the proposal (49%) than support it (34%), with a small group still undecided (17%).
Kirk says African Americans can contribute to redistricting reform efforts by contacting their elected officials and the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division Voting Section if they believe their voice has been muted through the redistricting process. The NAACP may also file suit against a jurisdiction if it finds that voting rights have been compromised.
“Locally-elected officials are perhaps the most important people as far as elected officials are concerned because they help determine how money is spent in a jurisdiction,” says Kirk. “That’s why African Americans should care about this.”
