Nest Recalling 440,000 Smoke Detectors

Your Nest Protect smoke alarm is getting recalled, thanks to a software bug, according to the Associated Press.

The bug lies in Nest’s unique “Wave” feature, whereby you wave your hand at the alarm to silence it if, for example, you’re cooking. The wave feature, according to Nest, can cause the alarm to potentially remain silent during a fire.

Nest has halted all sales of the Nest Protect: Smoke + CO Alarm until it can resolve the issue. The company is allowing current users a full refund.

If you want to keep your device, Nest will disable the Wave feature remotely, if it is connected to Wi-Fi.

The company’s disabling of the wave feature won’t be permanent. “Once we have a solution that ensures Nest Wave works as intended, we will update our software to turn this feature back on,” says Tony Fadell

, founder and CEO of Nest. “This will only happen after extensive testing and once we have received approval from safety agencies in the US, Canada and UK.”

Nest also produces the Nest Thermostat, a smart thermostat that connects to Wi-Fi and learns your habits to properly adjust temperatures automatically.

Fadell, one of the creators of Apple’s iPod, sold the company to Google for $3.2 billion in January 2014.
