Gun Stores See Increase in Business after Newtown Shooting

In the wake of the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut by Adam Lanza that left 20 children and six adults dead last week, many gun stores are seeing an increase in purchases.

Karl Durkheimer, the owner of Northwest Armory in Southeast Portland, said that in his 20 years of business, this week has been his busiest week in sales with Saturday being the single busiest day. He also said he’s seeing many first-time gun owners in his shop. His store is a family-owned business that dates back to the 1800’s – and since 1992 – he and his family have sold guns.

He said, “They are here because they want to be able to take care of themselves and their families. The tragedies of this past week have really scared people. Now the people asking about concealed carry has escalated greatly.”

This increase in weapons sales comes at a time when the gun industry was already showing record sales. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the industries economic impact rose from $6.8 billion in 2008 to $13.6 billion in 2011.
