  • Denzel Washington Donates $2.25 Million to Fordham

Oscar —winning actor Denzel Washington has donated $2.25 million to Fordham University, with $250,000 going towards establishing a scholarship for minority undergraduate students studying theater at the institution. The remaining $2 million will be used to endow the Denzel Washington

Chair in Theatre, the university said on Monday.

Tony-Award winning actress Phylicia Rashad, best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on the popular 80’s sitcom The Cosby Show, has joined the Fordham faculty as the university’s first Denzel Washington Chair in Theatre.

  • Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth Dies at 89

Civil Rights leader Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth died Wednesday at the age of 89.

President Barack Obama issued a statement recognizing Shuttleworth, saying he “dedicated his life to advancing the cause of justice for all Americans. He was a testament to the strength of the human spirit. And today we stand on his shoulders, and the shoulders of all those who marched and sat and lifted their voices to help perfect our union. …

The iconic figure helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, with Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights leaders.

  • Unions Walk in Support of Wall Street Protesters

Labor unions joined thousands of protesters in lower Manhattan Wednesday to contest economic inequality, unemployment, and other central concerns for the Wall Street occupiers. Students at several colleges and universities across the country left their classrooms to show support for the movement.
