Hampton President Awarded Thurgood Marshall College Fund Leadership Award

Hampton University President William R. Harvey, Ph.D. was recognized earlier this month for his commitment to education and leadership by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF).

As a recipient of the 2014 Educational Leadership Award by TMCF, Mr. Harvey received the highest volunteer award presented to an individual who has demonstrated a tremendous level of dedication to HBCUs and education.

“The award is usually presented to an educational leader from a publicly-supported HBCU, but Dr. Harvey’s success as President of Hampton University and his 30-year tenure as one of the longest tenures of any sitting president of a college or university in the country is oustanding,” said TMCF President and CEO Johnny C. Taylor. “Dr. Harvey salutes the legacy of Justice Thurgood Marshall though his commitment and dedication to education and service.”

Mr. Harvey has served as president of Hampton since 1978, and has since increased student enrollment, increased the endowment, raised the average SAT scores for incoming freshman, and implemented several new and innovative programs. He has served on a number of corporate boards including Fannie Mae, Newport News Shipbuilding, Signet Bank and Trigon Blue Cross/Blue Shield. A graduate of Talladega College and Harvard University, Harvey also serves as chair of the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
