Americans might be walking a little lighter this tax season. The usual dash to meet the April 15 deadline will be less stressful this go-around with the Internal Revenue Service announcing taxpayers have until April 18, 2011 to file their 2010 tax returns.
Why the kind gesture, you might ask? Since the tax deadline falls on the day the legal holiday–Emancipation Day–is observed, by law, payment and filing deadlines are extended until the next business day, according to irs.gov. In addition, the deadline to file 2010 extensions will be extended two days, until Oct. 17, 2011.
The last time the IRS extended the April 15 deadline because of Emancipation Day was April 2007.
