According to a report by The Sentencing Project, based on data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there has been a decrease in African American women being incarcerated from 2000 to 2009.
The data showed that in 2000 African American women were being incarcerated at six times the rate of white women. The data now shows that there has been a shift in recent years with a decline of about 53%.
According to the Executive Director of The Sentencing Project, Marc Mauer,  this decline shows that “problems that many people viewed as seemingly intractable, it appears that we can make progress as a society on those issues,”
