West, who famously came out as a Trump supporter in 2016, has shown fervor in his support for the president. “I’m a black guy with a red [MAGA] hat, can you imagine?” West said.

He told The Wall Street Journal that going public with his support of Trump, “reminded me of how I felt as a black guy before I was famous when I would walk in a restaurant and people would look at you like you were going to steal something. ‘This is your place, Ye, don’t talk about apparel. This is your place, Ye, you’re black, so you’re a Democrat.’”

The rapper says he abhors the stereotypes that come with his being black and a rapper: the expectation that he has to be a Democrat (although he is not even a registered voter). “Everything is about putting people in their place. Classism, protectionism—not just racism,” he said. “Classism is like living on a bookshelf. The more money you have, the higher you go. And you get to the top and look over and what do you see? Fear.”

West did confirm to The Wall Street Journal that he did not vote for Trump in the 2016 presidential election because he couldn’t vote at all because he isn’t a registered voter. He did acknowledge that if he was a registered voter at the time, Trump would have received his vote. He has vowed that he is locked in to make sure that Trump is re-elected for another four years.

West also spoke of his fashion sense and the success of his popular Yeezy footwear.
