On November 18, 2015, Nairobi-born New Yorker Agunda Okeyo's Sisters of Comedy show heads to Broadway. The only all-black women's comedy show hits the stage at famed Caroline's on Broadway, New York's top stand-up comedy club. The show will feature some high-profile guests, including Erin Jackson of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Hadiya Robinson from The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Michelle Buteau of Comedy Central's The Half Hour, Ndidi Oriji, and Michaela Angela Davis, editorial manager at BET Networks. Past guests have included feminist icon Gloria Steinem, who recently released a new book called My Life On The Road. [Related: Celebrity Chef Marcus Samuelsson Shares Recipes for Financial and Entrepreneurial Success] Okeyo, a writer, producer, filmmaker, and activist also produces Comedy n' Waffles on Tuesday nights at Ginny's Supper Club at celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster restaurant in Harlem. Being a black woman in the comedy world is no easy task. Being a black business woman not only ups the ante, but has pushed Okeyo to do some deep soul searching, so that her message, her medium, and her money could support her mission. BlackEnterprise.com caught up with Okeyo on the eve of the Sisters of Comedy's Broadway debut. BlackEnterprise.com: How did Sisters of Comedy come about? Okeyo: Sisters of Comedy is my flagship comedy show–the only all-black women comedy show at any of the top comedy clubs in NYC. We spent the past year and a half at Gotham Comedy Club and are now headed to Caroline's on Broadway. In both venues, I believe I am quite literally one of a kind in terms of who I am and what I do. After years in the non-profit sector, trying to do "good" like so many young professionals with expensive and expendable liberal arts education, I decided to do and live for what makes me happy. Building a career in comedy and entertainment comes with a lot of financial insecurity due to unsteady and unstable pay. How did you support yourself? Throughout my adult life I usually maintained more than one job, even if one job was full-time. In a way, in addition to paying the bills, I must have been searching. At one point I started a part-time job at a comedy club and maintained that position on and off for several years. But once I decided to do only what makes me happy and live according to what makes me happy, I realized laughing, telling jokes, and hearing jokes makes me happy. However, the do-gooder in me wanted more than a career as a stand-up comedian. I decided to write and produce first, and pursue a performing career only after carving out a space that I, as a black African woman, could comfortably perform in on my own terms. Furthermore, I wanted to create a space where black women both on stage and off could feel an emotional release; a supremely positive environment where I could provide people with a joyous memory for their day, week, or year. In the bigger picture, Sisters of Comedy is about women (and men) of all stripes feeling comfortable in their own skin, and, above all, laughing their cares away. After nearly two years of building up Sisters of Comedy, I can finally explore my creative identity as performer, in addition to writer/producer. What's the business structure for your ventures? Sisters of Comedy is the mainstay of a number shows that I produce to both entertain and expand minds. As my flagship showcase, Sisters is a platform that I have many goals for, one of which is to tour it across the country. I'm the sole proprietor of all comedic creations like my three-month run of Comedy n' Waffles (a diverse, top-notch showcase for Harlem audiences featured in The New York Times and Time Out New York) at Ginny's Supper Club that ran from August through October, 2015. I have plans for another such limited-run showcase in Harlem this spring/summer. I also collaborate with wonderful non-profit organizations that I feel are truly doing their part to better the world. For instance, I'm working with both Equality Now and The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Coalition on comedy shows to promote gender equality, albeit with a hearty laugh. (Continued on next page) In addition to the challenges of being black women in comedy, did you run into challenges on the business side that you think are unique to the fact that you are black women? I often registered doubt from people about whether a show with five or six black women comedians really could be diverse. To many people's mind in America, diversity only speaks to racial difference. So one of the best things about Sisters of Comedy is that as an all-black women showcase, I can celebrate the diversity within the black community. And in doing so I put people face to face with their biases. Many people, even some black people, do not bank on the popularity of such a show because they rarely afford women, let alone black women, the credit we deserve as interesting, smart, surprising, and complex people. In addition to Sisters of Comedy, you write for publications including The Daily Beast, and you are writing a book. What do you feel are the most important things you can share about balancing your time? It's really, really hard to balance your time! For me, conquering the fear associated with all that I have to do on a given day or week or month is the greatest time saver–getting past the urge to retreat rather than push forward. But more practically, one has to learn to compartmentalize your day. Writing is best in the morning or late at night, while the meat of the day goes to producing. So far, that formula works for me. How did you sustain yourself financially as you built your career? I worked multiple jobs (usually two or three at a time) and interned whenever I could to build my skills and career prospects (I've had six or seven internships since I was 18 years old); sometimes I crashed on a couch to save money but maintain my creative ambition. The main thing I did was to never stop working; every day I'd figure out how to get up and on with life, so I could be where I am today: creative, independent, and laughing. What advice would you give about creating financial security while pursuing your passions? You don't have to love money, but you must respect money. Many people, in my opinion, make the mistake of either dismissing financial planning altogether, hoarding their money, or obsessing over the yacht they'll one day own without any assets to speak of. None of those perspectives require presence of mind. In order to pursue your passions, one must both do and dream; live in the present and plan/allow for the possibilities of your future. So I would say, learn how to invest in your day-to-day and also learn how to save so you can support the dreams you haven't had yet.
