This weekend BLACK ENTERPRISE magazine was the proud winner of a GLAAD Media Award for the article “Black and Gay in Corporate America,” written by Black Enterprise editor-at-large Carolyn Brown in the July 2011 issue. The GLAAD Media Awards honor outstanding media images of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community that inspire change, and serve as a benchmark for the media industry and complement GLAAD’s work to bring LGBT images and stories to Americans.
In the article, Brown interviews individuals like cover subject Sabin D. Blake of General Motors, who spoke openly about the challenges of being a “double minority” as you climb the corporate ladder. For those who choose to “pass as straight,†they expend a great deal of time and energy covering up their personal lives or avoiding certain colleagues and company events.
