The Office of Admissions at Fisk seeks to identify students who are eager to be challenged, understand that service is a responsibility, and those who decide that personal growth is one of their goals for the undergraduate experience. Our students typically are the students in their high school classes who are asking all the questions and asking how they can be involved in something. What advice do you have for students who might fall short of minimum requirements, but still want to attend? For students who may find themselves short of our minimum requirements but have identified Fisk as one of the best possible matches for their undergraduate education, my recommendations would be: Show initiative and schedule a campus interview; this gives us a chance to know you "off the page.†Attend our Pre-College Summer Program; this is designed to provide additional support and give students a "head start†on the expectations at Fisk; And in the application process, have a clear understanding of what makes you different (and thus a good fit for Fisk) and illustrate that through your application package. What kind of opportunities do you have for international students? I think that Fisk provides a unique opportunity for international students, as our international students comprise almost 10% of our student body. Just like our domestic students, international students can find a community among our campus AND be integrated into the larger institutional culture. How does the university weigh GPA, SAT scores, extracurricular activities and college essay and recommendations during the application process? An applicant's curriculum choices and GPA, extracurricular activities, test scores, and essay rank in that order in our evaluation and review process. This may be different from other institutions, but recommendations are less of an important factor because they tend to be subjective and not necessarily reflect the data provided on the transcript or other areas of the application. What is the student-teacher ratio? 12:1 What is the university's housing situation like? Fisk University currently has four residence halls which are home to about 65% of our student body. Is it difficult for freshman/sophomores to get housing? No, it is not difficult except in the case of the freshmen ladies. Their primary residence hall tends to fill, so late-comers are placed in another hall right next door.
