What does being one of the BEMM 100 Men of Distinction mean to you?
It’s an honor to be recognized by BEMM as one of the 100 Men of Distinction. It proves that the age old saying, “hard work pays off and doesn’t go unrecognized,” is a philosophy that remains true. This distinction will serve as a testament to my community, family, and peers in marginalized communities. Persistence, being a living example in your professional and personal life, and keeping God first shows us there is no limit to where your potential can lead you.
What are some examples of how you turned struggle into success?
Growing up in a disenfranchised city with one of the worst school systems in the country didn’t provide the best fundamental skills to make it, but through self-education (reading and watching countless hours of tutorials, speakers, and educators) I’ve become one of the most sought after consultants in my field. In the early 2000’s, I went from being a music consumer buying CD’s on my days off of work to networking with DJ’s and mom-and-pop record stores throughout the southeast, creating a successful music and video distribution company with my brother, Ameer. Making the transition early, I took everything I learned and applied it online, creating Success Media Group. With Success Media group, I did marketing for recording artists, producers, and DJ’s, including The Heatmakerz, Beat Billionaire, DJ Nando, DJ Holiday, and more. At this point, my work was recognized by Floyd Mayweather, which lead to doing business with him and Mayweather Promotions. During that time, Floyd called me to set up and promote a series of late night video streams on Ustream, due to a direct relationship I had with the company. Those streams gave birth to the phrase “the money team,” which has since grown into a globally respected brand.
What is an important quality you look for in your relationships with others?
Self-awareness is a very important quality that I look for in people. When choosing a team and working with others, everyone has to be self-aware, so that we can all focus on our strengths and maximize every moment we have to work together. If we are clear about our strengths and weaknesses, it saves everyone valuable time when dealing with each other in business and life.
What are some immediate projects you are working on?
Currently, I’m handling the day-to-day marketing and branding operations of Success Media Group and working with various clients, from artists, to small businesses, and athletes. I’m also in the process of developing some innovative apps that we are set to launch in the coming months.
What is the best advice you ever received?
The best advice I ever received was from a book that I read, which said, “Focus on the things that matter and always bet on your strengths.” Most people have ideas, but execution plays a pivotal part in success.
My grandmother told me to not let her years of hard work be in vain, and that alone has been the fuel to my fire. In addition to the advice mentioned, putting these teachings into actions at all the levels I perform both professionally and personally, leads to greater chances for success.
What is some advice you have for other men who want to make a difference?
My advice is to be willing to put in the work over a long period of time while perfecting your craft. The more knowledge you have enables you to make stronger decisions in all arenas of your life. Just remember, most advice is philosophical and all human philosophy has flaws.
How do you prep for an important business meeting and/or event?
An important factor before going to an important meeting is identifying several things that will be beneficial to both parties. I’ve always had great results in finding common ground at the beginning of meetings. Preparation always includes understanding the background of who I’m meeting with and finding out their interests to see if that’s something we could build upon.
As a busy Modern Man, how do you unwind on vacation? Share a story about your best vacation.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Vegas, and it’s an adult playground with many attractions. Unwinding for me involves keeping it simple and having a BBQ with a few friends. Those shared moments and conversations are priceless. I was in Miami one weekend unwinding, and a general conversation turned into a solid relationship with a client, who I still work with to this day. I like to call that a pay-cation!
If you could travel and stay anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
If I could travel anywhere in the world to stay and work, it would have to be Monaco. It has an amazing ocean view, among other cultural attractions. I’ve always wanted to travel there, and I figure I would still be able to handle a lot of my business, since the majority of it is conducted online.
