Friends and family of the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti celebrated his life during a week-long series of events in Nigeria.
In addition to the opening of the Kalakuta Museum, which is dedicated to Fela’s life, there were performances by a number of contemporary Nigerian artists. The hip swaying rhythms and politicized lyrics were all in homage to Fela.Fela died in 1997 from AIDS complications, but his music and legacy have been back in the forefront recently due to a hit Broadway musical about his life.
