Brooklyn Nets Fire Head Coach Jacque Vaughn

With a lackluster record of 21-33, the Brooklyn Nets have decided to terminate their head coach, Jacque Vaughn

The Brooklyn Nets are making moves to jumpstart the lackluster season they are currently having. With a record of  21-33 at the midpoint of the NBA season, the team has terminated head coach Jacque Vaughn.

The team made the announcement on Monday, Feb. 19. An interim coach has not been named yet.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision, but one we feel is in the best interest of the team going forward,” Nets GM, Sean Marks, said in a written statement. “Jacque has represented this organization with exemplary character and class for the past eight years. The consistent positivity and passion he poured into our team daily will remain with the players and staff he interacted with throughout his tenure.”

In November 2022, the organization decided to part ways with then-head coach Steve Nash. Subsequently, Vaughn was promoted to the head coach position. He was given the title after serving as the interim coach at that time. Vaughn signed a multiyear contract last summer but with the disappointing record of the Brooklyn team, management has decided to move forward with a new coach.

He was just under .500 as the coach of the team with a 64-65 record. Although he led the Nets to the playoffs last season, they were eliminated in four straight games by the Boston Celtics.

The Nets are currently in 11th place in the Eastern Conference while being 2 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Hawks. With 10 teams making the playoffs, the no. 7 through no. 10 will make it to the Play-In Tournament. The Nets still have an outside chance to advance to the Play-In Tournament.

Before taking the reins of the Nets, Vaughn did a stint as the Orlando Magic head coach from 2012-15 (58-158) and also previously served as the Nets’ head coach in 2019-20 (7-3).
