Meet Caroline Clarke…

A force to be reckoned with, Bronx, NY born Caroline Clarke is an author, editor, and award-winning journalist. A writer at heart naming, “To thine own self be true,” as her favorite quote, courtesy of  William Shakespeare, Clarke has two books to her name, Take a Lesson: Today’s Black Achievers on How They Made It & What They Learned Along the Way and Postcards from Cookie, A Memoir of Motherhood, Miracles, and a Whole Lot of Mail (Harper Collins), a memoir exploring her life as an adopted child. She attributes a love of the written word to her mother, Vera Clarke.

“A brilliant and devoted NYC public schoolteacher and reading specialist, she made me an early reader which set me up for scholastic success and my love for writing,” Clarke says. “She’s the most honest, most generous, most brave and guileless person I know. She didn’t try to be superwoman; she strove to be the best she could at what mattered to her. She didn’t want ‘it all.’ she went after what she wanted and was satisfied when she got it.

A staple at Black Enterprise for more than 20 years, serving in a number of key BE roles including senior editor and editor-at-large, editorial director, Black Enterprise Books; general manager, interactive media; and host of the Black Enterprise Business Report. Clarke is also co-editorial director of the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit. Key in creating the annual event, Women of Power has grown to become the nation’s largest annual conference targeting African American women executives since its beginning in 2004. Providing advice to women who want success in life she shares, “Know what you want. Get really clear about it and keep envisioning and refining it so you can be targeted and efficient in your pursuit of it,” she says. “Be bold. Take risks. Be ready. But also dream, be flexible, and don’t take it all too seriously. Remember in all things — personal and professional — you can only control you so when things go awry (and they will) focus there.”
