In the News: Former Atlanta City Councilwoman Found Guilty on Theft Charges
Nearly eight years after representing East Atlanta as a city council member, 55-year-old Devetta Johnson Mitchell was found guilty on seven counts of theft for stealing more than $30,000 from the Atlanta-Fulton County Recreation Authority. Mitchell was sentenced to five years probation and required to pay $20,000 in restitution, $10,000 of which she’s already paid, last Friday.
The district attorney’s office investigated the former councilwoman after the agency’s Board of Directors grew suspicious. They discovered Mitchell, who worked for the authority from April 1997 to July 2003, was signing checks over to herself. Checks ranged from $800 to $23,735, stated Assistant District Attorney Shondeana Morris to Superior Court Judge Craig Schwall.
