According to reports, Camille Cosby will not be deposed Wednesday in a case of defamation by seven accusers against Bill Cosby.
United States Magistrate Judge David H. Hennessy allowed her legal team’s emergency motion for a stay. After his decision, Camille Cosby can now appeal the Dec. 31 order requiring her to be deposed by attorneys of the seven accusers due to “irreparable injury” as described by her lawyers. They filed an emergency motion Monday in federal court to delay her deposition in a case of sexual misconduct involving the icon entertainer.
She was set for deposition on Wednesday in Springfield, Massachusetts.
A federal magistrate in Massachusetts had previously denied a motion by Camille Cosby to reject the deposition order. In a ruling last week, U.S. Magistrate Judge David H. Hennessy reportedly wrote that he found “no merit” in Camille Cosby’s claim that “Massachusetts’ marital disqualification law renders her incompetent to testify in this matter” and accordingly denied her motion in its entirety.
Camille Cosby was served a December 9 subpoena to testify for the accuser’s lawyers at a deposition scheduled for January 6. Her lawyers challenged the deposition, citing that information from the couple’s private conversations was privileged.
Despite allegations against her husband, where more than 45 women have come forward accusing the entertainer of sexual assault and extramarital affairs, a source reportedly close to Camille has said she will stand by her spouse.Â
“They remain steadfast and resolute about working through this together and they have every intention of reclaiming their dignity and their name,” the source told People.
On Dec. 30, Bill Cosby was charged with aggravated indecent assault in the case of Andrea Constand, who alleges that, in January 2004, he drugged and sexually assaulted her. It’s the first time he’s faced criminal charges in any of the alleged cases.
Monique Pressley, Cosby’s lead attorney, has said that the charge is “unjustified” and that their team will mount a vigorous defense. The entertainer has also denied drugging and/or sexually assaulting the more than 50 other accusers.
