For some, summer time screams play time; for others, this time of year presents the perfect opportunity to earn a little extra cash with a summer job.
The scurry for summer jobs is real. Malls are packed with teens and college students looking to secure easy and brief employment, restaurants flood with eager cool kids looking to gain work experience with other cool kids looking to do the same, and parks are bombarded with prospective counselors excited to merge their work with play.
There is, however, much more to the summer job hunt.
According to a new CareerCast report on summer hiring opportunities, certain fields are summer hiring staples. Increased travel historically fuels a jump in hospitality jobs, as well as industries tied to travel like food and beverage.
Entry-level hotel jobs, like clerks, offer opportunities for part-time summer gigs. As for hospitality’s satellite industries, more travelers enjoying long nights means demand for bartenders. Bartending is an ideal summer job for someone seeking extra income, thanks to the job’s typical off-hours scheduling.
Organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA and local entities such as camps staff up to meet the growing demand at summertime when parents are working throughout the day and need childcare for their children who are typically in school during work hours year around.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary (JOLTS) also considers jobs in wholesale and goods manufacturing to be some of this year’s big summertime winners.
In the June JOLTS, there were 65,000 new wholesale trade jobs, 58,000 new positions in transportation, warehousing and utilities, and 46,000 new vacancies in durable goods manufacturing—-all three sectors tie directly into commerce.
The growing number of vacancies in commerce jobs translates to opportunities in delivery, workhouse positions, and retail.
