U.S. Marshals were forced to take Brittish Williams into custody after the Basketball Wives star failed to surrender herself to authorities.
The St. Louis native was arrested Tuesday, February 20, after neglecting to turn herself in to federal prison to begin serving her four-year sentence, Fox 2 Now reports. This comes nearly one year after Williams pleaded guilty to five charges of Social Security number misuse, four counts of bank fraud, three counts of providing false statements to the IRS, and three counts of wire fraud.
She was given an extension to turn herself in following her lawyer’s request for a date after the Christmas holiday. The court moved her surrender date to January 3, 2024. However, when Williams failed to report to Federal Prison Camp, Alderson in West Virginia, on the appointed date, U.S. Marshals came to arrest her in St. Louis.
The Marriage Boot Camp alumna was indicted in September 2021. Along with her four-year prison sentence, Williams was ordered to five years of supervised release and a mandatory $564,069 in restitution.
Her lawyer, Michael Thompson, told the judge that the only reason she failed to turn herself in was due to a “miscommunication.” It was not her intent to miss the surrender date.
“I would apologize to the court on Ms. Williams’ behalf,” Thompson said.
The judge responded by revoking Williams’ bond and ordering her to be placed in the custody of the U.S. Marshals where she is slated for extradition to the women’s minimum-security facility in Alderson.
Williams pleaded guilty in 2022 to 15 federal charges, including tax fraud, bank fraud, insurance fraud, and pandemic-related fraud. The reality TV star is accused of sending out fabricated bills for health insurance payouts, providing false information to the IRS and on federal loan applications, and illicitly opening bank accounts and lines of credit using other people’s Social Security numbers. Authorities have accused Williams of fraudulently obtaining approximately $564,000.
She made her Basketball Wives debut in Season 3 while engaged to Lorenzo Gordon, who played professional basketball overseas. She returned in Season 10 and shared her legal troubles on screen.
Gordon has also since been charged with fraud for falsifying applications for pandemic relief loans. Williams and Gordon share a daughter, who was born in 2018.
