Dr. Bernice King, daughter of civil rights icons Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, checked actor Jonathan Majors for repeatedly invoking her late mother’s name.
This occurred after Majors’ exclusive interview with Good Morning America Jan. 8, when he compared his girlfriend, actress Meagan Good, to Coretta Scott King, Complex reported.
In response, King posted an old photo of her mother on X in addition to a message.
“My mother wasn’t a prop,” she wrote. “She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War. Please understand…my mama was a force.”
King also linked to a 2017 essay she wrote for Huffington Post detailing Coretta Scott King’s powerful activism, musical talents, writing, and role as a mother.
The youngest daughter of the King couple wrote in the
essay, “Before she was a King, my mother was a civil rights activist, a member of the NAACP and the Race Relations and Civil Liberties Committees at Antioch College. Coretta Scott was determined that her life would serve to lift others. She was already a woman of great character.”Complex noted this was the second time Majors referenced Coretta Scott King while addressing his misconduct allegations. In a recorded argument with
his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, Majors demanded she act more like her and Michelle Obama. Majors, who is awaiting sentencing, was found guilty of assault and harassment.During his Good Morning America interview, Majors invoked Coretta Scott King’s name to explain why he wanted Jabbari to emulate her. He also compared his new girlfriend, Good, to the central figure in the civil rights movement.
“She’s an angel,” Majors gushed about Good, Complex noted. “She’s held me down like a Coretta. I’m so blessed to have her. The relationship is still fresh. I think I found her.”
