What does being one of the BEMM 100 Men of Distinction mean to you?
Being one of the BE Modern Man 100 Men of Distinction is truly an honor. As a young black entrepreneur, I’ve always held Black Enterprise with high regard. The consideration alone is humbling. At the same time, it’s reassurance that I’m being recognized for my work and efforts. Truly a great feeling.
What are some examples of how you turned struggle into success?
I began my journey in this business at the age of 24 with no experience, no connections, and minimal resources. Luckily for me, I had a team of people that believed in me and my talents. I turned my passion into profits by opening a small shop in my neighborhood which sold all of the clothing I designed. That gave the community a sense of pride and inspired many other young entrepreneurs to follow their dreams.
What is an important quality you look for in your relationships with others?
A very important quality I look for in relationships with others is how genuine they are. That is the core of a great relationship. If it’s not organic I really don’t want to be involved.
What are some immediate projects you are working on?
Currently I’m working on a special capsule collection of garments in collaboration with hip-hop artist Fabolous. Also working on an exclusive capsule for select Footaction stores.
What is the best advice you ever received?
The best advice I’ve ever received is to take no advice. That taught me to trust my gut. Trust myself. Listen to the voices within me.
What is some advice you have for other men who want to make a difference?
To the men who want to make a difference, I would say to focus on your purpose and make sure to see it through. Once your vision and execution match, it separates you from everyone else.
How do you prep for an important business meeting and/or event?
Being in the industry that I am in allows me to truly be myself in regards to my language and style of dress. So when I prepare for an important meeting, I make sure I have on some fresh clothes and kicks, smell good, and have my notes ready. I also have to listen to some vintage Jay-Z to get in the zone.
As a busy Modern Man, how do you unwind on vacation? Share a story about your best vacation.
As a modern man, the way I unwind during vacation is to totally relax. No laptop or emails, just some sun and a body of water allows me to disconnect from the hustle and connect with pure energy. My best vacation was my recent trip to Trinidad. Sun, family, friends, vibes, and maybe the best memories made.
If you could travel and stay anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
If I can spend 1/3 of the year in the Caribbean, 1/3 in Africa or Asia, and 1/3 home in the States I would be very happy. Different cultures and environments truly inspire me. A good mix of familiar and new places help me tap into new dimensions of creativity.
I would like to thank BE for this great opportunity to share my views and parts of me here on this platform.
