Iowa Contender: Ben Carson Giving Donald Trump a Run for His Money, Ties in Poll
According to reports, Republican presidential nominee hopeful Ben Carson is giving popular peer Donald Trump a run for his money. New Monmouth University poll findings show Carson has tied with Trump in terms of favor in Iowa.
Poll results were released Monday showing Trump and Carson tied at 23%, the first time since July 26 that a poll in the first four states to select a Republican nominee did not find Trump substantially ahead of all other candidates.
Trailing behind Trump for the Republican presidential nomination is former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina (10%); Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (9%); Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (7%) former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (5%); Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (4%); Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (3%); and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (2%).
Nods to Carson being a strong contender to Trump were evident via an August Fox News poll–the first major outlet national poll since the first Republican debate–which showed him seeing a 71% increase in rating among Republican candidates. He’d also made his rounds to garner support from African American voters who, despite having more knowledge of him among Republican candidates, are currently favoring Democrat Hillary Clinton. Also, though Clinton is favored by black voters, she’s losing her stride in Iowa. A Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register survey, conducted from August 23-26, shows her favor among Democrats there declining sharply. Previously she led Bernie Sanders 57% to 16%, but now stands at 37% to 30%.
