the moment, where can I have impact that’s unique to me because of what I bring to the table and because of what my background is. I don’t try to be anybody else.”

New Study Links Ultra-Processed Foods To Increased Risk Of Stroke And Cognitive Decline

Ultra-processed foods include everything from candy and store-bought ice cream to cereal, fries, and canned soup, among popular snacks.

A new study suggests that the consumption of ultra-processed foods can not only increase a person’s chance of experiencing a stroke but is also said to be responsible for cognitive decline.

Foods like chips, soda, hot dogs, and more have been known to cause health conditions like diabetes, depression, and even death. The new study, which followed more than 30,000 participants over the age of 45 for an average of 11 years, adds to the previous research, noting that the increased risk of a stroke and cognitive impairment is higher when eating those aforementioned ultra-processed foods, Forbes reports.

While processed foods are foods changed from their natural states through the addition of ingredients like salt, sugar, or oil, ultra-processed foods are generally created from extracted substances, including fats, added sugars, and starches. Examples include candy and store-bought ice cream, cereal, fries, and canned soup, among popular snacks.

When it comes to the risk they pose to humans, processed foods, despite being altered, aren’t necessarily dangerous to human health. These include packaged bread, cheese, canned beans, tofu, and canned tuna. Foods like fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, nuts, whole grains, and eggs are considered unprocessed foods, which are whole foods that contain a minimal amount of added ingredients.

Researchers chose 14,175 participants to study for cognitive decline and another 20,243 to follow around stroke. People from both groups had no prior history of either medical condition. By the end of the research period, 768 people were diagnosed with cognitive impairment, and 1,108 had a stroke by the end of the study.

“Participants who ate 10% more ultra-processed foods had a 16% greater risk of developing cognitive impairment, while those who ate more unprocessed and whale foods had a 12% decline in risk,” said the study, which was published Wednesday (May 22) in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

People who conducted the study and identified as Black were the most at risk among those who ate high amounts of ultra-processed foods and had a 15% increased risk of stroke during the research period.

At this time, ultra-processed foods make up almost 58% of total calories consumed by Americans and are their main source of food. The subsistence also contributes to nearly 90% of the energy that Americans receive from added sugars.

Travis Scott In Brawl With Cher’s Boyfriend, Music Exec Alexander ‘AE’ Edwards, At Cannes Afterparty

Scott and Edwards are seen in videos throwing punches on stage near the DJ booth.

Hip-hop star Travis Scott got into a fight with Cher’s boyfriend, Alexander “AE” Edwards, during a party at the Cannes Film Festival, according to videos shared by media outlets including Entertainment Tonight, TMZ, and Page Six.

People reports that Scott, 33, Edwards, 38, and Cher, 78, all attended New York City nightclub owner Richie Akiva’s “The After” party on the night of May 23 at a private villa following the AmfAR Gala.

Edwards’ friend Tyga was also at the event, along with Future, Evan Ross, Odell Beckham Jr., Joe Jonas, and other high-profile guests.

During the night, guests got up to DJ, and the fight happened when Tyga, 34, and Scott were both on stage behind the DJ booth, Entertainment Tonight reported.

The video footage captured by PageSix shows Scott and Edwards throwing punches on stage near the DJ booth, accompanied by a heated exchange between the two. Tyga reportedly stayed behind the DJ booth during the altercation and did not get involved in the physical fight.

The exact details of what sparked the fistfight remain unclear. Witnesses have not reported who initiated the physical contact or the reason for the argument.

Both Scott and Tyga share a romantic history with reality TV personality and makeup mogul Kylie Jenner, 26. Scott and Jenner, who had an on-and-off relationship from 2017 until their final split in 2022, share two children: daughter Stormi, 6, and son, Aire, 2. Tyga dated “The Kardashians” star on and off for two years before officially ending their relationship in April 2017.

According to his latest job history, Edwards served as the vice president of A&R at Def Jam Records. He is also well-known for his previous relationship with model and reality star Amber Rose. The couple began dating in 2018 and welcomed their son, Slash Electric Alexander Edwards, in 2019. Their relationship ended in 2021. Edwards has been dating Cher since November 2022.

Despite the dramatic events, Scott and Edwards seemed to have avoided serious injury, and the situation was eventually diffused. Security and party organizers intervened to separate the two.

According to reports, Scott left the party shortly after the incident, while Edwards and Tyga remained until late in the night. Earlier in the evening, Cher performed at the AmfAR Gala, which raises money for research to end HIV and AIDS.
