The office for Georgia Governor Brian Kemp rejected President Trump’s call for Kemp to overrule his secretary of state and state election officials in certifying the vote.
Trump spent Sunday attacking the Peach State’s governor, a Republican, on Twitter wondering why Kemp won’t use his emergency powers to overrule Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and do a match of signature on mail-in and absentee ballots, something the outgoing president
believes will lead to a “goldmine” of fraud.Kemp’s office responded to the president Monday, telling The Hill “Georgia law prohibits the governor from interfering in elections.”
“The secretary of state, who is an elected constitutional officer, has oversight over elections that cannot be overridden by executive order,” Kemp’s communication’s director, Cody Hall, said.
Raffensperger has been pressured by Republicans in and out-of-state since Biden was projected to win the state. First, Republican Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue called on Raffensperger to resign after they came in second in their senate races.
A week later, Raffensperger told various media outlets that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called him and suggested he throw out legal ballots in order to change the results, a claim Graham denied.
Raffensperger and Kemp have both certified the election in the state, which had President-elect Joe Biden winning by more than 12,000 votes. Trump has grown increasingly upset as his election lawsuits in the state have not worked and has refused to concede the election.
The outgoing president told “Fox News Sunday” he was “ashamed” he endorsed Kemp and that “he’s done absolutely nothing.”
The former director of the U.S. Cyber Agency Chris Krebs appeared on “60 Minutes” to respond to Trump’s claims and to defend his own claim that the election is the “most secure in American history.”
“I know the work that the intelligence community has done, the Department of Defense has done, that the FBI has done, that my team has done. I know that these systems are more secure,” Krebs said. “I know based on what we have seen that any attacks on the election were not successful.”
