Before Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards got underway, Marion “Suge” Knight was partying at a West Hollywood nightclub when he was riddled with bullets.
On Aug. 23, Knight was at 1OAK, a popular club in Los Angeles, when he was shot multiple times. Rumor has already begun that it was a planned attack against the hip-hop mogul, who was planning to release new information about his days as a key figure in the infamous rap feud that crossed East Coast and West Coast lines.
“Suge has been writing a pretty controversial film—lots of shocking details—about Tupac and exposing the truth,” a close friend to Knight told TMZ. “He also plans a reboot of his recordand there are still a lot of haters out there because of his past negative publicity.” The 49-year-old was in the car when rapper Tupac Shakur was shot and killed in Las Vegas in September, 1996.
The Death Row Records founder was struck by gunfire around 1:30 a.m. on Sunset Boulevard during a pre-VMA party hosted by Chris Brown. Knight’s family issued a statement to Revolt on Sunday, asking all to “Keep Suge in your prayers and to stay away from the negativity portrayed by the media … Suge is currently resting and has lost a lot of blood, he’s human,” the statement read. “He’s done a lot of things for the community and the culture as a whole so we ask that you respect that.”
Chris Brown immediately took
to Twitter to tell the masses that he was not affiliated with the violence that occurred. “It’s disappointing that we as a society can’t have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes,” he tweeted. Brown and co-host Pia Mia were not hit by gunfire, and according to the singer’s rep, Brown will “continue to cooperate with the investigation.” In addition to Knight, two other victims, a man and a woman, were also being treated for gunshot wounds. All three victims are expected to survive.
TMZ reported that cops believe that the key motive behind Knight’s shooting is pegged to a “gang rivalry.” The West Hollywood Police Department was not able to comment further as the investigation is ongoing, and a representative for Knight was not able to be immediately reached for comment.
