OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network Rolls Out the OWN Your Health Initiative Along With Campaign Partners
The Cleveland Clinic reminded people that self-care is not selfish. Nevertheless, U.S. News & World Report reports how many health disparities for Blacks persist including in the lives of Black women. Hypertension, cancer, and diabetes are just some of them. In some ways, achieving better health is the desired result, but Black women are still being hit hard by personal and economic burdens that can lead to less self-care. With health disparities, struggles to balance work duties with personal needs, taking care of children alone as a primary caregiver, and enduring frequent stressors are just a few factors that can negatively impact some women in the Black community who need improved healthcare.
The Oprah Winfrey Network, named for and inspired by the iconic leader, is taking notice that Black women still need encouragement to tend to their health. Deadline reported that OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, launched its first-ever initiative focused on providing tools and resources to empower Black women to own their health in 2021 and beyond.
“The network’s OWN Your Health campaign seeks to bring awareness, education, resources, and a sense of community to address the unique health concerns facing Black women today, encouraging them to put their health and well-being first,” Deadline stated.
Deadline also revealed that the multiplatform campaign explores the full range of mental, physical, and emotional/social health with quarterly initiatives that feature messaging and with up-to-date and relevant health and wellness tools.
“The campaign also provides opportunities for OWN brand partners to support with resources and options for healthier lifestyles,” according to Deadline.
In an advertising spot released to launch OWN’s overall message, women were advised to take care of themselves first, before taking care of anyone or anything else. The clip closed with a reminder to be an example by owning their health.
“As we build a better future, as we break down barriers, as we claim our power, we must never forget our single greatest asset: our health,” a woman in the spot reminds.
