Dashon Goldson: Running the Route with Entrepreneurship
The cigar culture is really fascinating to me. I love the lounge environment, where customers can come to unwind, talk for hours, escape from their everyday stresses. I often compare the lounge to a barbershop, some of the best conversations I’ve ever had went down in that lounge. Conversations with people of all ages from all walks of life. When I opened my business, I wanted to create that for others. I think I’ve succeeded.
Could you explain what motivates you to give back and could you also tell us about your organization, The Highest Point Foundation, what it does and why did you feel compelled to start it?
It’s an interesting position to be in, being a professional athlete. It’s really quite humbling when you take a step back and think of all the people who were there along the way and the incredible opportunities that are afforded to us despite all of the struggles I’ve been through. I think that’s what compels me to give back through The Highest Point Foundation. Just knowing how blessed I am and that I have the ability to give guidance or help young kids who may not make it through their struggles without my help. That’s truly a fantastic feeling, to feel like I can make a difference.
Who and/or what is responsible for your work ethic and what keeps you maintaining that drive?
My parents first and foremost. I’ve had some incredible coaches who have taught me skills on the field but more importantly, life skills. My friends drive me on the field, some who have made it in the league and can serve as mentors and even those who didn’t make it. I push myself every day for the friends I grew up with who are back home cheering for me.
What would you say to someone who comes to you for advice on how to start and run a successful business?
Make sure to surround yourself with knowledgeable, reputable, trustworthy business people. Stay hands on and always keep an eye on your money and your business.
