Sheila Abdus-Salaam Set to Become First Black Woman Appointed to New York’s Top Court
It’s definitely a high point in your career when you are recognized for the hard work and dedication that you exhibit for your work. Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam has been nominated to New York’s highest court. Recently, the judge was nominated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals. Judge Sheila was selected after the death of Judge Theodore James in Novemeber 2012. If selected she would be the first African American woman to serve.
Judge Abdus-Salaam has more than 20 years of experience in law. She graduated with her J.D. from Columbia University and began her career working at the Office of Labor Services as a general counsel. Gov. Cuomo said this about her in his release: “As one of our state’s most respected and experienced jurists, Justice Abdus-Salaam will bring a wealth of judicial and legal expertise to the New York State Court of Appeals,†Governor Cuomo said. “Rising from working class roots to serve for decades on the bench of the New York State Supreme Court, Justice Abdus-Salaam has a deep understanding of the everyday issues facing New Yorkers, as well as the complex legal issues that come before the state’s highest court. Justice Abdus-Salaam’s respect for the law and commitment to making New York a more just place to live will continue to benefit all New Yorkers, and I am pleased to send her nomination to the State Senate.â€
