Black College Athlete Graduation Rates Improve

The overall graduation rates of NCAA basketball players this year have improved, particularly among African-American athletes, according to an annual report by the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports (TIDES).

The overall graduation rates for programs

in the tournament increased from 67 percent in 2012 to 70 percent, but among athletes of color the graduation success rate increased from 59 percent to 65 percent. White players’ rates increased from 88 to 90 percent.

Data was collected by the NCAA from institutions for the study. TIDES reviewed the six-year graduation rates of each school’s freshman class, or Graduation Success Rates, and calculated a four-class average or academic progress rate.
