Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Ex-Girlfriend to Show Artist’s Unseen Works

In 1979, while still an unknown artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat painted all over the apartment he and ex-girlfriend Alexis Adler shared, on walls, doors, refrigerators, any surface he could find, Blouin Art Info reports.

Although the couple broke up after a year, Adler, an NYU embryologist, now owns the apartment she and Basquiat shared and never painted over any of his work. She also stored his notebooks, postcards, painted clothes, photographs, and drawings.

Adler, along with a team of curators, is now sorting through the treasure trove of unseen Basquiats in preparation for a book on the new collection, as well as an exhibition and sale.
