Name: Isaiah Thompson
Age: 27
Profession: Founder, CEO of Tap App
One Word That Describes You: Driven
What does being one of the BEMM 100 Men of Distinction mean to you?
To me, it means we’re moving in the right direction. I frequently refer to Black Enterprise for insight and answers. Being featured is definitely an honor, and I’m humbled by it.
What are some examples of how you turned struggle into success?
There are too many. When you are starting a business, challenges (not struggles) are a part of the process. So, I take solace in knowing that those challenges are necessary for progression.
What is an important quality you look for in your relationships with others?
Sincerity. As an entrepreneur, I’ve learned being forthright about your intentions pays dividends in the long run.
What are some immediate projects you are working on?
Right now, we are rebuilding the app and making a few changes to enhance the user experience (UX). We’re also hosting a huge summer event with food, drinks, and music; it should be pretty be dope.
What is the best advice you ever received?
If you’re going to do it, do it right. Growing up, I was taught that your work is your signature; that’s what is left behind after you’re gone. So, “half-done” wasn’t allowed.
What is some advice you have for other men who want to make a difference?
Not everyone is going to see the vision, and not everyone will join you on the journey. You must be willing to walk alone if necessary, and never give up.
How do you prep for an important business meeting and/or event?
After arming myself with the knowledge and necessary information, I listen to hip-hop with braggadocio. It gives me the confidence I need to pull the trigger.
As a busy Modern Man, how do you unwind on vacation? Share a story about your best vacation.
Last year, my wife and I spent some time in the mountains in northern Georgia. Usually, I’d prefer the beach, but when you have good company, it really doesn’t matter where you go.
If you could travel and stay anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would stay in Morocco. The food is delicious, and I’ve heard that the beaches are phenomenal.
Anything else you’d like to say?
Support a black-owned business and encourage your friends to do the same. Just a few extra dollars to black-owned businesses a month can do wonders for our community. With the Tap App, we are taking serious steps to close the wealth gap by circulating dollars in the black community.
It’s our normal to be extraordinary. Follow @blackenterprise and join the BE Modern Man conversation using #BEModernMan.
