Colin Kaepernick Gets his Chance to Work Out for NFL Teams

It looks like Colin Kaepernick will finally get a chance to work out for NFL teams. A private workout will be held for the free-agent quarterback on Saturday in Atlanta, according to a copy of a memo obtained by ESPN. The former NFL player-turned-activist also announced the news on Twitter.

Kaepernick’s workout will include on-field work and an interview. Video of the workout and interview will be made available to all 32 teams, as well. This news comes about a month after Kaepernick’s team addressed the

“false narratives” surrounding the former quarterback and lack of interest from teams in the NFL.

As reported on NFL.com, “Several teams have inquired to Kaepernick’s readiness to play football, and Kaepernick and his representatives have expressed his desire to return to the NFL. The league has discussed possible steps with Kaepernick’s camp, which emphasized that he is ready to work out for and be interviewed by NFL teams.”

In addition, Ian Rapoport, a national insider for NFL Network and NFL and host of RapSheet and Friends podcast, reported that “several clubs inquired as to Kaepernick’s football readiness and both him and his reps have frequently expressed his desire for him to return to the league. The NFL has arranged this opportunity for him to work out, and for all clubs to have the opportunity to evaluate him.”

Kaepernick, who played in Super Bowl XLVII for the San Francisco 49ers in 2013, lost his job in 2016 after taking a knee during the national anthem to protest racial injustice in America. The act sparked the controversial #TakeAKnee movement. Although the NFL said that it is not colluding on keeping Kaepernick from getting signed,

he sued the league and eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed amount last year. He remains a free agent.

Kaepernick also filed a grievance through the NFLPA against the league on Oct. 16, 2017. The grievance between Kaepernick and Eric Reid against the NFL was resolved in February. Specific terms, including finances, of the settlement, were not released given the confines of the agreement.
