Chris Rock And Other Comedians Decline Offers To Host The Golden Globes
Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday. But organizers are reportedly having issues with finding a host for the 2024 award show.
Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday. However, organizers are reportedly having issues with finding a host for the 2024 award show.
Chris Rock and at least four other A-list comedians have all turned down offers to host the award ceremony taking place Jan. 7, CNN reports. Rock has hosted the Golden Globes two times already. But he hasn’t attended a major award show since being slapped by Will Smith at the 2022 Academy Awards.
Rock could still attend the award show as his Netflix special, Selective Outrage, earned a nomination for Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television. But he’s not the only nominee who was asked to host the show and declined.
Actress/comedian Ali Wong also reportedly turned down offers to host the show despite the multiple nominations her Netflix miniseries Beef received. The “Smartless” podcast trio Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman also turned down an offer to host the show together, which would’ve been the first time three people co-hosted the show since Louis Gossett Jr., Leslie Nielsen, and Jane Seymour co-helmed the show in 1993.
Rock choosing to turn down the gig could be due to the infamous Oscars slap that’s still being talked about. Most recently, Jada Pinkett Smith credited the slap for saving her marriage to Will Smith.
“I nearly didn’t even attend the Oscars that year, but I’m glad I did,” Jada confessed to You Magazine. “I call it the ‘holy slap’ now because so many positive things came after it.”
Smith slapped Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards after the comedian joked about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Considering her alopecia diagnosis, Smith took offense to the joke and walked on stage and slapped Rock before returning to his seat and shouting for Rock to “keep my wife’s name out your fu*king mouth!”
The Smith’s marital woes have played out in the press recently. However, according to Jada, the slap was a positive turning point for the couple, whom she revealed had been separated since 2016.
“That moment of the s**t hitting the fan is when you see where you really are,” she shared. “After all those years trying to figure out if I would leave Will’s side, it took that slap for me to see I will never leave him. Who knows where our relationship would be if that hadn’t happened?”
While the slap brought Will and Jada closer together, it has since led to Chris Rock skipping out on attending award shows.
